In a bottom operable tank car lading valve assembly, a combination skid and lading valve seat for the lading valve closure is provided, which is attached to the tank car universal flange with mechanical fasteners. An adapter for use with a bottom operable tank car valve assembly includes an upper attachment portion for quickly attaching the adapter to a bottom operable tank car valve guard assembly. The adapter includes a body portion having one or more spouts extending radially outwardly from the body portion to receive loading and unloading conduits. An adapter operator is provided having a lower tool connection portion and a vertical extension extending upwardly within the adapter for attachment to a valve closure operator located within the valve guard assembly for opening and closing the tank car valve. The adapter includes a pair of spouts extending in different radial directions and different vertical inclinations to facilitate attachment of an unloading conduit to the adapter in an emergency situation.

In accordance with the present application, a bottom operable tank car valve seat and skid are made in separate pieces. The skid is welded to a skid mounting flange which is located below a tank car universal mounting flange. The skid mounting flange is attached to the universal mounting flange with fasteners. A ring is inserted into a slot provided in the upper, inner surface of the universal flange. Fasteners inserted into existing threaded openings in the universal flange hold the ring in place. A valve seat is mounted on the inner surface of the universal flange and the ring. The ring is held in place with fasteners which extend through the universal flange into the ring. These fasteners also hold in place an operator retainer to maintain the lading valve operator spaced from the walls of the valve seat and vertically fixed. With this arrangement the skid can be removed separately from the outlet. The retainer and the valve operator can be removed separately from the skid, and separately from the lading valve and valve seat with lading in the tank. Furthermore, when the car is empty, the entire assembly other than the universal flange can be disassembled from the bottom without the operator going inside the tank.

In accordance with the present invention, the bottom operable tank car valve assembly described in U.S. Pat. No. 3,981,481 is simplified and improved and a supplemental sealing arrangement is provided. In the improved design, the valve body includes a flange portion which is attached to a standard tank car universal flange and an inwardly extending circumferential portion upon which a valve closure seats in closed position. The valve closure includes a keeper which maintains a circumferential elastomeric seal in place engaging the closure. Clearance is provided between the closure operator, and the valve closure so that if the circumferential seal softens, melts or burns, the closure can move vertically downwardly relative to the closure operator, and the valve closure will engage the valve seat on the valve body in place of the circumferential seal, to substantially prevent escape of lading from the tank.

Bottom operable tank car valve

A bottom operable lading valve assembly for tank cars includes a valve closure plug movable between open and closed positions relative to a circular plug seat located within a valve body opening. A housing is affixed to the valve body with fasteners comprising a shear plane. The housing includes a generally vertical housing opening into which a rotatable valve operator is mounted comprising a lower tool connection portion, a shaft portion and an upper operating portion. The upper operating portion includes upper operator threads which engage an operating stem depending from the closure plug. The upper operating portion and the valve stem terminate on or above the shear plane. The valve operator shaft portion separates below the shear plane in the event impact causes the housing to shear off along the shear plane to maintain the upper operating portion, valve stem and closure plug in seated position to prevent escape of lading. During rotation of the valve operator in a direction to move the closure plug to open position, the closure plug wipes the plug seat. Further rotation of the valve operator causes the plug to move vertically toward open position without rotation. Rotation of the valve operator from open position causes the plug to move vertically downwardly to a closed and seated position without rotation. A screen may be provided extending up into the tank from the valve body to protect the valve assembly from objects located inside the tank.

Bottom operable tank car valve assembly having shear plane

An adapter for use with a bottom operable tank car valve assembly includes an upper attachment portion for quickly attaching the adapter to a bottom operable tank car valve guard assembly. The adapter includes a body portion having one or more spouts extending radially outwardly from the body portion to receive loading and unloading conduits. An adapter operator is provided having a lower tool connection portion and a vertical extension extending upwardly within the adapter for attachment to a valve closure operator located within the valve guard assembly for opening and closing the tank car valve. The present invention also includes a method of transporting lading from place to place utilizing the adapter for loading and unloading the lading and the valve guard assembly while the car is in transit to protect the valve closure from impacts in transit.

A bottom operable lading valve assembly for tank cars includes a valve closure plug movable between open and closed positions relative to a circular plug seat located within a valve body opening. A housing is affixed to the valve body with fasteners comprising a shear plane. The housing includes a generally vertical housing opening into which a rotatable valve operator is mounted comprising a lower tool connection portion and an upper operating portion. The upper operating portion includes upper operator threads which engage an operating stem depending from the valve plug. The valve operator separates below the shear plane in the event impact causes the housing to shear off along the shear plane to maintain the closure plug in seated position to prevent escape of lading. During rotation of the valve operator in a direction to move the closure plug to open position, the closure plug wipes the plug seat. Further rotation of the valve operator causes the plug to move vertically toward open position without rotation. Rotation of the valve operator from open position causes the plug to move vertically downwardly to a closed and seated position without rotation.

In a bottom operable railway tank car valve assembly, a valve closure is movable between open and closed positions relative to an opening in a valve body mounted in the tank bottom for loading or unloading the lading. An operator depends from the valve closure. The lower end is contoured to receive a tool for opening and closing the valve closure. A valve guard is attached to the valve body with mechanical fasteners which constitute a shear plane. The valve guard includes a hollow depending portion. A valve guard cap is attached to the depending portion. The valve guard cap includes a depending protrusion which extends below the depending portion, and a transverse portion which extends below, and is spaced from, the bottom of the valve operator. If the valve guard or the valve guard cap is impacted, the loads are transmitted up through the valve guard to the valve body. Horizontal loads may cause the valve guard to shear off along the shear plane. Vertical loads are transmitted into the relatively massive tank shell. However, little, if any impact force is transmitted to the valve operator or the valve closure located within the valve body. For loading and unloading the valve guard cap is removed, and an adapter is attached to the valve guard, the adapter including a tool for raising and lowering the valve closure.

Valve guard for bottom operated tank car valve

A bottom outlet for tanks is provided including a valve body welded to an opening in the bottom of the tank. The valve body has an opening into which a retainer assembly is fitted to urge a seal into engagement with at least a portion of the valve body. The retainer assembly includes a threaded center portion and a retainer vertical portion having an opening therein. A valve plug is mounted to be vertically movable between closed and open positions, into and out of engagement with the retainer vertical portion. A lower housing is affixed to the valve body with mechanical fasteners which define a first shear plane. The housing has an opening into which a valve operator assembly is mounted. The valve operator assembly includes a first valve operator having a lower tool connection and a first operator extension. The first operator extension has a first valve operator opening into which a second valve operator is inserted and is drivably engaged. The second valve operator includes a second shear plane and has threads which engage the threads in the threaded center portion of the retainer assembly. These threads may define the second shear plane. The second valve operator engages the valve plug, and moves the same between closed and open positions. A seal member is affixed to the valve plug or to the retainer vertical portion.
