A window for a sensing system is provided. The window includes a substrate, a layered film disposed on a first surface of the substrate, the layered film including alternating layers of higher refractive index materials and lower refractive index materials, wherein the refractive index of the higher refractive index materials is greater than the refractive index of the lower refractive index materials, and a maximum hardness, measured at the layered film and by the Berkovich Indenter Hardness Test, of at least 8 GPa. The window has: an average percentage transmittance of greater than 75% for electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength of 1550 nm at normal or near normal incidence; and an average percentage reflectance of less than 10% for electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength of 1550 nm at any angle of incidence within the range of 0° to 8°.

Hardened optical windows with anti-reflective, reflective, and absorbing layers for infrared sensing systems

Embodiments of durable, anti-reflective articles are described. In one or more embodiments, the article includes a substrate and an anti-reflective coating disposed on the major surface. The article exhibits an average light transmittance of about 94% or greater over an optical wavelength regime and/or an average light reflectance of about 2% or less over the optical wavelength regime, as measured from an anti-reflective surface. In some embodiments, the article exhibits a maximum hardness of about 8 GPa or greater as measured by a Berkovich Indenter Hardness Test along an indentation depth of about 50 nm or greater and a b* value, in reflectance, in the range from about −5 to about 1 as measured on the anti-reflective surface only at all incidence illumination angles in the range from about 0 degrees to about 60 degrees under an International Commission on Illumination illuminant.

Durable anti-reflective articles

A window for a sensing system is provided. The window includes a substrate having a predetermined thickness and an index of refraction for electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength of 905 nm and a layered film disposed on the substrate, the layered film including alternating layers of a high refractive index material and a lower refractive index material, the high refractive index material having a higher refractive index than the lower refractive index material, wherein each layer of the alternating layers of the layered film has a thickness, and the thicknesses of the alternating layers are configured so that the window has a transmittance of at least 80% for electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength within the range of 850 nm to 950 nm. The window further includes a hardness of at least 10 GPa, at the layered film, as measured by the Berkovich Indenter Hardness Test.

Hardened optical windows for LIDAR applications at 850-950NM

One or more aspects of the disclosure pertain to an article including an optical film structure disposed on an inorganic oxide substrate, which may include a strengthened or non-strengthened substrate that may be amorphous or crystalline, such that the article exhibits scratch resistance and retains the same or improved optical properties as the inorganic oxide substrate, without the optical film structure disposed thereon. In one or more embodiments, the article exhibits an average transmittance of 85% or more, over the visible spectrum (e.g., 380 nm-780 nm). Embodiments of the optical film structure include aluminum-containing oxides, aluminum-containing oxy-nitrides, aluminum-containing nitrides (e.g., AlN) and combinations thereof. The optical film structures disclosed herein also include a transparent dielectric including oxides such as silicon oxide, germanium oxide, aluminum oxide and a combination thereof. Methods of forming such articles are also provided.

Scratch-resistant laminates with retained optical properties

Disclosed herein are coated articles which may include a substrate and an optical coating that includes one or more layers of deposited material. At least a portion of the optical coating may include a residual compressive stress of more than 100 MPa. The coated article may include a strain-to-failure of 0.4% or more as measured by a Ring-on-Ring Tensile Testing Procedure. The optical coating may include a maximum hardness of 8 GPa or more and an average photopic transmission of 50% or greater.

Coated articles with optical coatings having residual compressive stress

Durable and scratch resistant articles including low-reflectance optical coating with gradient portion. In some embodiments, an article comprises: a substrate comprising a first major surface; and an optical coating disposed over the first major surface. The optical coating comprises: a second major surface; a thickness; and a first gradient portion. A refractive index of the optical coating varies along a thickness of the optical coating. The difference between the maximum refractive index of the first gradient portion and the minimum refractive index of the first gradient portion is 0.05 or greater. The absolute value of the slope of the refractive index of the first gradient portion is 0.1/nm or less everywhere along the thickness of the first gradient portion. The article exhibits a single side photopic average light reflectance of 3% or less, and a maximum hardness from 10 GPa to 30 GPa.

Hybrid gradient-interference hardcoatings

A method for in-situ measurement of a thickness of a coating deposited by a deposition process, includes the steps of initiating deposition within a deposition chamber such that a first coating forms on an outer surface of a probe disposed in the deposition chamber, wherein the probe comprises a coil assembly including at least one coil, wherein the probe is separated by a distance from a substrate disposed within the deposition chamber; exciting the coil assembly with a first alternating current to produce a first time-varying magnetic field, the first time-varying magnetic field generating an eddy current in the first coating; determining a metric related to an inductance or resistance of the coil assembly, wherein a value of the metric is related to a first thickness of the first coating and results at least partially from an eddy current magnetic field produced by an eddy current in the coating; and correlating the first thickness of the first coating to a second thickness of a second coating deposited on a surface of the substrate.

