A compatible high-definition television system may be achieved by dividing a standard picture element into four arranged sub-picture elements arranged in a parallelo-grammatic fashion. In the system a sum signal which is the sum of the four sub-picture elements is transmitted as a standard luminance signal. Further, the system includes means for computing three difference signals and transmitting these in separate channels. The first difference signal is the horizontal difference signal, the second is a vertical difference signal and the third is the diagonal difference signal. These four signals are an orthogonal set of 2.times.2 Hadamard basis functions. To reconstruct the high-definition television sub-picture element values, the three difference signals and the sum signal are summed to determine the orthogonal sub-pixel values. The system uses simple hardware and does not require a frame buffer.

Compatible high-definition television system utilizing Hadamard basis

A television arrangement generates signals from independent pairs of adjacent lines. The signals are separately summed and differenced to produce S and .DELTA. signals. The S signal is representative of the luminance of a scan between the original scans, and the .DELTA. represents vertical resolution. The signals are transmitted to a monitor for generating a high-vertical-resolution picture. Where the display is a color TV receiver, the .DELTA. signal may be buried within the chroma channel by frequency interleaving with the .DELTA. signal occuring only in locations representing high-frequency vertical information. The buried .DELTA. signal is invisible on a conventional receiver. Other independent data may be coupled through the chroma channel by frequency interleaving.

Compatible television system with increased vertical resolution

A sampled color video signal is recorded in component form in a plurality of channels. The form of the signal is chosen so that if only one channel is available due to dropouts upon playback, then at least approximate separation into color components is possible, and if all channels are available, then full color separation is possible. The form is also chosen to provide a dynamic range that fits the transmission channel.

Compatible component digital system

A raster registration system for a television camera is provided in which the positions of the peak amplitude of two or more raster related video signals derived from scanning a common reference are detected and compared so as to generate a control signal proportional to any misregistration of the rasters. The control signal is utilized to develop raster correction signals for reducing the misregistration of the rasters.
