A burner apparatus for a fired heating system and a method of burner operation. The burner provides stable operation when burning gas fuels having heating values ranging from low to high and accommodates sudden wide changes in the Wobbe value of the fuel delivered to the burner. The burner apparatus includes a plurality of exterior fuel ejectors and has an exterior notch which extends around the burner wall for receiving and combusting a portion of the gas fuel. At least a portion of the hot combustion product gas produced in the exterior notch is delivered through channels formed in the burner wall to the combustion area at the forward end of the burner. As the Wobbe value of the gas fuel decreases, one or more outer series of addition ejectors can be automatically activated as needed to maintain the amount of heat output desired.

Fuel-flexible burner apparatus and method for fired heaters

A fired heater unit is disclosed having at least one radiant heating section with each of the at least one radiant heating section having a heating element located therein. The unit includes a convection section operatively connected to the at least one radiant heating section, wherein the convection section having at least one vertically oriented convection tube. Each of the at least one convection tube being operatively connected to the at least one radiant heating section. Each of the at least one convection tube includes an inner tube having process fluid flowing therethrough, wherein the process fluid being heated by the at least one radiant heating section, and an outer tube extending along a predetermined portion of the inner tube, wherein the outer tube is spaced from the inner tube to form a flow path therebetween.

Advanced fired heater unit for use in refinery and petro-chemical applications

An improved process for heating furnaces using a burner design that produces very low level of undesirable nitrogen oxides is provided. The process recirculates a large volume of furnaces gases back to the burner where it is mixed with fuel gas in a plurality of recirculation ports prior to combusting with air in a primary combustion zone. Dispersion of the fuel gas in the recirculated furnace gases is believed to result in lower peak flame temperatures and therefore minimizing the formation of the pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides.

Method and apparatus for heating a furnace

A method and apparatus for controlling the operation of a burner apparatus are provided via the flame intensity of combustion reaction mixtures of oxidant and fuel gas.

Burner control

A dual mode pilot burner having a control flame mode of operation and a pilot flame mode of operation, which dual mode pilot burner is suitable for controlling the fuel/air ratio of a main burner when operating in the control flame mode of operation. The dual mode pilot burner includes a burner body having a control flame holder and a pilot flame holder disposed downstream of the control flame holder, a mixing chamber having a fuel gas inlet, an oxidant inlet, and a mixed gas outlet, which mixed gas outlet is in fluid communication with the control flame holder and a fuel gas control valve for controlling a fuel gas flow rate through the fuel gas inlet into the mixing chamber.

Dual mode pilot burner

A process and apparatus for combusting fuel which results in reduction of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxides emissions. Fuel and primary air are preferably premixed and introduced into a combustion chamber. Secondary air is introduced through a plurality of secondary air ports, each preferably shaped as a slot, which are positioned about a venturi nozzle or flame holder disk mounted with respect to a combustion chamber wall. The secondary air flowing through the secondary air ports forms relatively high velocity and momentum secondary air jets that promote rapid mixing of the fuel and primary air mixture into the secondary air flow, such that a combustion flame is established at a partial periphery of the secondary air jets.

Apparatus for low NO.sub.x, rapid mix combustion

A gas fired burner is provided for use in applications such as chemical process furnaces for process heaters in refineries and chemical plants, and the like. The burner is provided with a plurality of fuel gas inlets for enabling manipulation of the flame shape and combustion characteristics of the burner, based upon variation in the distribution of fuel gas between the various fuel gas inlets. A combination pilot and flame holder for a burner, such as may be used in process heaters and furnaces for refineries, chemical plants and the like, is also provided. The pilot is mounted atop a supply pipe for premixed fuel and air, which is positioned in the bore of a burner quarl. The pilot includes a radially outwardly extending flange which is upstream of a surface combustion flame holder for establishing a radially directed surface combustion flame. The present invention also provides a low-emissions burner and pilot system for use in such process heaters and furnaces.

A process and apparatus for combustion of fuel which results in reduction of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxides emissions. Process and apparatus for low NO.sub.x staged-air combustion

A method and apparatus for low NO.sub.x combustion in natural draft combustion chambers comprising staged-air combustion apparatus and process in which a fuel-rich, fuel/air mixture is introduced through a burner into a combustion chamber, forming a fuel-rich primary combustion zone flame. The fuel-rich primary combustion zone flame is attached to a flame guide disposed substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the primary combustion zone flame and extending from behind the burner. The flame guide also provides for removal of heat from the primary combustion zone flame. Secondary combustion air is introduced into the combustion chamber downstream of the burner to complete combustion of the fuel-rich primary combustion zone flame products. Internal recirculation of combustion gases within the combustion chamber into the fuel-rich primary combustion zone flame stabilize the fuel-rich primary combustion zone flame and contribute to emissions reduction.

Low NO.sub.x staged-air combustion chambers

A burner apparatus and method for reducing nitrogen oxides that are formed during combustion of gaseous fuel. Primary gaseous fuel and excess oxidant are premixed to form a fuel/oxidant mixture which is introduced into and combusted within a primary combustion zone. Primary combustion products are introduced into a secondary combustion zone. Secondary gaseous fuel is also introduced into the secondary combustion zone and is preferably mixed with the primary combustion products. The mixture of secondary gaseous fuel and primary combustion products is combusted in a secondary combustion zone. A portion of the secondary combustion products are internally recirculated into the secondary combustion zone. The overall combustion products can be externally recirculated and introduced into the primary combustion zone. A portion of the fuel/oxidant mixture, with or without the recirculated overall combustion products, can be bypassed around the primary combustion zone and introduced into the secondary combustion zone.

A gas-fired burner incorporating an air driven jet pump for mixing air, fuel, and recirculated flue gas is disclosed. The burner is configured for the staged introduction of combustion air to provide a fuel-rich combustion zone and a fuel-lean combustion zone. The burner achieves reduced NO.sub.x emission levels in high temperature applications which use preheated combustion air.
