An air gap armature winding is provided for large generators. The armature winding preferably consists of conductors closely packed together in the air gap so that the maximum cross section of conductors can be used, and several radial layers of such conductors may be used. In order to permit forming the end portions of the winding conductors to the usual diamond or an equivalent) configuration, certain of the conductors lying at circumferentially spaced intervals are displaced radially in the end portions to make from for end turns to be formed. The displaced conductors are disposed so that the radial thickness of the end turn portions is not unduly increased.

Dynamoelectric machine with air gap armature winding

A multiple plane spoke structure for supporting a superconducting rotor assembly of a dynamoelectric machine. A plurality of generally radially extending support spokes interconnect an ambient temperature rotor portion with a cryogenic temperature rotor portion. The spokes are secured in tension between the two rotor portions and are displaced one from another along the axial length of the rotor member. The spokes are preferably grouped together in sets of at least two each with at least one of the spokes being angularly displaced with respect to the remaining spokes. The proper placement of these groups of spokes is determined by comparing the maximum deflection of the rotor assembly at the operational frequency to the maximum allowable deflection which can be tolerated under steady state conditions. Each spoke projects through radial openings in the core of the field winding structure. These openings are preferably located in the pole portions of the rotor core structure which lie intermediate of next adjacent field winding groups.

Multiple plane spoke structure for a superconducting dynamoelectric

A unitary supporting structure for enclosing the superconducting field assembly of a dynamoelectric machine has a drive shaft portion for transmitting torque from a prime mover to the field assembly and a tubular portion integrally formed with the drive shaft portion. The tubular portion has a circumferentially extending outer wall which in combination with the drive shaft portion defines a chamber having a closed end with which the drive shaft portion is integrally formed and an opened end for receiving the field assembly. The field assembly is secured to the unitary supporting structure within the chamber in a cantilever mounting arrangement. The chamber is closed by means of an end plate to which a support shaft is affixed. The support shaft cooperates with the drive shaft portion to support the unitary structure for rotational movement within an annular stator member.

Unitary supporting structure for superconducting field assembly

A composite tubular structure for shielding and supporting the superconducting field assembly of the rotor of a dynamoelectric machine. A plurality of elongated hollow metal cylinders are disposed one within another and are metallurgically bonded together by the high energy impact produced by the detonation of an explosive charge. The metallurgical weld produced thereby is formed substantially uniformly across the metal-to-metal interface of next adjacent cylinders. In a preferred embodiment of this invention, the composite tubular structure comprises an outer cylinder formed of a non-ferromagnetic metal having high mechanical strength and ductility, and an inner cylinder formed of a non-ferromagnetic metal having an electrical conductivity which is high as compared with the electrical conductivity of the outer cylinder. When bonded by explosive fabrication, the two cylinders perform mechanically as a single structure, the inner cylindrical portion providing electromagnetic shielding and the outer cylindrical portion providing structural support.
