Provided is a process for the preparation of glutaraldehyde. The process comprises reacting an alkoxydihydropyran with water in the presence of an acidic catalyst. The alcohol by-product distilled from the reaction mixture is subjected to a heterogeneous catalyst that is located external to the distillation column used for distilling the alcohol, thereby increasing glutaraldehyde yield and decreasing the level of alkoxydihydropyran contamination in the alcohol.

A method for cleaning the interior surfaces of a receptacle holding a body of water comprises providing the receptacle, providing an aqueous solution having from about 1 to about 100 weight percent of an aliphatic amine or salt thereof, adding the aqueous solution to the water within the receptacle. The aliphatic amine is selected from among the following: CH,CH,CH,CH,CH,CH,CH,CH,CH,CH,NH,, R&mdash;O&mdash;(CH,),NH,and R&mdash;O&mdash;(CH,),NH(CH,),NH,wherein R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon having from 8 to 10 carbon atoms, R optionally having additional ether linkages such as C,H,&mdash;(O&mdash;CH,CH,),&prime;, and wherein n is an integer from 8 to 10 and n&prime; is an integer from 1 to 5. When the aqueous solution is added to the water, flocculus or precipitants are substantially not formed in the water proximate to the point of addition. Also disclosed is a swimming pool having a liner and a body of water within the liner. The body of water has from about 1 to about 100 parts per million by weight of an aliphatic amine or salt thereof.

The instant invention is directed to a process for removing odor from alkylthioethylamine reaction product mixtures having said odor. The process comprises first contacting an alkylthioethanamine reaction product mixture with a neutralizing amount of aqueous alkali metal hydroxide to form an organic phase and an aqueous phase. Next, the organic phase is separated from the aqueous phase. After separation, a sufficient amount of an aqueous hydrohalic acid is added to the organic phase to form an alkylthioethanamine hydrohalide which has reduced odor.
