Carbon nanotube-based devices made by electrolytic deposition and applications thereof are provided. In a preferred embodiment, the present invention provides a device comprising at least one array of active carbon nanotube junctions deposited on at least one microelectronic substrate. In another preferred embodiment, the present invention provides a device comprising a substrate, at least one pair of electrodes disposed on the substrate, wherein one or more pairs of electrodes are connected to a power source, and a bundle of carbon nanotubes disposed between the at least one pair of electrodes wherein the bundle of carbon nanotubes consist essentially of semiconductive carbon nanotubes. In another preferred embodiment, a semiconducting device formed by electrodeposition of carbon nanotubes between two electrodes is provided. The invention also provides preferred methods of forming a semiconductive device by applying a bias voltage to a carbon nanotube rope. The plurality of metallic single-wall carbon nanotubes are removed (e.g., by application of bias voltage) in an amount sufficient to form the semiconducting device. The devices of the invention include, but not limited to, chemical or biological sensors, carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (CNFETs), tunnel junctions, Schottky junctions, and multi-dimensional nanotube arrays.

Carbon nanotube-based electronic devices made by electrolytic deposition and applications thereof

This invention is a steerable thermoacoustic array system for directing information between an object that is above the surface of the water and a sound detector that is beneath the surface of the water. The foregoing system comprises a laser or particle accelerator that is located above the water's surface. The laser or particle beam produces a light beam or particle beam which contains information that is moved along a small layer of water at the air/water interface at a speed equal to the speed of sound in water divided by the steering angle of the laser so that the light beam or particle beam is absorbed by the water causing the water to expand and produce a series of acousitic Braves that constructively interfere with each other and travel towards the sound detector.

Steerable thermoacoustic array

This invention is a thermoacoustic system for communicating between an airborne or spaceborne vehicle and a sound detector that is located aboard an object beneath the surface of the water. The foregoing system comprises a laser or particle accelerator that is located aboard an airborne or spaceborne vehicle. The laser produces a light beam whose amplitude is subsequently modulated or whose pulses are varied in time. A particle accelerator would produce a pulsed particle beam that varies in time. These modulated or varied pulses are focused or deflected to a small layer of water at the air/water interface so that the beam will be absorbed by the water causing the water to produce an acoustic signal that will propagate to the sound detector.

Thermoacoustic communications system

A sensitive, noise-free ellipsometer measures depolarization of an incident beam by forming from the reference and signal components of the incident beam a signal component polarized in one direction, and a frequency shifted local oscillator component polarized in the same direction, with these latter components being optically heterodyned at a detector. In the formation of the local oscillator component, the reference component of the incident beam is shifted in frequency from that of the signal component of the incident beam and rotated 90.degree. from its original orientation so that optical heterodyning can take place. This is accomplished by passing the incident beam through a shear-wave, traveling wave acoustic modulator which forms local oscillator and signal beams, each having rotated and frequency shifted components, and unrotated and unshifted components. Thereafter, all the light from the modulator is incident on a polarization analyzer which selects for heterodyning the unshifted, unrotated components of the signal beam and shifted, rotated components of the local oscillator beam. The shear wave action of the modulator operates to provide the rotation, while the traveling wave action of the modulator assures that the frequency shift is in only one direction.
