A vortex shedding flowmeter has a vortex sensor with a cantilever mounted transducer vane comprising a piezoelectric polymer film laminated together with an elastic substrate and that is encapsulated in an elastomeric integument to enable the transducer vane to withstand vortex pressure fields that span more than three orders of magnitude with sensitivities that provide high turn down ratios.

A method is provided for acquiring multiple NMR response signal data in rapid succession for averaging NMR spectral data from a sample. The fluid sample is placed in a capillary that extends through the magnetic field of the NMR spectrometer, including through the center of the magnetic field to place a segment of the sample in the magnetic center. After the sample fluid, initially magnetized by the magnetic field, is activated to emit an NMR pulse signal, the fluid in the capillary is advanced rapidly to put another pre-magnetized segment of the sample fluid in the fluid center, acquiring an NRM pulse signal, and continuing the cycle until a desired number of NMR response data signals from the sample have been acquired. Those response data from multiple acquisitions are then averaged.

Valve closure seating method and apparatus

A vortex detector comprises a generally cylindrical housing or body that defines a flow passage extending from an upstream end to a downstream end. A vortex generator disposed diametrically across the cylindrical housing near the upstream end of the cylindrical housing and oriented substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal central axis of the flow passage generates a vortex street in a fluid flowing in the flow passage. The vortex street created by the vortex generator impacts a vane located downstream of the vortex generator and connected at one end to the cylindrical housing substantially spans the flow passage diametrically and substantially parallel to the vortex generator such that vibrations or motion are generated in the vane. The end of the vane connected to the housing includes an area of reduced thickness that acts as a resilient, elastic hinged joint for the motion of the vane. Strain gauge transducers in the area of reduced thickness detect deflections or vibrations of the vane caused by the vortices and produce electric signals having amplitudes and frequencies that are related to the strengths and frequencies of the passing vortices.

A micro-mass flow controller (10) has a sonic choked flow restriction (28) with an oscillatable valve (26) for repetitiously opening and closing the sonic choked flow restriction (28) in a time-modulated sequence to set or vary mass flow rate of gas through the sonic choked flow restriction (28) over a period of time to something between no flow and maximum mass flow rate. A bimorph piezoelectric actuator (40) is coated in a sputtered dielectric layer (78) and then encapsulated in stainless steel or other metal cladding (80). A closure member (46) on the actuator (40) is registered to a valve seat (70) by actuating the actuator (40) to force the closure member (46) in a puddle of adhesive (86) against the valve seat (70) until the adhesive (86) cures.

Clad piezoelectric valve actuator and application of same in controlling

A micro mass flow controller is provided to accurately and reliably control or meter a mass flow rate of gas flowing at very low rates. The flow controller includes a sonic choked flow restriction with an oscillateable valve that is operable to repetitiously open and close the flow restriction in a time-modulated manner. The flow controller takes measurements of gas inlet pressures and temperatures in an inlet plenum and, at least partially, based on these measurements imposes a duty cycle on the valve by sequentially starting and stopping the sonic choked flow through the flow restriction. The duty cycle of the valve in one embodiment is the ratio of open time to the sum of the open time and the closed time for the valve. The valve includes an actuator comprising an elongated, cantilevered, piezoelectric bimorph element connected to a driver circuit that provides time-modulated positive and negative voltages to alternately drive the bimorph element to bend upward and downward to open and close the valve to mass flow control or meter gas flow.

Micro mass flow control apparatus and method

A densitometer (10) includes a gas sample plenum (40) that is connected to a gas supply pipe (26) via a flow-restricted inlet duct (42) to at least partially isolate and damp the sample plenum (40) from shocks and noises, turbulences, and abrupt pressure changes in the gas supply. A cantilevered vane (110) is positioned in the sample plenum (40) for gas density determinations on the principle that resonant frequency of the vane (110) is a function of the density of the gas in the sample plenum (40). The resonant frequency of the vane (110) in the gas is determined by applying a magnetic field generated by a driver assembly 120 against the vane (110) and detecting the resonant frequency with a vibration detector (117), which is connected to the driver assembly 120 in a phase locked loop.

