The invention provides novel blends and processes for producing such blends which include a polyamide, an olefinic acid copolymer or salt thereof, and a maleated ethylene/propylene rubber, wherein such novel blends may be processed by conventional extrusion and molding techniques, do not require a separate curing step or procedure in the overall production process, and which produces articles which have some physical characteristics similar to those exhibited by thermoplastic elastomers. The inventive compositions exhibit feature excellent resistance to zinc chloride solutions and are formable in a single melt blending step.

Disclosed are compositions and process for the improving the rate or crystallization of polyamide containing compositions which comprise two polyamides having dissimilar melting temperatures, said process comprising the steps of heating the two polyamides to a temperature which is above the melting point of the polyamide having the lower melting temperature but below the melting temperature of the polyamide having the higher melting temperature, as well compositions made in accordance with the process. Compositions comprising polyamides, polyolefins and ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymers useful as compatibilizers, related processes and articles made therefrom. A composition comprising from 50 to 99.4 percent by weight of a polyolefin, from 0.5 to 50 percent by weight of a polyamide, from 0.1 to 10 percent by weight of an ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer comprising from 50 to 95 mole percent ethylene groups and from 5 to 50 mole percent vinyl alcohol groups and less than 5.0 mole percent and preferably less than 2.0 mole percent unhydrolyzed vinyl acetate groups.

Blends of polyamide, polyolefin, and ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer

Compositions comprising polyamides, polyolefins and ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymers useful as compatabilizers, related processes and articles made therefrom. A composition comprising from 50 to 99.4 percent by weight of a polyolefin, from 0.5 to 50 percent by weight of polyamide, from 0.1 to 10 percent by weight of an ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer comprising from 50 to 95 mole percent ethylene groups and from 5 to 59 mole percent vinyl alcohol groups and less than 5.0 mole percent and preferably less than 2.0 mole percent unhydrolyzed vinyl acetate groups.

The present invention is a polyamide composition with high impact strength which is retained at low temperatures. The composition consists of from 0.5 to 95 percent by weight of at least one amine terminated polyamide. The amine terminated polyamide comprises from 3 to 97 mole percent of the polyamide acid molecules having amine groups as at least two end groups of the polyamide acid molecule. The composition further contains 3 to 99.5 percent by weight of a polyamide having at least 50 mole percent of its end groups as acid groups or capped groups. The composition further has from 2 to 50 percent, and preferably 15 to 30 percent based on the total weight of the polymer of a reactive polymer. The reactive copolymer is based on a copolymer of ethylene and an .alpha.-olefin having 3 to 8 carbon atoms. This copolymer is identified as the 'ethylene copolymer'. The reactive copolymer has a reactive moiety, preferably grafted to the ethylene copolymer, which is preferably an ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or derivative thereof. There are at least an average two reactive groups per molecule of copolymer.

Polyamide compositions with high impact strength at low temperatures

A salt resistant composition comprising a polyamide selected from the group consisting of: polyepsiloncaprolactam, polyhexamethylene adipamide; copolymers of caprolactam, hexamethylene diamine, and adipic acid; and mixtures thereof. The composition contains from 2 to 30 percent, and preferably 4 to 30 percent based on the weight of the polyamide of a water insoluble plasticizer, and a copolymer of an alpha-olefin and an unsaturated carboxylic acid and derivatives thereof. The plasticizer has been found to enable the polyamide composition to maintain its flexibility upon exposure to a variety of salts. Preferred plasticizers include lauryl lactam and sulfonamides. Preferred are sulfonamide type plasticizers such as n-ethyl; o,p-toluenesulfonamide; o,p-toluene sulfonamide, and toluene sulfonamide formaldehyde resin. The invention includes articles made from the composition.

Salt resistant polyamide composition

A salt resistant composition comprising a polyamide selected from the group consisting of: polyepsiloncaprolactam, polyhexamethylene adipamide; copolymers of caprolactam, hexamethylene diamine, and adipic acid; and mixtures thereof. The composition contains from 2 to 30 percent, and preferrably 4 to 30 percent based on the weight of the polyamide of a water insoluble plasticizer, and a copolymer of an alpha-olefin and an unsaturated carboxylic acid and derivatives thereof. The plasticizer has been found to enable the polyamide composition to maintain its flexibility upon exposure to a variety of salts. Preferred plasticizers include lauryl lactam and sulfonamides. Preferred are sulfonamide type plasticizers such as n-ethyl o,p-toluenesulfonamide; o,p-toluene sulfonamide, and toluene sulfonamide formaldehyde resin. The invention includes articles made from the composition.

Impact modified polyester blends are provided which are blends of a saturated polyester such as poly(ethylene terephthalate) and an impact modifying amount of a combination of a core-shell polymer and a copolymer of an alpha-olefin having 2 to 8 carbon atoms and a monomer selected from an unsaturated carboxylic acid having 3 to 8 carbon atoms and salts and anhydrides thereof.

Impact modified polyester blends

The present invention is a flame retardant composition comprising from 5 to 20 weight percent of a homopolymer of a monomer having the formula: ##STR1## wherein n=0 or 1, X is bromine or chlorine and R is hydrogen or methyl. The polymer has a molecular weight between 1.times.10.sup.3 and 10.times.10.sup.6, and preferably 5.times.10.sup.3 to 5.times.10.sup.6. The molecular weight is determined by gel permeation chromotography in tetrahydrofuran. The composition contains from 80 to 95 weight percent of a polyamide having an excess of polymer chain ends terminated with amine groups. There can be from 0 to 10, preferably 1 to 10, and more preferably 2 to 6 weight percent of antimony oxide. Optionally, the composition can contain an impact modifier and/or a filler.

Flame retardant amine terminated polyamide composition

The present invention is a flame retardant composition comprising from 5 to 20 weight percent of a homopolymer of a monomer having the formula: ##STR1## wherein n=0 or 1, X is bromine or chlorine and R is hydrogen or methyl. The polymer has a molecular weight between 1.times.10.sup.3 and 10.times.10.sup.6, and preferably 5.times.10.sup.3 to 5.times.10.sup.6. Flame retardant polyamide composition

A composition of matter comprising a polyamide, preferably polyepsiloncaprolactam, and from 1 to 65 percent of an ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer. The composition is useful for making moldings, films, and fibers.

Certain metal compounds such as antimony oxide and magnesium oxide are used to enhance the notched Izod impact resistance of molded objects made from selected polyamide copolymer compositions comprised of polyepsiloncaprolactam (nylon-6) or polyhexamethyleneadipamide (nylon-66) and preferably ethylene/ethyl acrylate and ethylene/acrylic acid copolymers.
