Catheter for use in biliary procedures, including a shaft having a proximal end and a distal end. A guidewire lumen is carried by the shaft extending from a location proximal the distal end of the shaft to a location proximate the distal end of the shaft. An opening is included for accessing the guidewire lumen from a location exterior the catheter shaft located distal the proximal end of the shaft. The guidewire lumen may be formed integral the catheter shaft. The catheter may be used in rapid exchange catheter procedures. The catheter may further include a port and channel design including a first opening into the guidewire lumen located proximal the distal end of the shaft, a second opening located proximal the first opening, and a channel extending longitudinally between the first opening and the second opening.

Implements, particularly medical instruments, formed at least in part of elongated polymer members, exhibit high torque fidelity after processing with tension, heat, and twisting. The processing orients the polymer in generally helical paths so that torque imposed at the proximal end can be transmitted to the distal end without substantial whipping, even if the implement follows a long and tortuous pathway. Applications include medical guidewires, catheters, and driveshafts.

Single operator exchange billiary catheter

In an aspect, the invention relates to an instrument for obtaining tissue samples from a site deep within the body. The instrument has an elongated proximal portion that is constructed to follow a long, torturous path to the site and has a distal end constructed to sever and remove a tissue sample from the body, including tissue specimens, polyps or the like. The improvement includes that the instrument is constructed to take multiple biopsy samples without being withdrawn from the body. The instrument includes a tissue sample retractor. The retractor is axially movable between an extended tissue-engaging position and a retracted position. There is an open passage into which the retractor moves when moving from the extended to the retracted position. The retractor has a distal end portion constructed to engage tissue and apply axial transporting force thereto while moving from the extended to the retracted position. The retractor is constructed to be advanced and retracted repeatedly to accumulate a series of samples in the instrument.

A channel extending longitudinally between a first end and a second end is included for accessing the guide wire lumen from a location exterior the catheter shaft located distal the proximal end of the shaft. The catheter may be used in rapid exchange catheter procedures. The channel may be U-shaped, containing the guide wire yet allowing radial removal of the guide wire from the channel. The catheter may also be part of a device including an endoscope exchange sheath for constraining guide wire movement to the catheter channel while inside a large endoscope working channel.

A catheter for the administration of a liquid agent at a target site includes a catheter tube, a handle and a conduit that extends through a central volume formed in the handle. The catheter includes a guidewire lumen and two parallel liquid agent transfer lumens. The conduit seals into the proximal end of the guidewire lumen and to the handle at a first entry port and spans the central volume. The tube therefore prevents the transfer of any liquid agent into the guidewire lumen and provides a passageway for enabling the catheter to transfer over the guidewire. With two transfer lumens the catheter tube provides a maximum transfer flow rate while maintaining the ability of the catheter to resist kinking and bending.
