The flow rate of liquid, the rate of travel of the foraminous medium, and the differential pressure across the foraminous medium, as established by the pressure exerted by the flowing liquid on the foraminous medium and the relative pressure underneath the foraminous medium, are controlled at different locations along the length of the separation chamber to provide optimum steady-state separation for a given waste stream.

There is disclosed a novel cellulosic web and a method for its manufacture. The web is fabricated of fibrous material and is characterized by one of its surfaces being nubby. Such web is formed by the deposition of fibers from an aqueous slurry onto the surface of a multiplex forming fabric defining pockets in one surface thereof, under conditions of flow and rate of water removal that establish high shear fluid flow and result in the orientation of fibers and/or fiber segments at an angle with respect to the plane of the forming fabric. The resultant web has a high apparent bulk and good absorbency and strength properties.

A method and apparatus are described for the manufacture of surgical sponges defined by a sponge body with at least a segment of a string, preferably containing a material opaque to x-rays, joined to the sponge body. The apparatus provides for the manufacture of the surgical sponges in an automatic manner and continuous manner by feeding a length of the string from a string supply and an end portion of sponge from a supply of sponge in directions substantially ninety-degrees to one another to an area of intersection area where a segment of the string overlies the sponge at a selected distance from the end thereof remote to the supply of sponge. The string segment is joined to the sponge, preferably by an ultrasonic welding mechanism. The sponge end containing the joined string is then severed at a preselected location depending upon the width of sponge body desired. The cutting mechanism used to sever the sponge and the welding mechanism are moveable as a single unit to alternately place the welding mechanism over the segment of the string and cutting mechanism at the preselected location on the sponge. The sponge bodies serially connected by the string at spaced apart locations are separated into discrete surgical sponges by sequentially displacing the string-connected sponge bodies to a string and sponge cutting arrangement where the string is first cut at an edge of each sponge and then an excess of the sponge adjacent this edge of each sponge is severed.

A burn sheet comprising a plurality of layers laminated one to another and including a liquid-permeable top layer, a liquid-absorbent layer and a strength-imparting scrim layer. The scrim layer comprises an open pattern of crossing multifilamentary yarns bonded on one another at their crossings. The scrim is flattened prior to its incorporation into the burn sheet laminate so that cut ends of the scrim yarn monofilaments yield to the touch and the sheet is rendered conformable, and telegraphing of the scrim to the surface of the sheet is minimized. The sheet is suitable for use as a transfer sheet as well as for a burn sheet.

A system for separating solids from a slurry containing liquids and solids including an elongated plate having spaced apart openings therethrough, a pair of superposed endless screens supported for sliding movement on the upper surface of the plate. A pond of the slurry is formed over a portion of the run of the screens. A vacuum chamber is provided on the side of the plate opposite the side supporting the screens to draw liquid from the pond through the screens. A roll nip is provided to engage the screens to apply pressure to material on the screens at the nip. Various screen constructions and operating parameters are also disclosed.

Dewatering system

A silt fence is provided which includes an elongated first strip of material which was a relatively uniform porosity and which is fabricated from filaments of relatively small diameter. The first strip is attached to an elongated second strip of material which is fabricated from yarns in a grid pattern, the yarns being of relatively large diameter relative to the filaments of the first strip of material and having from about 2 to 8 yarns per inch in each direction. The composite strip has a Frazier air permeability of from about 100 to 1000 cubic feet per square foot per minute at 1/2 inch of water pressure. The material may be provided with a hem in which is disposed a tensioning member. In use the tensioning member in the hem is attached to posts and the other edge of the material is buried in a trench in the ground.

A method utilizing the phenomenon of plug flow for removing solids from liquid. Liquid with suspended solids, such as paper mill effluent, is passed through a conduit under conditions of plug flow. This produces a moving plug containing the suspended particles, with the liquid along the wall of the conduit being relatively free of suspended particles. The wall is made liquid permeable, and liquid is forced through the wall as the liquid moves along the conduit. Preferably the wall is made relatively impermeable to a substantial portion of the suspended solids to assure that relatively pure liquid flows through the wall, leaving the solids concentrated in the remaining liquid flowing through the conduit. Liquid with concentrated solids is recirculated.

Method utilizing plug flow for separating solids from liquid

Fibers are air laid on a twin-wire machine to form a composite pad. A pair of endless foraminous carriers are passed through a forming chamber where fibers suspended in air are directed between the carriers. A layer of fibers is built up on each of the carriers by applying pressure differential across the carriers in the chamber to force air from the suspension through the carriers. In one form of the invention the air is directed through the respective carriers in different patterns to form a respective fiber layers of different cross section. The carriers converge within the chamber in their direction of motion to join the facing surfaces of the respective layers to form a composite pad of non-uniform cross section. According to one aspect of the invention, excess fibers are removed from the facing surfaces just prior to their being joined.

Thereafter, the pulp deposit on each mold is simultaneously subjected to a generally uniform pressing with a second belt and suction which forms a smooth exposed surface on the pulp deposit and removes a portion of the liquid therein.

Pneumatically inflatable tube members are mounted on spaced wheel members, which are in turn mounted on a cylindrical sleeve rotatably mounted on a support shaft. The tube members are pneumatically interconnected and the chuck is fully controllable from either end for insertion in or removal from the core of a roll by valve and vent means adjacent each end of the chuck.

A method and apparatus are disclosed for making a molded pulp product such as a plate or the like which has an upper liquid impervious layer integrally secured thereon. The pulp product is formed on a foraminous mold and, together with the mold, is heated to the softening temperature of a liquid impervious thermoplastic sheet material which is caused to be cut to size by engagement with a cutting edge on the mold whereafter the severed portion is drawn by suction and bonded to a selected surface area of the pulp product.
