A method of securing a termination element to an end portion of a wire rope, the termination element having an elongated, ductile tubular sleeve portion, including the steps of positioning the end portion of a wire rope within the tubular sleeve portion, positioning the sleeve portion between co-acting dies, the dies having an opening that is non-circular in cross-section, closing the dies a first time to deform the sleeve portion about the wire rope and into a non-circular external cross-section shape opening dies rotating the sleeve portion less than 180&deg; closing the dies a second time to form the sleeve portion into a final external non-circular shape and opening the dies to remove the termination element.

The termination area of a wire rope is formed by a round or oval sleeve that is formed into a quasi-polygonal, preferably quasi-hexagonal, swage using a two pass die closing method using apparatus wherein opposing die cavity faces or sides include a reservoir space for swage material during the first pass of the die closing.

A coupler for connecting a web-type sling to other fittings is comprised of a U-shaped member having legs with threaded ends that interconnect with a clasp that non-rotatably retain nuts, threaded to the legs, in sockets. The clasp includes a central arcuate saddle to receive the web sling. A pin extends across the U-shaped member legs above the arcuate saddle to retain the web sling upon the saddle.

A wedge socket assembly having a wedge socket, a pin for connecting objects to the wedge socket, a wedge, and a bolt for holding the wedge in the wedge socket. The wedge socket has an elongated, hollow basket of substantially rectangular cross-section. The hollow basket has a large opening at a first end, a small opening at a second end, and an interior cross-section tapering from said large opening to said small opening. Connected to the basket are a pair of jaws extending from opposite sides of the first end, and the jaws each have an opening therethrough aligned with one another, with the pin inserted through the openings and retained by a cotter pin. The wedge has a first wedge portion with a large end and a small end, and is of substantially the same shape as the interior of the basket. An extended portion is connected to the small end of the first wedge portion and has an opening therethrough, and is sized such that when the wedge is positioned within the basket the extended portion extends through the small opening. The bolt is inserted into the opening in the extended portion, and is retained in the opening by a nut. In an alternate embodiment, a forged wire rope clip connects a wire rope to the extended wedge portion through the opening.

A gate latch mounted on a hook shank and spanning the mouth of the hook from its shank to its tip includes a sliding lock bar which can be selectively linearly positioned in closed condition retention slots to prevent opening of the gate latch or in open condition retention slots to permit rotation of the gate latch from a closed to an open condition.

A flapper type gate latch for a crane hook includes a hand operated interlocking prevent member which in one mode can be immovably retained closing the mouth of the hook, and in another mode can be immovably retained permitting the free movement of the gate latch from its biased normally closed position to a position wherein the mouth of the hook is open.

A pair of goggles for protecting the eyes from contamination is provided having a plurality of sliding lenses in a frame so that when the outer most lens becomes dirty it is pushed down into the frame of the goggles leaving a clear view through the remaining lenses. Similarly when the next lens becomes dirty it also slides down leaving the remaining lenses in place, said procedure being repeated until all the movable lenses have been utilized.
