Disclosed herein is marine apparatus comprising a boat including a hull, an outboard motor including a propulsion unit having a rear side and mounted on the hull for pivotal movement relative thereto between a trimmed-in position, a tilted-up position, and a trimmed-out position between the trimmed-in position and the tilted-up position, a cover which extends above the propulsion unit and which is mounted on the hull for movement relative thereto about an axis located forwardly of the rear side of the propulsion unit and between a lower position wherein the cover affords movement of the propulsion unit between the trimmed-in position and the trimmed-out position, and an upper position wherein the cover affords movement of the propulsion unit to the tilted-up position, and engaging surfaces on the motor and on the cover for moving the cover from the lower position to the upper position in response to movement of the propulsion unit from the trimmed-out position to the tilted-up position.

Disclosed herein is a bracket assembly for supporting an outboard motor from a boat transom so as to permit tilting of the outboard motor substantially wholly in the area aft of the transom, which bracket assembly comprises a transom bracket adapted to be fixed to the boat transom and including an upper end having a bore which is horizontal when the transom bracket is boat mounted, a tilt pin extending in the bore, and a tilt member including an upper end having a bore receiving the tilt member and a lower part including a generally vertically extending outboard motor mounting member located substantially below the tilt pin and substantially rearwardly of the tilt pin.

Disclosed herein is a marine propulsion device incorporating a two-speed transmission including a first drive gear which is mounted for common rotation with an input shaft drivingly connected to an engine and which meshes with a first driven gear mounted for rotation coaxially with a drive shaft drivingly connected to the propeller shaft and further including a second drive gear which is mounted for rotation coaxially with and independently of the input shaft and which meshes with a second driven gear mounted for common rotation with the drive shaft. The drive shaft is drivingly connected to the first driven gear by a one-way, overrunning clutch and is driven by the input shaft through the first drive and driven gears at low and moderate engine speeds. At high engine speeds, a second clutch is actuated to drivingly connect the second drive gear to the input shaft and the drive shaft thereafter is driven by the input shaft through the second drive and driven gears which have a gear ratio greater than the gear ratio of the first drive and driven gears. The second clutch preferably is a centrifugal clutch which is arranged to provide automatic shifting between the first drive and driven gears and the second drive and driven gears at a predetermined engine speed.
