A muffler including fiberglass packing is assembled and suitable for use in a closed refrigeration system by avoiding the generation of fiberglass debris and preventing its entry into the fluid path. A perforate tube is serially overlain by a heat resistant fabric covering, a fiberglass packing and a circumferentially adjustable and collapsible sleeve which are inserted as a subassembly into the shell of a pressure vessel.

A centrifugal compressor is provided with a collector for receiving refrigerant from the diffuser, and sound absorbent segments are placed within the collector and retained in place against one wall thereof. One method of retention is by way of a ring and a plurality of spring clip members. The silencer segments and the retaining ring and spring clip members are placed into the collector prior to installation of the diffuser. As the diffuser is attached to the collector, one edge engages a side of the ring so as to axially move it into its final fixed position, while at the same time causing the attached spring clip members to be placed in tension against the silencer segments to secure them in place.

Collector silencer for a centrifugal compressor

A silencer device is installed into the discharge pipe of a centrifugal compressor by first installing a channel shaped frame in the discharge pipe and then sliding the silencer device into the frame to be contained for operational use. The orientation and placement of the frame and its contained silencer device is parallel with the direction of flow to thereby reduce the resulting pressure drop, and it is placed near a turn in the discharge pipe such that the sound will tend to be reflected from the discharge pipe to cause multiple passes through the silencer device and thereby enhance its absorptive performance. The absorptive material within the silencer device is protected from erosion by a surrounding cloth bag composed of a fine weave Nomex material.
