A map database stores data describing a set of connected roadways, each having one or more lanes. A coverage system selects lanes from the map database along which AVs can stop, such as parking lanes. The coverage system generates buffer regions for each of the stopping lanes, where each buffer region includes an area within a given distance of the respective lane. The coverage system combines the buffer regions to generate a coverage area, and provides a display of the coverage area overlayed over a map of roads corresponding to the coverage area.

Service disruption prevention through monitoring dynamic geofencing is disclosed. The present disclosure seeks to prevent (or drastically reduce the probability) mass vehicle recovery events due to fragile portions of the map. Tooling is used to actively monitor chokepoints and new avoidance areas. Comprised by the operational design domain (ODD), geofences are actively changed in response to the state of the chokepoints and avoidance areas. Varying states can be assigned to a plurality of geofences within the ODD, for example, if a geofence reaches a critical state, one or more areas can be cut off from the ODD.

In some aspects, a method of the disclosed technology includes steps for transmitting an autonomous vehicle (AV) ride request to an AV dispatch service, receiving a ride confirmation indicating that an AV has been dispatched to a rider associated with the mobile device, detecting arrival of the AV at a pick-up location associated with the rider, and initializing augment reality (AR) guidance on the mobile device, wherein the AR guidance is configured to provide the rider with navigation information to facilitate pick-up by the AV. The subject disclosure relates to ways to improve route duration calculations e.g., estimated time of arrival (ETA) approximations, by taking consideration of reroute probabilities along a given vehicle path. In some aspects, the disclosed technology encompasses a process including steps for identifying a route between a first destination to a second destination, determining a reroute likelihood associated with at least one AV maneuver along the route, and calculating an estimated time of arrival (ETA) based on the reroute likelihood associated with at least one AV maneuver. The subject disclosure relates to techniques for providing augmented reality (AR) navigation assistance to users of an autonomous vehicle (AV) ride hailing service. In some aspects, a process for implementing the disclosed technology can include steps for navigating an autonomous vehicle (AV) along a route terminating in a drop-off location specified by a rider of the AV, detecting an arrival of the AV at the drop-off location, sending location information of the AV to a mobile device associated with the rider, and initializing augment reality (AR) guidance for the rider on the mobile device, wherein the AR guidance is configured to provide the rider with navigation information pertaining to the drop-off location.
