A planet gear for use in an air turbine starter is formed of a first part having a set of gear teeth at a first axial location. A shaft extends axially away from the first set of gear teeth. A second part is interference fit on the first part, with the second part having a second set of gear teeth. The second part is mounted on the shaft of the first part. An outer diameter of the shaft is selected to be significantly larger than an inner diameter of a cylindrical portion of the second part which is interference fit on the shaft. A ratio of the outer diameter to the inner diameter is between 1.0005 and 1.0100. A planetary gear system, an air turbine starter and a method of installing a planet gear are also disclosed.

An assembly includes an output shaft, an input shaft with an internal reservoir, and a clutch. The clutch is adapted to selectively engage and couple the input shaft to the output shaft. The clutch has a pressure chamber that communicates with the reservoir of the input shaft. The reservoir has a sufficient volume to provide the pressure chamber with a fluid pressure adequate to maintain engagement of the clutch during an interruption of a fluid supply to the input shaft and clutch.

A method of manufacturing a gear cluster from a first gear body and a second gear body comprises producing a first set of gear teeth on the first gear body such that each tooth on the first set of gear teeth has a first pitch point. The second gear body is axially aligned with the first gear body. A timing position for a second set of gear teeth on the second gear body is determined by dimensioning from the first set of gear teeth. A second set of gear teeth on the second gear body is produced based on the timing position and each tooth on the second set of gear teeth has a second pitch point. The gear cluster is inspected for timing position by measuring a reference dimension between the first pitch point and the second pitch point.

Methods for cluster gear timing and manufacturing

The invention is directed to a portable wing extension for releasably securing to a roof ladder. The wing extension includes a horizontal wing section secured to slide through supports which are received within adjacent rungs of the ladder. A pair of lock pins releasably secure the wing extensions to the ladder. Wing extensions can be attached to either or both sides of the ladder. The attached wing extensions permit a firefighter to safely cut a ventilation hole in a roof beyond the width of the ladder at any location on the roof.
