A skull pin assembly for a head fixation device that allows for effective imaging with limited artifact is disclosed. The skull pin assembly comprises two components, a tip and a housing. The conical-shaped tip component engages the skull at a point and is configured to fit within the bore of the substantially cylindrical non-conductive housing component. The conical skull pin tip can be comprised of a material that causes limited artifact in medical imaging procedures. The conical skull pin tip can taper away from the point engaging the skull at a first angle and can seamlessly transition into a conical-shaped surface of the housing component. In one embodiment, a third surface of the housing component can also be tapered to meet the first surface of the tip component at the identical first angle of tapering.

Limited artifact skull pin

Head fixation devices and methods of fixating heads of patients for surgical procedures. The head fixation devices generally respectively comprise a skull clamp, a skull clamp arc assembly movable relative to the skull clamp, and a plurality of skull pins operable to engage and fixate heads of patients during neurosurgical and cervical spine procedures. The skull clamp can comprise a single skull pin on each end of the clamp. The two skull pins apply substantially equal compressive forces to the head of a patient. The skull clamp arc assembly, and an arc skull pin thereof, is pivotable to engage and disengage the patient's head for additional fixation support of the head.

Head fixation device

A head support system that has a fixation arc system that is adjustable both vertically and horizontally and is mounted to a patient support structure. The fixation arc system is positionable adjacent to, and provides lateral support for, the patient's head. A pin support is connected to, and extends from the fixation arc system. A pin is adjustably mounted to the pin support and contacts the patient's head to provide a lateral fixation thereof. The pin has a centerline that is rotatable about two axes of motion substantially perpendicular to the pin centerline.

Head support and stabilization system

A head support base unit enables enhanced capability for positioning the head of a patient at the end of a medical table, by incorporating into the handle assembly thereof an additional degree of freedom, namely rotatability along the longitudinal axis of the handle. More specifically, a pair of axially opposed, spring-biased ratchets are housed within the handle, to permit or prevent axial rotation of one end of the handle relative to the other. This enhanced flexibility an maneuverability is achieved without any added complexity, and without requiring any additional space. These advantages are further magnified if an additional like handle assembly is connected to the first handle assembly, with a link interconnected therebetween, because composite angles and off-axis positioning of the patient can be readily accommodated.

Head support base unit with multi-directional capability

A skull pin assembly for use with a skull clamp includes a skull pin that is slidable into contact with a head of a patient. A pin load applicator is removably connectable to the skull pin assembly and includes a loading shaft that is able to apply a force against an inner end of the skull pin. The pin load applicator also has a biasing element operable to apply a force on the loading shaft that, in turn, transfers the force to the skull pin. A load force indicator is connected to the loading shaft and provides an indication of the force being applied by the skull pin. The pin load applicator permits the force being applied by the skull pin to be adjusted to a desired value; and thereafter, the pin load applicator is removed from the skull pin assembly without changing the desired skull pin force.

A radiolucent halo-type retractor () having a radiolucent curvilinear fixed member () connected to a radiolucent curvilinear movable member (). Each of the fixed and movable members has a radiolucent male coupling () projecting outward from a convex surface () to receive a female coupling of a retractor arm. The ends () of the movable member are separated by a distance less than a distance separating the ends () of the fixed member. Radiolucent starburst connectors () are disposed on first ends of the fixed and movable members to secure the fixed and movable members at a desired angular orientation. Radiolucent starburst connectors () are also disposed on second ends of the fixed and movable members to secure the fixed and movable members at a desired angular orientation. A pin () rotatably connects the first ends. A locking shaft () rotatably connects the second ends and is operable to lock the fixed and movable members in a desired orientation.

Radiolucent retractor and related components

A head support system for use with a patient support. The head support system has a support structure with a crossbar extending transverse to, and connected to, the patient support. A head support device is removably mountable to a portion of the support structure exclusive of the crossbar and provides a static support for the patient's head. A head stabilization device is removably mountable to the crossbar of the support structure and stabilizes the patient's head.

Head support system

A surgical table extension has a radiolucent inner support member removably attachable to an end of a surgical table and extending outward therefrom in cantilever fashion. A radiolucent outer support member is mounted to the inner support member, and the outer support member is adjustable with respect to the inner support member to change the length of the table extension.

Variable length radiolucent surgical table extension

A radiolucent surgical table extension assembly for use in combination with a scanning machine having an enclosed scanning zone. A radiolucent support member has a proximal end adapted to be removably attached to one end of a table in a cantilever fashion. The radiolucent support member has a rigidity sufficient to support an upper torso and head of a patient. The table and the radiolucent support member are movable relative to the scanning machine to locate the radiolucent support member and the head of the patient within the scanning zone. A radiolucent mounting structure is connected to the radiolucent support member, and a radiolucent head support is attached to the radiolucent mounting structure for supporting the head of the patient. The radiolucent head support has an opening extending therethrough. The opening receives a locking clamp for attaching the radiolucent head support to the radiolucent mounting structure. In one embodiment, the head support is a radiolucent skull clamp having two frame members wherein each of the members has first legs extending adjacent each other. The first legs have openings extending therethrough, and the openings receive a locking clamp for attaching the radiolucent skull clamp to the radiolucent mounting structure.