Densitometer

A supply plenum connected to a source of compressed natural gas (CNG) and a control valve assembly for selectively turning on the flow of CNG through a sonic nozzle and out through a dispensing hose assembly. Pressure and temperature transducers connected to the supply plenum measure the stagnation pressure and temperature of the CNG and the ambient temperature, and a pressure transducer fluidically connected to the vehicle tank via the dispensing hose assembly monitors the pressure of the CNG in the vehicle tank. An electronic control system connected to the pressure and temperature transducers and to the control valve assembly calculates a vehicle tank cut-off pressure based on the ambient temperature and on the pressure rating of the vehicle tank that has been pre-programmed into the electronic control system, calculates the volume of the vehicle tank and the additional mass of CNG required to increase the tank pressure to the cut-off pressure, and automatically turns off the CNG flow when the additional mass has been dispensed into the vehicle tank. The electronic control system also determines the amount of CNG dispensed through the sonic nozzle based on the upstream stagnation temperature and pressure of the CNG and the length of time the CNG was flowing through the sonic nozzle.

A mass flow meter for a gas dispenser includes apparatus and method for determining specific heat ratio of the gas as a function of two pressure measurements in relation to a nozzle and for determining mass flow rate as a function of the specific heat ratio, the two pressure measurements in relation to the nozzle, and a density measurement of the gas.

A tool support and presentation device is described. The device has a base with a centrally mounted spindle and a resilient diaphragm mounted on the spindle. The diaphragm has plural collets therein and each collet may receive a tool. The diaphragm may be automatically or manually flexed to display the tools in an easily accessible configuration. In a preferred embodiment, the device is cylindrical and the diaphragm is automatically flexed by a spring disposed between the diaphragm and the base which upwardly urges a central portion of the diaphragm and thereby presents the tools in a frustoconical array.

Method and apparatus for dispensing natural gas

A supply plenum connected to a source of compressed natural gas (CNG) and a control valve assembly for selectively turning on the flow of CNG through a sonic nozzle and out through a dispensing hose assembly. Pressure and temperature transducers connected to the supply plenum measure the stagnation pressure and temperature of the CNG and the ambient temperature, and a pressure transducer fluidically connected to the vehicle tank via the dispensing hose assembly monitors the discharge pressure of the CNG. An electronic control system connected to the pressure and temperature transducers and to the control valve assembly calculates a vehicle tank cut-off pressure based on the ambient temperature and on the pressure rating of the vehicle tank that has been pre-programmed into the electronic control system and automatically turns off the CNG flow when the discharge pressure reaches the cut-off pressure and determines the amount of CNG dispensed through the sonic nozzle based on the stagnation temperature and the stagnation pressure of the CNG and the length of time the CNG was flowing through the sonic nozzle.

A steam system management method and apparatus includes a condensate collection reservoir with a pilot operated, pressure actuated dump valve that has a quick, snap action fully open/fully closed mode of operation. The pilot operation of the dump valve is actuated by a very low voltage solenoid actuator powered by a thermal-electric generator which thermionically converts heat from the steam system directly to electricity. Condensate dumps are controlled by liquid level sensing switches positioned near the top and bottom of the reservoir and electrically connected to a relay logic that turns the solenoid on and off. Temperature sensors positioned in the steam system and adjacent the thermal-electric generator are utilized in combination with the thermal electric generator and a microprocessor to monitor the air content in the steam system and to open the dump valve to purge excess air from the steam system. A voltage converter and voltage regulator are provided to convert very low voltage output from the thermal-electric generator to a higher voltage necessary to operate the microprocessor, and management information output displays are provided to indicate valve status, modes of operation, quantities of condensate dumped, and failure alarm.

Method and apparatus for managing steam systems

A method and apparatus for measuring steam quality of wet or two-phase flowing steam includes a flow-through densitometer comprised of two parallel tubes connected to two common nodes, a vibrator for causing the tubes to vibrate, and a transducer for detecting the frequency and amplitude of the vibrations. A temperature probe detects the temperature of the steam, and a computer is used to monitor the vibrations and temperature and to calculate steam quality. The computer can also be used to control the vibrator. An intake sampler is positioned in a flowing steam line to divert a representative sample of the wet steam into the densitometer. The bulk density of the steam is determined as a function of the fundamental frequency of the densitometer with the steam flowing therethrough, and the steam quality is determined as a function of the bulk density and vapor density, which is a function of temperature.
