The application is directed to an automatic dishwasher powder detergent composition with improved anti-filming and anti-spotting properties and to a method of using the detergent composition. The detergent composition comprises silica anti-filming agent, a water soluble polyacrylate antispotting agent, inorganic builder salts, chlorine bleach and bleach-stable detergent. The compositions provide reduced filming and spotting on dishware, glassware, china and the like, particularly in hard water at low temperature. The powder compositions are dry, free flowing and are highly soluble and readily dispersed in the wash bath.

A solid detergent composition for cleaning hard surfaces comprises an active detergent constituent which also serves as a carrier material, and a cleaning constituent. The cleaning constituent can comprise an acidic material, which is effective to remove soap scum from hard surfaces, or a bleach functional at a basic pH which is effective to bleach mildew. The detergent constituent comprises the essentially anhydrous neutralization product of an anionic surfactant such as a linear alkylbenzene sulfonic acid and a solid neutralizing material, such as a salt, oxide, or hydroxide of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, including sodium carbonate. The cleaning constituent, along with a filler material, is added to the detergent constituent during the course of and prior to the termination of the neutralization reaction. Also disclosed is a reusable scrubber pad incorporating the solid detergent composition. Within other aspects of the invention are solid, acidic cleaning compositions containing at least one polycarboxylic acid, solid cleaning compositions containing a bleach functional at a basic pH, and methods for manufacturing and using both the acid pH and the basic pH solid cleaning compositions.

A disposable pad comprising, a scrubber layer of coarse, resilient, porous, flexible material to scrub a soiled surface, said scrubber layer having a front surface for contacting the soiled surface, and a rear surface. A free flowing, stable, water-soluble, powdered automatic dishwashing detergent with superior solubility, handling and storage characteristics is provided. The compositions comprises an inorganic polyphosphate carrier onto which is absorbed a nonionic detergent. The 'loaded' carrier is mixed with powdered silicate and the other usual adjuvants such as bleach, pigment, etc. High levels of detergent are possible without adversely affecting the aforementioned advantages and superior characteristics.

An acidic liquid detergent composition for cleaning ceramic tiles without eroding the grout between the tiles comprises minor proportions of partially neutralized glutaric acid, partially neutralized phosphoric acid, surface active condensation product of ethylene oxide and higher linear alcohol of 10 to 20 carbon atoms, such as the condensation product of a linear secondary alcohol averaging about 13 carbon atoms with about 20 moles of ethylene oxide, and mono-lower alkyl ether of diethylene glycol, such as the butyl ether of diethylene glycol, and a major proportion of water, with the pH of the composition being within the range of 3 to 5, preferably 4.0. The composition is found to be an excellent bathroom cleaner, being especially useful for cleaning soap scum and other soil from ceramic tile, porcelain ware, such as bathtubs and sinks, and from other hard surfaces. Tile cleaning is easily effected without erosion of the grout between the tiles, which is often experienced when other acidic cleaners are utilized. Within broader composition aspects of the invention are acidic cleaning compositions containing glutaric acid or a salt thereof, together with an acid or salt thereof, the calcium salt of which is water insoluble. Also within the invention are methods for manufacturing the described liquid detergent compositions and methods of cleaning ceramic tiles and intermediate grout without causing erosion of the grout.

A water-in-oil emulsion at a ratio of 80/20 or less when incorporated into a water absorbing material (such as a polyurethane sponge) will aid in retaining water that may be subsequently added to the absorbing material. The effect is believed due to the increased viscosity of the emulsion when water is added. The effect is particularly useful for improving urine retention of diapers, such as disposable diapers or similar articles.
