Pulps, cellulose ether products, and methods of making pulps are described.

Crosslinked pulps, cellulose ether products made therefrom; and related methods of making pulps and cellulose ether products

Grafted, crosslinked cellulosic materials include cellulose fibers and polymer chains composed of at least one monoethylenically unsaturated acid group-containing monomer (such as acrylic acid) grafted thereto, in which one or more of said cellulose fibers and said polymer chains are crosslinked (such as by intra-fiber chain-to-chain crosslinks). Some of such materials are characterized by a wet bulk of about 10.0-17.0 cm3/g, an IPRP value of about 1000 to 7700 cm2/MPa&#xb7;sec, and/or a MAP value of about 7.0 to 38 cm H2O. Methods for producing such materials may include grafting polymer chains from a cellulosic substrate, followed by treating the grafted material with a crosslinking agent adapted to effect crosslinking of one or more of the cellulosic substrate or the polymer chains. Example crosslinking mechanisms include esterfication reactions, ionic reactions, and radical reactions, and example crosslinking agents include pentaerythritol, homopolymers of the graft species monomer, and hyperbranched polymers.

Grafted crosslinked cellulose

Methods of forming crosslinked cellulose include mixing a crosslinking agent with cellulose mat fiber fragments composed of hydrogen-bonded cellulose fibers and having a solids content of about 45-95% to form a substantially homogenous mixture of non-crosslinked, individualized cellulose fibers, drying the resulting mixture to 85-100% solids, then curing the dried mixture under conditions effective to crosslink the cellulose fibers. Some of such methods may include fragmenting a cellulose fiber mat to form the mat fragments. Systems include a mixing unit (such as a high-consistency mixer) configured to form, from the mat fragments and a crosslinking agent, a substantially homogenous mixture of non-crosslinked, individualized cellulose fibers and crosslinking agent, at ambient conditions, a drying unit to dry the substantially homogenous mixture to a consistency of 85-100%, and a curing unit and to cure the crosslinking agent to form dried and cured crosslinked cellulose fibers.

Modified fiber from shredded pulp sheets, methods, and systems

Methods of forming crosslinked cellulose include mixing a crosslinking agent with an aqueous mixture of cellulose fibers containing little to no excess water (e.g., solids content of 25-55%), drying the resulting mixture to 85-100% solids, then curing the dried mixture to crosslink the cellulose fibers. Systems include a mixing unit to form, from an aqueous mixture of unbonded cellulose fibers having a solids content of about 25-55% and a crosslinking agent, a substantially homogenous mixture of non-crosslinked, unbonded cellulose fibers and crosslinking agent; a drying unit to dry the substantially homogenous mixture to a consistency of 85-100%; and a curing unit and to cure the crosslinking agent to form dried and cured crosslinked cellulose fibers. Intrafiber crosslinked cellulose pulp fibers produced by such methods and/or systems have a chemical on pulp level of about 2-14% and an AFAQ capacity of at least 12.0 g/g.

The process of making crosslinked cellulose pulp fiber comprising plasma treating a sheet of cellulose pulp fiber before the sheet is impregnated with a crosslinking formulation which comprises a crosslinking agent and a catalyst, then defiberizing the treated cellulose pulp sheet to form treated defiberized cellulose pulp, then heating and curing the treated defiberized cellulose pulp to form intrafiber crosslinked cellulose pulp fibers.
