A system and method of reducing particulate matter accumulation in a diesel particulate filter of an exhaust system of a vehicle comprises operating the vehicle including an engine connected to the exhaust system in a drive mode. At least one parameter indicative of particulate matter accumulation in the diesel particulate filter is monitored and evaluated against a predetermined particulate matter accumulation limit. Control logic determines at least one operating parameter of the vehicle and adjusts the transmission assembly from a first transmission position to at least one second transmission position to increase engine speed and generate higher exhaust gas flow when the particulate matter accumulation is greater than the predetermined particulate matter accumulation to regenerate the diesel particulate filter.

System and method for particulate filter regeneration

A selective catalytic reduction device (SCR) system performs intrusive steady state dosing correction (SSDC) when a NOx error between a predicted and measured downstream NOx value exceeds a threshold. In SSDC, if NOx breakthrough or NH3 slip is detected above a SSDC threshold, a short term reductant dosing adaptation occurs. Optionally long term dosing adaptations occur if the magnitude of previous short term adaptations exceed a short term adaptation threshold. If SSDC is insufficiently improving SCR performance based on the number of intrusive events occurring within a period of time and the change in NOx error during the time period, a method includes modifying the SSDC protocol by one or more of increasing the duration of short term adaptations, decreasing the SSDC threshold, and reducing the short term adaptation threshold. The method further includes subsequently inhibiting intrusive events from occurring.

Methods for controlling selective catalytic reduction systems

Methods for monitoring thermal characteristics of oxidation catalyst (OC) catalytic composition(s) (CC) are provided, and comprise communicating exhaust gas to the OC, and determining a temperature change of the CC for the time frame based on a plurality of heat sources including heat imparted to the CC from exhaust gas enthalpy, heat imparted to the CC via oxidation of HC and/or CO in exhaust gas, heat imparted to the CC via water present in the exhaust gas condensing on the CC or heat removed from the CC via water evaporating from the CC, and optionally heat exchanged between the CC and the ambient environment. Heat imparted to the CC via water condensing on the CC can be determined using an increasing relative humidity proximate the CC, and heat removed from the CC via water evaporating from the CC can be determined using a decreasing relative humidity proximate the CC.

Methods for monitoring and modelling thermal characteristics of oxidation catalyst devices

Selective catalytic reduction filter (SCRF) devices and systems incorporating the same are provided. Systems can include an exhaust gas source, an exhaust gas conduit capable of receiving an exhaust gas stream from the exhaust gas source, and an SCRF device in fluid communication therewith. The SCRF device can include a filter, a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst disposed on at least portion of the filter, and a NOstorage coating on at least a portion of the filter. The NOstorage coating can include one or more of palladium, barium, or cerium. The NOstorage coating can be biased towards the upstream side of the filter. The NOstorage coating can overlap a portion of the SCR catalyst. The system can further include a water-absorbing alkali oxide. The water-absorbing alkali oxide can be disposed within the SCRF device, the exhaust gas conduit, or in an upstream oxidation catalyst device.

A method of controlling engine internal exhaust gas recirculation may include estimating a flow restriction through a diesel particulate filter in an exhaust system of an engine assembly and adjusting a backpressure control valve in the exhaust system downstream of the diesel particulate filter based on the flow restriction. A controlled amount of internal exhaust gas recirculation may be provided to the engine assembly based on adjusting the backpressure control valve.

A system and method for evaluating the efficiency of an oxidation catalyst of a vehicle exhaust system includes a diagnostic control system including a controller operatively connected to the exhaust system and at least one temperature sensor disposed proximate the oxidation catalyst to measure the temperature of the exhaust gas. The controller determines an operating state of at least one of the engine and exhaust system and initiates a particulate filter regeneration process in response to the detected operating state. The controller defines a first diagnostic index value and calculates a second diagnostic index value based upon the first diagnostic index value and an offset value. An oxidation catalyst efficiency validation module determines the efficiency of the oxidation catalyst.

System and method for vehicle oxidation catalyst monitoring

An integrated sensor-catalyst is disclosed for an after-treatment (AT) system used to filter an exhaust gas flow emitted by an internal combustion engine. The integrated sensor-catalyst includes a sensor element configured to detect a parameter of the exhaust gas flow. The integrated sensor-catalyst also includes a micro-catalyst element configured to filter a pollutant from the exhaust gas flow. Additionally, the integrated sensor-catalyst includes a housing configured to hold the sensor element and the micro-catalyst element and fix the micro-catalyst element relative to the sensor element such that the micro-catalyst element is arranged and maintained in the exhaust gas flow upstream of the sensor element. A vehicle including such an AT system with the integrated sensor-catalyst is also disclosed.

