Methods and systems for interfacing packet and circuit telephony operations in a distributed telecommunications network. Initially, one or more digital circuit switches can be associated with the distributed telecommunications network. Thereafter, one or more network transmission elements within the distributed telecommunications network can be connected to one or more of the digital circuit switches. One or more broadband switches can then be associated with one or more of the network transmission elements, such that the broadband switches thereof interface with network transmission elements and the digital circuit switches to coordinate combined circuit and packet signaling, routing and calling processing services among varying terminals of the distributed telecommunications network.

The present communications channel synchronous micro-cell system for integrating circuit and packet data transmissions functions to blend both circuit and packet technology together to carry both constant bit rate and variable bit rate traffic with no added packet or jitter delay for constant bit rate traffic and no added circuit setup delay for variable bit rate traffic. This is accomplished by the use of a micro-cell structure for all information that is transmitted over a communication channel. The data stream comprises a series of frames, each of which consists of a predetermined number of micro-cells. The micro-cells are fixed in size, with a header, like Asynchronous Transfer Mode, but their similarity stops there. The header is a flag which indicates the type of payload that is placed in the micro-cell associated with that header. When the header indicates a payload that is synchronous with the communication medium, that micro-cell is being used as a time slot in a circuit switched sense. When the header indicates a payload that is asynchronous with the communication medium, that micro-cell is being used to transfer packets of data, which are routed by the address data embedded in the header of the packet data, independent of the micro-cell location in the frame.

A method and system for decreasing the probability of blocked access to a local exchange carrier's telecommunications network comprises a multi-mode line card for determining whether a particular call is a voice or data call. If a call is determined to require data transmission, the line card assigns time slots for interconnection of the line card to a serving digital switch. If no meaningful data is received, no time slots are assigned. In this manner, time slots interconnecting the serving digital switch to a line card are established only if data or voice is being transmitted from a subscriber line.

Method for multi-mode operation of a subscriber line card in a telecommunications system

A system and method for detecting counterfeit currency are disclosed wherein a currency bill encoded with security data is scanned by a currency scanning terminal placed at a currency exchange location such as a store or a bank. The security data can include the currency bill's serial number and a corresponding code number, and is preferably magnetically encoded on a magnetic medium affixed to or embedded in the bill. The currency scanning terminal reads the security data and transmits it via a communications link to a programmable security computer. The security computer responds to receipt of the security data by comparing the transmitted security data with previously stored security data and generating a comparison result. If the comparison result is true, the security computer calculates an updated security code, stores the updated security code in the data store, and transmits the updated security code to the currency scanning terminal. The currency scanning terminal then writes the updated security data to the currency bill and generates a validation message. If the comparison result is false, the security computer invalidates the currency bill in the data store and transmits a rejection code to the currency scanning terminal. The currency scanning terminal then writes the rejection code to the currency bill and generates a rejection message. Because each currency bill must have valid security data stored in the data store, and because the security data is updated each time the currency bill is exchanged, counterfeiting is rendered virtually impossible.

System and method for the detection of counterfeit currency

A new local-toll telephone network configuration which, using aspects of data network configurations in a unique way, supports both voice and data telephone calls. Further, this invention may be used in conjunction with existing switching systems, so that there is a minimal of capital required to upgrade a local switching system for competitive access. An ATM switch is configured so that there are permit virtual circuits (PVCs) connecting switching offices connected to it. The synchronous data stream is connected to asynchronous and the circuit identifier code is included in the payload. Thus, the ATM switch is serving as a conduit for large amounts of data (including packetized voice) between local telephone switching systems while not having to take the time to set up each connection individually.

An asynchronous transfer mode switching network can be made to look like a synchronous tandem switch to end offices connected to the network by establishing a permanent virtual path through the network that carries information between the end offices. Individual channels to be switched are assigned ATM VCI addresses at both ends that correspond to the time slot channel being sent and a time slot channel being received.

In order to gain access to a secured system, a user must be able to enter valid user identification information and must also have a remote wireless communication device such as a pager or cellular telephone having a number that is substantially unique to that user. When the user requests access to the secured system, the system places a call to the user's remote wireless communication device and sends that device revalidation information such as a random number generated by the secured system. The user must return the revalidation information to the secured system to gain access. In an alternative embodiment, another person (a user-approver) has the remote wireless communication device and must return the revalidation information to the secured system if the user-approver approves the user's request for access.
