A responder for electronic article surveillance apparatus is made by subjecting a plurality of magnetizable elements to heating in the presence of a magnetic field and maintaining the field at a different intensity for each element as it is cooled to provide different magnetic characteristics so that when the responder is subjected to a cyclically varying magnetic interrogation field its several elements produce spaced apart pulses in each cycle.

An amorphous alloy including iron, carbon and boron characterized by exceptional magnetic induction properties at room temperature, rendering it particularly suitable for use as the core of a power transformer. The alloy includes 83 to 90 atomic % iron, 2 to 13 atomic % carbon, and 4 to 15 atomic % boron, the total boron and carbon content ranging from 10 to 17 atomic %. If desired, up to 10% of the iron can be replaced by cobalt or nickel, while up to 2% of the carbon can be replaced by silicon or germanium.

The magnetic properties of amorphous metallic alloys are improved significantly by application of stress to the alloy material. Selected alloys in ribbon form are subjected to controlled tensile stress, whereupon resulting magnetic properties are superior to corresponding conventional crystalline materials. So stressed, the amorphous alloy material may be applied to advantage as transformer cores, magnetic delay lines, magnetic computer cores, and the like.
