Insulation materials suited to high temperature applications, such as the insulation of furnaces, are formed from a mixture of pitch carbon fibers, such as isotropic pitch carbon fibers, and a binder comprising a solution of sugar in water. The sugar solution is preferably at a concentration of from 20-60% sucrose to yield a low density material having high flexural strength and low thermal conductivity when carbonized to a temperature of about 1800&#xb0; C.

Isotropic pitch-based materials for thermal insulation

A method of sealing the surfaces of porous carbon and graphite articles by impregnation at ambient pressure using a treating solution comprising a high temperature polymerizable liquid resin. The liquid treating solution, when upon the surface of the article, is of sufficiently low viscosity to allow infiltration of the treating solution into the pores of the surface of the article. The treated article then undergoes a controlled heating cycle, which cures the infiltrated resin in situ. Subsequent treatments and surface conditioning techniques are utilized to produce a thin, level, liquid and gas impervious coating on the surfaces of the article.

Topical treatment for sealing carbon and graphite surfaces

A carbonaceous cement for joining carbon and graphite shapes contains carbonaceous particles, a furan and catalyst, and a thermosetting resin resistant to high temperatures when curved. The cement forms bonds of superior strength at high temperatures encountered during curing of high-performance composites.

High strength carbonaceous cement

A binder system for use in the production of graphite electrodes comprises pitch and a minor proportion of a polynitro-substituted aromatic compound containing an electron releasing substituent. A pitch/2,4-dinitroaniline blend results in graphite electrodes having a 14 percent improvement in coking value and a 52 percent improvement in flexural strength.

High coking value binder system

A method for treating a carbon or graphite electrode comprising contacting the electrode with a phosphate-containing compound and a halide-containing compound. The treated electrode is oxidation retarded and inhibits non-conductive film formation between the electrode and a copper electrode holder, thereby inhibiting arcing between the electrode and the electrode holder when used in an electric arc furnace.
