In one example, a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) may include an active region to produce light at a wavelength, an emission surface to emit the light at the wavelength, a first oxide region spaced apart from the active region by a distance of at least a half-wavelength of the wavelength, a first oxide aperture in the first oxide region, a second oxide region between the first oxide region and the second oxide region, and a second oxide aperture in the second oxide region. The emitted light may have a divergence angle that is based on the respective positions and thicknesses of the first oxide region and the second oxide region.

Input optical signals propagate toward first optical diffuser, resulting in first-forward-directed optical signals that propagate toward a second optical diffuser, in turn resulting in second forward-directed optical signals. The second forward-directed optical signals collectively form the optical output of an illumination source that appears to emanate from an enlarged extended source and exhibits reduced speckle. The illumination source can include multiple laser sources formed on or attached to the first optical diffuser.

Optical apparatus for wide-angle illumination

In an embodiment, a delay line interferometer (DLI) multiplexer (MUX) includes a first stage and a second stage. The first stage includes a first DLI and a second DLI. The first DLI includes a first left input, a first right input, and a first output and has a free spectral range (FSR) that is about four times a nominal channel spacing. The second DLI includes a second left input, a second right input, and a second output and has an FSR that is about four times the nominal channel spacing. The second stage is coupled to the first stage and includes a third DLI. The third DLI includes a third left input optically coupled to the first output, a third right input optically coupled to the second output, and a third output. An FSR of the third DLI is about two times the nominal channel spacing.

One embodiment relates to an optical displacement sensor for sensing movement of a data input device across a surface by determining displacement of optical features in a succession of frames. The sensor includes at least an illuminator, telecentric imaging optics on the object (scattering surface) side, and an array of photosensitive elements. The illuminator is configured to illuminate a portion of the surface. The telecentric imaging optics is configured to image the optical features emanating from the illuminated portion of the surface, and the array of photosensitive elements is configured to detect intensity data relating to the optical features imaged by the telecentric imaging optics. Other embodiments are also disclosed.

Optical positioning device using telecentric imaging

Semiconductor lasers are aged to identify weak or flawed devices, resulting in improved reliability of the remaining devices. The lasers can be aged using a high-power optical burn-in that includes providing a high drive current to the lasers for a period of time, and maintaining the ambient temperature of the lasers at a low temperature. After the high-power optical burn-in, the output of the lasers can be measured to determine if the lasers are operating within specifications. Those that are not can be discarded, while those that are can be further aged using a high-temperature thermal burn-in that includes providing a drive current to the lasers while maintaining the ambient temperature of the lasers at a high-temperature.

An integrated device includes one or more device drivers and a micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) structure monolithically coupled to the one or more device drivers. The one or more device drivers are configured to process received control signals and to transmit the processed control signals to the MEMS structure. Methods of fabricating integrated devices are also disclosed.

One embodiment relates to an optical displacement sensor for sensing relative movement between a data input device and a surface by determining displacement of optical features in a succession of frames. The sensor includes an illuminator and a detector. The illuminator has a light source and illumination optics to illuminate a portion of the surface with a planar phase-front. The detector has a plurality of photosensitive elements and imaging optics. The illuminator and the detector are configured such that the illuminated portion of the surface is less than fifty percent larger than a field of view of the photosensitive elements of the detector. One embodiment described relates to an optical displacement sensor for sensing movement of a data input device across a surface by detecting displacement of optical features in a succession of images of the surface. The sensor includes a detector having an array including a number (N) of sets of photosensitive elements, each set having a number (M) of photosensitive elements, where M is greater than two and not equal to four. Signals from each of the photosensitive elements in a set are electrically coupled or combined with corresponding photosensitive elements in other sets to produce a total of M independent group signals from M interlaced groups of photosensitive elements. One embodiment relates to an optical displacement sensor for sensing transverse displacement of a data input device relative to a surface by determining displacement of optical features in a succession of frames. The sensor includes at least a coherent light source, illumination optics to illuminate a portion of the surface, imaging optics, and a first array of photosensitive elements having a periodic distance. The illuminator and the detector are configured to produce on the first array of photosensitive elements an intensity pattern of light reflected from the illuminated portion of the surface. The intensity pattern comprises a plurality of speckles having an average speckle diameter which is between one half and two times the periodic distance of the array.

In one embodiment, an imaging apparatus includes a light modulator array having modulators arranged in a loosely-packed configuration. For example, the modulators may be arranged in columns at a first pitch, and the columns may be spaced at a second pitch. The optically active areas of the modulators may form a repeating pattern including a hexagonal pattern, a rectangular pattern, or a diamond pattern. In one embodiment, the modulators are diffractive light modulators.

A device comprising a light modulator including a plurality of elements wherein each element is selectively operable such that the plurality of elements are dynamically configurable to combine selected ones of a plurality of grating periods such that selected portions of an incident light are directed into one or more distinct modes wherein each distinct mode corresponds to a grating period. The device can be used as a 1&#xd7;N wavelength selective switch and equalizer where N is the number of output channels.
