A system for performing failover switches in an optical network, such as a time and wavelength division passive optical networks (TWDM PON) like NG-PON2, includes a backup optical line terminal (OLT) for backing up communications of a primary OLT. The backup OLT is configured to allocate small upstream time slots, referred to herein as 'de minimis' time slots, to at least one optical network terminal (ONT) communicating with the primary OLT during normal operation. When a failure occurs that prevents communication between the ONT and the primary OLT, the ONT autonomously tunes to the upstream and downstream wavelength pairs of the backup OLT and begins to transmit data to the backup OLT in the de minimis time slot allocated to it. The presence of data in the de minimis time slot indicates the occurrence of a failover switch to the backup OLT, and the backup OLT then begins to allocate time slots to this ONT, which is normally serviced by the primary OLT according to its normal TDM algorithm.

Systems and methods for performing optical line terminal (OLT) failover switches in optical networks

The present disclosure generally pertains to systems and methods for provisioning nodes of a packet network. Rather than requiring a user to individually set the configuration parameters of each node to achieve a desired behavior, the user is presented with options of various predefined network behaviors and/or the option of customizing a network behavior, such as a queuing, scheduling, or shaping profile, and each node is configured to automatically provision its configuration parameters to implement the desired behavior. Information is passed from node-to-node so that each node can automatically provision its settings to implement such behavior. Thus, the network is automatically provisioned thereby facilitating the provisioning process. Automatic provisioning also helps to ensure a correct network configuration. Indeed, since the provisioning is automatic, at least some manual provisioning errors may be prevented.

Systems and methods for provisioning nodes of a packet network

The apparatus and method herein splits the function of a digital subscriber line (DSL) modem data pump between a digital signal processor (DSP) and a general purpose host central processing unit (CPU). The DSP () handles all front end data pump processing such as interface to an analog front end (and), FFT processing, FEQ processing, QAM decoding, and bit formatting. The host CPU () handles all back end data pump processing such as DMT tone deordering, data deinterleaving, error detection and correcting, bit descrambling, CRC processing, and the like. In order to enable the DSP () and the CPU () to communicate with each other effectively, buffers () under the control of specialized buffer management methodology (FIG.) are used.

A data communication system comprises a forward error correction (FEC) module, a first transceiver, a second transceiver, and logic. The FEC module is configured to receive data and to define FEC code words based on the received data. The first transceiver is coupled to a first communication line, and the second transceiver is coupled to a second communication line. The logic is configured to selectively enable the FEC module to implement a desired FEC scheme based on an estimated error rate associated with the first communication line and an estimated error rate associated with the second communication line.

A forward error correction system comprises a forward error correction (FEC) manager and a transmitter. The FEC manager is configured to receive a data stream and to define a plurality of FEC code words based on the data stream. Each of the FEC code words comprises a data portion and a checksum portion that may be used to recover at least one character of the data portion. The FEC manager is configured to interleave characters of the FEC code words such that the FEC code words are transmitted, by the transmitter, to a remote receiver in an interleaved fashion.
