Method and device for providing speech-to-text encoding and telephony service

A method and system allows multiple and simultaneous use of a pre-paid calling card. A call management system allows for the completion of multiple calls under one pre-paid calling card account number. Depending on the number of concurrent users, a billing system assigns a portion of the total number of available service units to individualized user accounts. The individualized accounts are debited according to the rate charges for each of the calls and are initially assigned an account balance that allows all concurrent users with the same amount of talk time.

A method and an apparatus for providing automated speech-to-text encoding and decoding for hearing-impaired persons. A broadband subscriber terminal interfaces to: (a) a network to convey speech packets thereover, (b) a telephone to convey speech information, and (c) a display device to display textual information of spoken words. A speech buffer in the subscriber terminal receives speech data and a processor decodes and displays textual representations of speech on the display device. A database stores voice and/or speech patterns that are used by a speech analyzer to recognize an incoming caller and to associate a name or characteristic (e.g., male or female) with the incoming call. A tonal and inflection analyzer analyzes speech to add punctuation to the displayed text. A detector, such as a DTMF detector, responds to subscriber inputs to activate/deactivate speech recognition or other functions.

A local communication space (e.g., a local calling area) is defined based at least on a non-geographic factor, such as subscriber preference, a frequency of communication with a given destination, a destination type, and/or the like. The local communication space may be defined by compiling a list of communication spaces and allowing a subscriber to select one or more of the communication spaces as his or her local communication space, and/or by allowing a subscriber to individually input one or more communication destinations. A limit may be placed on the number of communication spaces that may be selected and/or on the number of individual communications destinations that may be input. Subscribers may be billed according to how many communication spaces and/or how many individual communication destinations they select.

System and method for defining a local communication space

A communications system is designed to allow a temporary electronic find transfer from a pre-paid calling card balance to an account of the prepaid calling card issuer to take place when the user of such prepaid calling card number elects to record a spontaneous message for a called party. The transferred fund is either permanently deducted from the prepaid calling card balance when the recorded message is delivered to the called party, or partially or fully refunded to the prepaid calling card balance when the recorded message is deemed undeliverable.

A broadcast stream contains different types of information with the different types identified in the stream. An information processing device receives the broadcast stream and selectively captures (for future playback) only those pieces of information corresponding to one or more preselected types of information. In one embodiment, the broadcast stream is a radio broadcast and the different types are identified in digital sidebands of the radio signals. In other embodiments, the broadcast stream is embedded into audio signals or video signals using luminance or chrominance modulation or other spread spectrum techniques. A user is able to edit a personal profile that is stored in the device and contains the list of preselected types of information. In one embodiment, the device has an interface that allows the user to edit the personal profile, for example, by connecting the device to a personal computer running a profile-editing software program or by communicating with a service bureau that provides the profile-editing function. In this way, each information processing device can be programmed to capture only the subset of information in the broadcast stream in which the user is interested.