Integrated sensor-catalyst

An exhaust gas assembly includes an exhaust gas tube configured to receive an exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine, which includes at least one cylinder. An oxidation catalytic device may be operatively connected to the exhaust gas tube and includes a catalyst. A first temperature sensor is operatively connected to the oxidation catalytic device. A controller is operatively connected to the first temperature sensor. A hydrocarbon injector is operatively connected to the controller and configured to selectively inject an amount of hydrocarbon at a hydrocarbon injection rate. The controller includes a processor and tangible, non-transitory memory on which is recorded instructions for executing a method of controlling the hydrocarbon injection rate. The controller may be programmed to limit the hydrocarbon injection rate based at least partially on a combination of space velocity, temperature of the catalyst in the oxidation catalytic device and temperature of a particulate filter.

Control of hydrocarbon injection rate in an exhaust gas assembly

A method of controlling a concentration of hydrocarbons in exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine includes sensing an oxygen percentage of the flow of exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine and determining a concentration of hydrocarbons in the flow of exhaust gas. An engine control module may then adjust the sensed oxygen percentage of the exhaust gas based on the determined concentration of hydrocarbons in the flow of exhaust gas to define a corrected oxygen percentage. The control module may then control at least one of a hydrocarbon injection rate for in-cylinder combustion of the internal combustion engine, and a hydrocarbon injection rate for a post combustion exhaust gas treatment process, based on the corrected oxygen percentage, to control the concentration of hydrocarbons in the exhaust gas.

Over-fueling control based on oxygen sensor feedback

An engine assembly includes a camshaft having an exhaust cam lobe defining an exhaust lift region and an exhaust base circle region and an EGR cam lobe defining an EGR lift region and an EGR base circle region. The EGR lift region is rotationally offset from the exhaust lift region and the EGR base circle region is rotationally aligned with the exhaust lift region. An exhaust valve lift mechanism is engaged with an exhaust valve, the exhaust cam lobe and the EGR cam lobe and is operable in first and second modes. The exhaust valve remains closed when the EGR lift region engages the exhaust valve lift mechanism during the second mode and the exhaust valve is opened when the EGR lift region engages the exhaust valve lift mechanism during the first mode to provide exhaust gas flow into the combustion chamber during an intake stroke of the combustion chamber.

A method can determine diesel engine airflow in a diesel internal combustion engine using a late intake valve closure (LIVC) strategy. The method includes monitoring the air temperature in an intake manifold to determine an intake manifold air temperature; monitoring a coolant temperature; and determining the air temperature in an intake port of a diesel internal combustion engine. The method includes monitoring the air pressure in the intake manifold and monitoring the engine speed of the diesel internal combustion engine. Moreover, the method includes determining the air density in the diesel internal combustion engine and determining a diesel engine airflow; and determining an intake valve closure crank angle. The method additionally includes determining an adjusted diesel engine airflow based on the diesel engine airflow, engine speed, and intake valve closure crank angle.

Method and system for determining diesel engine airflow in an engine using a late intake valve closure strategy

A method for controlling re-circulation of exhaust gas (EGR) in an internal combustion engine includes receiving a signal indicative of an engine operating temperature and comparing the engine operating temperature to a first predetermined IEGR threshold. When the engine operating temperature is less than the first predetermined internal EGR threshold, a first internal EGR mode is activated, whereby engine emissions may be reduced or combustion stability may be enhanced. When the engine operating temperature is greater than the first predetermined internal EGR threshold, the first internal EGR mode is deactivated, and a second internal EGR mode is activated, whereby emissions may be reduced as exhaust system heating is accelerated. When the operating temperature is greater than the second temperature threshold, the second internal EGR mode may be deactivated a third mode may be enabled with only external EGR.

Method for controlling exhaust gas re-circulation system in an internal combustion engine

A split-cycle internal combustion engine is disclosed. The engine includes a cylinder block, and a plurality of cooperating power pistons and cylinders mounted in the cylinder block. The power pistons are configured to be energized by forces of combustion. The engine also includes a compressor piston and cylinder configured to compress a volume of air and transfer the compressed air to the power pistons, and an expander piston and cylinder configured to receive exhaust gases from the power pistons. The engine additionally includes a first crankshaft operatively connected to and rotatably driven by the power pistons, a second crankshaft operatively connected to the compressor piston and configured to rotatably drive the compressor piston, and a third crankshaft operatively connected to the expander piston and configured to be rotatably driven by the expander piston. The first, second, and third crankshafts are operatively connected to each other for coordinated rotation.
