A lightweight, compact turbocharger for small internal combustion engines having a reduced number of component parts for simplified construction, an improved bearing structure and a novel means of transmitting control pressure to the actuator.

Turbocharger

A control system is provided for a supercharged diesel engine to control engine air inflow in response to an operator-selected fuel flow and in accordance with a predetermined air-fuel ratio schedule chosen for minimizing undesirable exhaust emissions throughout a broad range of engine operating conditions.

Supercharged diesel engine air inflow control system

A control system is provided for a supercharged diesel engine to control engine air flow in response to an operator-selected fuel flow and in accordance with a predetermined air-fuel ratio schedule chosen for minimizing undesirable exhaust emissions throughout a broad range of engine operating conditions. The control system includes a force-biased relief valve movable between closed and open positions in response to the pressure of air supplied to the engine, wherein the force-bias acting upon the relief valve is altered in response to the operator-selected fuel flow to the engine.

A control system is provided for a supercharged diesel engine to control engine air inflow in response to an operator-selected fuel flow and in accordance with a predetermined air-fuel ratio schedule chosen for minimizing undesirable exhaust emissions throughout a broad range of engine operating conditions. The control system includes a force-biased relief valve for adjusting engine air inflow, wherein the relief valve is movably responsive to the pressure of air supplied to the engine and the force-bias is controlled in accordance with engine fuel flow.

Supercharged diesel engine air flow control system

A pneumatically controlled altitude compensating boost control for maintaining a constant intake manifold pressure on a turbocharged engine having a wastegate valve for selectively bypassing engine exhaust gas around the turbine. The altitude compensating boost control comprises an altitude compensating bleed valve means which varies the compressor outlet pressure in the control in response to the change in ambient pressure and a wastegate actuator which is responsive to the ambient pressure and the varied compressor outlet pressure.

A turbine housing assembly for use in a turbocharger having an exhaust gas driven turbine wheel for rotatably driving a compressor impeller. The assembly includes a turbine housing having an exducer passage into which exhaust gases are discharged from the turbine wheel. A bypass passage in the turbine housing and a pivoting wastegate valve cooperate to provide an efficient exhaust ejector for drawing gases through the exducer passage to reduce back-pressure on the engine. The turbine housing further includes an air vent for circulation of cooling air between the bypass and exducer passages.

A control actuator for a turbocharger comprises a diaphragm-displaced actuator rod projecting outwardly from an actuator housing through a seal permitting axial and angular rod movement for variably positioning a turbocharger wastegate valve.

Turbocharger control actuator

A turbocharger having an exhaust gas driven turbine for driving a compressor which supplies high pressure charge air to an internal combustion engine. A turbine wheel rotates within a turbine housing having a gas inlet and a gas outlet for circulation of exhaust gases to drive the turbine. The exhaust gases exit through a gas discharge housing mounted on the turbine housing and including a bypass chamber communicating with the gas inlet. A turbine bypass valve on the discharge housing is controllably actuated to seat on the turbine housing to close the bypass chamber.

Turbocharger control

Turbocharged engine air supply cooling arrangement and method that utilizes an air-to-air heat exchanger provided with a fan to circulate ambient air about the heat exchanger to cool turbocharger compressor discharge air. The air is cooled to near, but above, the temperature of the ambient air as it passes through the heat exchanger. The air is then conveyed through a turbine which is mechanically connected to rotate the fan in response to the energy of expansion of the air. As the air expands through the turbine, it is cooled to a lower temperature, even below that of the ambient air before delivery to the engine.
