A laminate structure for producing paperboard or polymer containers and blow molded bottles containing a barrier structure of layer(s) of polyethylene terephthalate and a layer of ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer, wherein no polyolefin based tie layers are used in the structure. The container or bottle produced therefrom is recyclable and has dimensional stability.

A chill roll for cooling a web is provided and includes a cylindrical outer roll having an inner and an outer surface, the inner surface of the outer roll having circumferential projections spaced at intervals along its length forming circumferential channels therebetween. The chill roll further has a cylindrical inner roll having an inner and an outer surface, and a diameter less than a diameter of the outer cylindrical roll and defining an annular space between the outer surface of the cylindrical inner roll and the inner surface of the cylindrical outer roll, allowing a coolant material to flow into and out of the circumferential channels and to contact the inner surface of the cylindrical outer roll to uniformly cool the outer surface of the cylindrical outer roll. A cylindrical middle shell is disposed between the inner surface of the cylindrical outer roll and the outer surface of the cylindrical inner roll allowing passage of the coolant material from the cylindrical inner roll to be transferred into and out of the circumferential channels through openings disposed along the cylindrical middle shell.

High production chill roll

A method of decreasing the bulge of gable top cartons by evaluating and modifying top sealing heat patterns. Cartons are formed, dye stained and the quality of the seal evaluated for heat damage and top seal quality. The heating pattern is adjusted as required, and the resulting heat seal is reevaluated to determine if further adjustments are required, so that the resulting cartons can achieve a near air-tight condition in the headspace of the carton to thereby resist bulging.

Method of controlling bulging of gable top cartons

A paperboard polymer coated carton having protected board raw edge surfaces for packaging food and non-food products is provided in which a thin slice of the inside carton raw edge surface is removed or skived away from the side seam flap. The thin slice includes all of the inside polymer layers and most of the paperboard. The resulting outside flap is folded into the carton inside over the paperboard raw edge surface, and is flame sealed to the inside polar polymer layer, to seal the paperboard raw edge surface. The sealed edge surface is then flame sealed to the inside of the opposite paperboard surface, thereby creating an additional inside-outside flame seal. By such a process only inside-outside seals are formed or polar-covalent seals.

Paperboard cartons having protected board raw edges surfaces and method

A non-foil composite structure is provided having a substantial barrier to the loss of moisture, oxygen, and organic vapor and which is easily sealable with a shelf-life to at least one year for food and non-food products during dry shelf storage, and which is environmentally friendly. The laminate may have, from the outer atmosphere exposed surface to the inner surface contacting the contents of the container; a first exterior layer of a low density polyethylene polymer; a paperboard substrate; a first interior layer laminate coating of nylon with a tie layer; a second interior layer of low density polyethylene polymer; a third interior layer of high density polyethylene polymer; and an innermost and product contacting layer of low density polyethylene polymer.

The present invention relates to a biodegradable paperboard-based package for various food products. The package utilizes a novel heat-sealable laminate structure wherein the exterior gloss heat-sealable layer is a degradable polymeric resin material such as a polyvinyl alcohol resin or a starch based low density polyethylene polymer resin. Utilization of the material in a novel fashion accelerates the paperboard substrate's degradative properties and tendencies.

Biodegradable paperboard laminate structure

A dual ovenable paperboard based structure which contains a food contact resin layer. The resin layer in direct contact with the ovenable food product exhibits superior food release properties, grease and oil resistance, and resistance to warpage even after extended periods of time following oven heating. The unique laminate is formed via coextrusion coating techniques on conventional coextrusion equipment at conventional temperatures. The resulting product has a high degree of adhesion between the paperboard and the polymethylpentene food contact layer, and is capable of being utilized for forming pressed or locked corner food trays which can be subjected to oven cooking temperatures.

In addition, the novel polymer resin layers act to caulk the seams and channels present in the carton providing a sealed leak free container.

The present invention relates to an improved composite barrier laminate for an improved container for citrus juices and other liquids. The container utilizes a paperboard barrier laminate for the containment of essential oils and the prevention of losses of vitamin C. The laminate makes use of an inner barrier layer of a heat-sealable oxygen and flavor oil barrier material to enhance the barrier properties of the laminate as well as an extremely thin low density polyethylene food contact layer to provide a resultant secure homogenous non-polar heat seal.
