Methods and apparatus to capture images using docked handheld imagers are disclosed herein. An example imaging system includes a handheld imager configured to capture images; a mount configured to selectively receive the handheld imager; and a button disposed in the mount, the button configured to, when the handheld imager is disposed in the mount and the button actuated, direct the handheld imager to capture an image and, when the handheld imager is not disposed in the mount and the button is actuated, direct the handheld imager to perform a function other than capture of an image.

Methods and apparatus to image objects using docked handheld imagers

A printed code associated with a product is illuminated with light having a first lighting characteristic, and is readable in a default mode of an imaging reader. An electronic code displayed on a mobile communication device is readable in another mode of the reader, with a different second lighting characteristic that is designed to minimize specular reflection from a screen of the device. When the presence of the device in close proximity to the reader is detected, the reader is automatically configured to switch from the default mode to the other mode to enable the electronic code to be read.

A visible target having a predetermined target size is fixed on a document capture stand. A visible aiming light beam is directed along an aiming axis away from an imaging reader. The beam has a beam size in cross-section that changes along the aiming axis. The reader is moved relative to the stand along the aiming axis until the beam size visually matches the target size at a predetermined distance between the reader and the stand. An image of a document supported by the stand is captured at the predetermined distance.
