A dampening system for an offset printing press system uses an intermediate roll between the press system and dampening rolls to create multiple slipping nips. By driving the intermediate roll at a surface velocity greater than the dampening roll speed and less than the press system speed, the speed ratio at each slipping nip may be reduced.

The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for normalizing the zero points for each ink key in an ink fountain. The method and apparatus are useful in an ink fountain using an inker roll and a meter roll which are spaced by a gap, which gap can have possible variations in width. The method is performed when an operator programs the ink fountain controller with a reference point corresponding to the position of the ink key where ink is first transferred from the inker roll to the meter roll - - - the zero points for the ink keys. The reference points for all the ink keys are then normalized within the ink fountain controller, such that an operator display shows a uniform value for the individual reference points for all the ink keys.

In a lithographic printing press for printing on material in sheet or web form, a plate cylinder has a printing form mounted thereon. A gapless blanket cylinder is engageable with the plate cylinder and a tubular, removable blanket having a continuous surface is mounted on the blanket cylinder. A tubular printing blanket (20) has a metal sleeve (42) which is receivable over a blanket cylinder (14) in an offset printing unit (10). The sleeve (42) is expandable diametrically under the influence of pneumatic pressure directed against the inner surface (46) of the sleeve (42), and is movable telescopically over the blanket cylinder (14) when in its expanded condition. The tubular printing blanket (20) has a damping ring (120) for attenuating noise upon expansion of the sleeve (42) under the influence of the pressurized flow of air. The damping ring (120) damps vibrations of the sleeve (42) which are caused by the pressurized flow of air, and which cause noise.
