A data rate management system that provides quality of service at the fine granularity of applications in the home network and home automation environment is provided. An application can be associated with a dynamic traffic flow, a physical port, a logical interface, or a host computer or device. Virtual queueing is applied to isolate and protect individual applications. Comprehensive rate management algorithms are developed to offer the bandwidth guarantee for the applications individually. The data rate management system includes a traffic classifier, virtual queueing, and a rate manager. The traffic classifier can statically or dynamically identify an application. The identified application is stored in a dedicated virtual queue. The rate manager schedules the packet transmission among virtual queues using the application-based traffic profiles.

Communication traffic processing architectures and methods are disclosed. Processing load on main Central Processing Units (CPUs) can be alleviated by offloading data processing tasks to separate hardware. In one implementation, a processing architecture includes a main processor configured to execute a first portion of a driver software to perform protocol control and management task associated with control or management packets in a packet-based protocol according to which packets are received from a device, an offload processor configured to execute a second portion of the driver software to perform data processing task for data packets received according to the packet-based protocol, an interface to enable communication with the device, and an interconnect coupled to the main processor, to the offload subsystem, and to the interface.

A stack including a crystallographic orientation interlayer, a magnetic zero layer disposed on the interlayer, and a magnetic recording layer disposed on the magnetic zero layer is disclosed. The magnetic zero layer is non-magnetic or has a saturation magnetic flux density (B) less than about 100 emu/cc. The magnetic zero layer and the magnetic layer include grains surrounded by a non-magnetic segregant. The magnetic zero layer provides a coherent interface between the interlayer and the magnetic layer with a lattice mismatch less than about 4%.

An apparatus and method are provided for improving perpendicular magnetic recording media. The present invention provides media, and a method of fabricating media in a cost-effective manner, with a reduced ruthenium (Ru) content interlayer structure, while meeting media performance requirements. A perpendicular magnetic recording medium is provided comprising a non-magnetic substrate having a surface, and a layer stack situated on the substrate surface. The layer stack comprises, in overlying sequence from the substrate surface a magnetically soft underlayer; an amorphous or crystalline, non-magnetic seed layer; an interlayer structure for crystallographically orienting a layer of a perpendicular magnetic recording material situated on the underlayer; and at least one crystallographically oriented, magnetically hard, perpendicular magnetic recording layer situated on the interlayer structure. The interlayer structure is a stacked structure comprising, in overlying sequence: a chromium alloy situated on the seed layer; and an upper interlayer situated on the chromium alloy.

Aspects are directed to recording media with enhanced magnetic properties for improved writability. Examples can be included or related to methods, systems and components that allow for improved writability while reducing defects so as to obtain uniform magnetic properties such as uniformly high anisotropy and narrow switching field distribution. Some examples include a recording medium with an exchange tuning layer inserted between the hard layer and the soft, semi-soft or thin semi-hard layer so as to maximize the writability improvement of the media. Preferably, the exchange tuning layer is granular and reduces or optimizes the vertical coupling between the hard layer and the soft, semi-soft or semi-hard layer of a magnetic recording or storing device.

Systems and methods for performing protection switching in a passive optical network are provided. When a fiber cut is detected, control and management plane applications are not immediately informed. A rapid re-registration procedure is instigated upon detection of a fiber cut event. This allows multiple optical network units to re-register quickly without restarting control and management applications.

A perpendicular magnetic recording medium comprises a layer stack formed over a surface of a non-magnetic substrate, and comprising, in overlying sequence from the surface: a magnetically soft underlayer; an interlayer structure for crystallographically orienting a layer of a perpendicular magnetic recording material formed thereon; and at least one crystallographically oriented, magnetically hard, perpendicular magnetic recording layer on the interlayer structure; wherein the interlayer structure is a triple-layer stacked structure comprising: a first interlayer of a first non-magnetic material proximal the magnetically soft underlayer and containing Ru; a second interlayer of a second non-magnetic material in overlying contact with the first interlayer and not containing Ru; and a third interlayer of a third non-magnetic material in overlying contact with the second interlayer and containing Ru.

A method and integrated hardware system for multicast transmission shaping in EPONs which employs a selective multicast algorithm that significantly reduces the complexity of traffic shaping for multicast traffic. Unlike prior art methods, my method exploits the broadcasting nature of the downstream point-to-multipoint access system including EPONs. Operationally, the method transforms a multicast traffic shaping problem into a unicast traffic shaping problem by selecting a multicast subscriber and subsequently treating packets addressed to that selected multicast subscriber as unicast. Advantageously, these packets are still available to other members of the multicast group. And since these packets are treated as unicast from the perspective of traffic shaping, my inventive method significantly reduces traffic shaping complexity in multicast environment.

Forwarding loop prevention apparatus and methods are provided. After a communication traffic block such as a packet is received, a determination is made as to whether the packet is to be broadcasted to a number of communication devices. If the packet is to be broadcasted, the packet is modified to include an indication that the packet is reflected, and the packet is broadcasted. A device that receives the broadcasted packet determines whether it is reflected and whether the identifier is associated with the device. If the packet is reflected and the identifier is associated with the device, the device discards the packet. Otherwise it forwards the packet. Forwarding loops may instead be avoided without modifying packets, based on an amount of time elapsed between sending and receiving a packet.

A router identifies in a data packet an address of a network device. An algorithm determines that the address and a first prefix in a tree data structure match up to a first mask length of the first prefix. The algorithm maintains the first prefix in a temporary storage location if there is a match, and determines whether the address and a second prefix in the tree data structure match up to a second mask length of the second prefix, wherein an external node of the second prefix is linked below an external node of the first prefix, and wherein the second mask length is longer than the first mask length. The algorithm maintains the second prefix as a better match of the address, if the address and the second prefix match up to the mask length of the second prefix.