Radiolucent surgical table extension assembly and method

An advantageous interoperative system includes a scanner &lsqb; &rsqb; with an enclosed scanning zone, an image guided system &lsqb; &rsqb; operatively connected to the scanner &lsqb; &rsqb;, a surgical table &lsqb; &rsqb; having a radiolucent member &lsqb; &rsqb; attached to one end thereof with a radiolucent support &lsqb; &rsqb; held near an outboard end &lsqb; &rsqb; of the radiolucent member &lsqb; &rsqb; by a radiolucent adaptor assembly &lsqb; &rsqb;, the radiolucent adaptor assembly &lsqb; &rsqb; being hingedly connected to both the radiolucent member &lsqb; &rsqb; and the radiolucent support &lsqb; &rsqb;. The table &lsqb; &rsqb; and the radiolucent member &lsqb; &rsqb; attached thereto are movable relative to the scanner &lsqb; &rsqb; to locate the radiolucent member &lsqb; &rsqb; and the head of a patient supported thereon within the scanning zone, to facilitate interoperative scans. The two spaced hinged connections of the radiolucent adaptor assembly &lsqb; &rsqb; promote versatility for the surgeon in positioning the radiolucent member &lsqb; &rsqb; and the patient stabilization device &lsqb; or &rsqb; within the scanning zone. The patient stabilization &lsqb; &rsqb; device may be a radiolucent skull clamp &lsqb; &rsqb; or a radiolucent horseshoe headrest &lsqb; &rsqb;, and the radiolucent skull clamp &lsqb; &rsqb; and radiolucent horseshoe headrest &lsqb; &rsqb; are mounted on supports &lsqb; &rsqb; which interchangeably connect to the radiolucent adaptor assembly &lsqb;

Hinged adaptor assembly for radiolucent table extension

A surgical instrument support is provided having an articulated arm with first structure on a proximal end of the arm. A lockable target ball is rotatably mounted on a distal end of the articulated arm, and the lockable ball has a diametric hole therein for receiving and supporting a surgical instrument. A mount has second structure that receives and secures the proximal end of the articulated arm. The first structure on the articulated arm cooperates with the second structure on the mount to automatically align the proximal end of the articulated arm with the mount in a repeatable relationship. The mount is adapted to be releasably attached to a fixed structure. Thus, after establishing a desired alignment of the lockable ball to a patient, the articulated arm can be removed from the fixed structure and then subsequently remounted therein without losing the desired alignment of the lockable ball with the patient.

Surgical instrument support and method

An elongated patient support table &lsqb;,&rsqb; with a horizontal patient support surface has a contoured radiolucent table extension assembly &lsqb;,&rsqb; connected thereto in cantilever fashion for supporting the head and upper torso of a patient &lsqb;,&rsqb;. An outer end of the extension assembly &lsqb;,&rsqb; has a reduced width compared to the support table &lsqb;,&rsqb; to enable extendable movement of the radiolucent extension assembly &lsqb;,&rsqb; into a scanning zone defined by a central opening &lsqb;,&rsqb; of a diagnostic unit such as a CT scanner &lsqb;,&rsqb;. The table extension assembly &lsqb;,&rsqb; supports the patient &lsqb;,&rsqb; via an inboard radiolucent horseshoe headrest &lsqb;,&rsqb; and an outer tool support &lsqb;,&rsqb; for holding an outer stabilization device &lsqb;,&rsqb; such as a radiolucent skull clamp &lsqb;,&rsqb;. The combination of the support table &lsqb;,&rsqb; with the radiolucent table extension assembly &lsqb;,&rsqb; and the inner and outer stabilization devices &lsqb;,&rsqb; support the patient &lsqb;,&rsqb; in a desired position during successive scanning or surgical procedures. With an imaging system &lsqb;,&rsqb; operatively connected to the CT scanner &lsqb;,&rsqb;, the table extension assembly &lsqb;,&rsqb; permits a neurosurgeon to conveniently obtain updated images of the scanned region after performing a stereotactic operative procedure, thereby to immediately and easily determine if any follow-up procedures are necessary before closing up the surgical incision.

Radiolucent table extension assembly

An elongated patient support table with a horizontal patient support surface is provided with a radiolucent table extension connected thereto in cantilever fashion for supporting the head and upper torso of a patient. The outer end of the extension has a reduced width compared to the support table to enable extendable movement of the radiolucent extension into a scanning zone of a diagnostic unit such as a CT scanner. The table extension has at its outer end a tool support for supporting and stabilizing medical instruments, and the table extension is tiltable above and below the horizontal. The combination of the support table with the radiolucent table extension supports the patient in a desired posture for an operative procedure both during the scanning and surgical procedures.

Radiolucent table extension and method

A spinal fixation device includes a threaded stud having an open-ended axial slot to straddle a rod of a vertebral support, and a bracket which is rotatable on the stud. A vertebra bone screw passes through an opening in a distal end of the bracket. The stud and bracket are locked in position relative to the rod by a nut. An insert within the slot bears against the rod and prevents the stud from being deformed by the force of the nut on the stud segments. The bracket can be rotated around the stud; and the stud can be rotated around and slid along the rod, to afford great adjustability and ease of attachment.