In-situ deposition thickness monitoring

Embodiments of articles including a low-contrast anti-reflection coating are disclosed. The coated surface of such articles exhibits a reduced difference in reflectance between a pristine state and when a surface defect is present. In one or more embodiments, the coated surface of such articles exhibits a first average reflectance in the range from about 0.6% to about 6.0% in a pristine condition and a second average reflectance of about 8% or less after removal of a surface thickness of the anti-reflection coating. In other embodiments, the coated substrate exhibits a second average reflectance of about 10% or less, when the coated surface comprises a contaminant. In some embodiments, the coated substrate exhibits a first color coordinate (a*, b*) in a pristine condition and a second color coordinate (a*, b*) after the presence of a surface defect such that Δa*b* is about 6 or less.

Low contrast anti-reflection articles with reduced scratch and fingerprint visibility

According to one or more embodiments described herein, a coated article may comprise: a transparent substrate having a major surface, the major surface comprising a textured or rough surface inducing light scattering; and an optical coating disposed on the major surface of the transparent substrate and forming an air-side surface, the optical coating comprising one or more layers of material, the optical coating having a physical thickness of greater than 300 nm, wherein the coated article exhibits a maximum hardness of about 10 GPa or greater as measured on the air-side surface by a Berkovich Indenter Hardness Test along an indentation depth of about 50 nm or greater.

Coated articles with light-altering features and methods for the production thereof

Methods for depositing inorganic particles including titanium carbonitride on a metal substrate via chemical vapor deposition (CVD). In some embodiments, the CVD process may be supplied by two or more source gasses that react to form the inorganic particles. At least one of the sources gases includes a titanium source gas. And a source of carbon and nitrogen may be (a) a single source gas including a carbon and nitrogen source gas with a heat of formation energy that is less than 65.9 kilojoules per mole and/or (b) two source gases including a carbon source gas with a gas molecule having a carbon-nitrogen single bond and a nitrogen source gas. In some embodiments, the CVD process may be supplied by a source gas including a metalorganic compound to form the inorganic particles. In some embodiments, the CVD process may be supplied by an aluminum-containing metalorganic reducing agent.

Low temperature methods for depositing inorganic particles on a metal substrate and articles produced by the same

Embodiments of this disclosure pertain to articles that exhibit scratch-resistance and improved optical properties. In some examples, the article exhibits a color shift of about 2 or less, when viewed at an incident illumination angle in the range from about 0 degrees to about 60 degrees from normal under an illuminant. In one or more embodiments, the articles include a substrate, and an optical film disposed on the substrate. The optical film includes a scratch-resistant layer and an optical interference layer. The optical interference layer may include one or more sub-layers that exhibit different refractive indices. In one example, the optical interference layer includes a first low refractive index sub-layer and a second a second high refractive index sub-layer. In some instances, the optical interference layer may include a third sub-layer.

Low-color scratch-resistant articles with a multilayer optical film

Embodiments of articles with optical coatings are described herein. According to one embodiment, an article may comprise a substrate having a major surface, and an optical coating disposed on the major surface and forming an anti-reflective surface, the optical coating comprising an anti-reflective coating. The article may exhibit a maximum hardness of about 12 GPa or greater as measured on the anti-reflective surface by a Berkovich Indenter Hardness Test along an indentation depth of about 100 nm or greater. The article may exhibit a single side average light reflectance measured at the anti-reflective surface of about 8% or less over an optical wavelength regime in the range from about 400 nm to about 800 nm. The article may exhibit an average light transmission of about 90% or greater over an optical wavelength regime in the range from about 400 nm to about 800 nm.

Scratch-resistant anti-reflective articles

A coated article is described herein that may comprise a substrate and an optical coating. The substrate may have a major surface comprising a first portion and a second portion. A first direction that is normal to the first portion of the major surface may not be equal to a second direction that is normal to the second portion of the major surface. The optical coating may be disposed on at least the first portion and the second portion of the major surface. The coated article may exhibit at the first portion of the substrate and at the second portion of the substrate hardness of about 8 GPa or greater at an indentation depth of about 50 nm or greater as measured on the anti-reflective surface by a Berkovich Indenter Hardness Test.
