An inkjet recording element is disclosed having a support and, on the support, (a) a porous base layer comprising particles of fumed silica and a hydrophilic binder and (b) an optional porous gloss layer above the base layer comprising particles of colloidal silica and a hydrophilic binder, wherein the particles of finned and colloidal silica are anionic. Also disclosed is a method of printing on such an inkjet recording element and a preferred method of making the inkjet recording element. The inkjet recording element can potentially have, in some embodiments, the advantages of improved image quality (reduced coalescence), and higher dye ink optical densities.

Inkjet recording element

An inkjet recording element is disclosed having a support and, on the support, (a) a porous base layer comprising particles of fumed silica and a hydrophilic binder and (b) a porous gloss layer above the base layer comprising particles of colloidal silica and a hydrophilic binder, wherein the particles of fumed and colloidal silica are anionic. Such recording elements exhibit improved humidity keeping and smudge resistance, while maintaining good differential gloss.

An ink jet printing method having the steps of: A) providing an ink jet printer that is responsive to digital data signals; B) loading the printer with an ink jet recording element having a support having thereon, in order, a hydrophilic absorbing layer and a polymeric overcoat layer of a derivitized poly(vinyl alcohol) having at least one hydroxyl group replaced by ether or ester groups, the polymeric overcoat layer also containing a sulfurous acid salt and an ammonium salt; C) loading the printer with an ink jet ink; and D) printing on the image-receiving layer using the ink jet ink in response to the digital data signals.

Ink jet printing method

The present invention comprises an ink recording element comprising at least one solvent absorbing layer comprising an amine inactivated absorbing gelatin. In a preferred embodiment, the element includes a hydrophilic overcoat layer comprising cellulose ether. The recording element may further comprise at least one hydrophilic inner layer comprising poly(vinyl alcohol) and located between the hydrophilic absorbing layer and the hydrophilic overcoat layer.
