The presence of a rear-facing infant seat on a motor vehicle seat is reliably and cost-effectively detected based on the buckle state and tension of the seat belt, and the position of the seat belt relative to the seat bight region where the seat bottom and back cushions meet. These seat belt parameters are measured and applied to a predefined decision matrix to detect the presence of a rear-facing infant seat.

A weight-based occupant characterization method reliably distinguishes between large and small adult occupants by dynamically adjusting a threshold used to distinguish between large and small adult occupants. The threshold adjustments effectively increase the separation between the detected weight and the threshold, minimizing oscillation of the determined characterization following an initial occupant characterization. A learning routine gradually adjusts the threshold up to a predefined maximum adjustment so long as the detected weight is within a tolerance or hysteresis band, or a locking routine produces a step change adjustment of the threshold when the detected weight is outside the tolerance or hysteresis band for at least a predefined time.

An occupant weight-based airbag suppression method utilizes adjustable time constant filtering and dynamic threshold adjustment to reliably determine and indicate airbag suppression status. The filter time constant is ordinarily set to a first value that provides relatively fast tracking of the raw occupant weight, but is set to a second value that provides relatively slow tracking of the raw occupant weight when both the raw and filtered occupant weights are within a specified band about the threshold value. The threshold value and band are dynamically adjusted after the suppression status is initially determined so as to effectively increase the separation between the filtered weight and the threshold.

A multiple sensor, vehicle seat occupant status determination system uses dynamic variations in occupant responsive sensor output due to accelerations of the vehicle seat to discriminate via a statistical method between sensors that are failed and those that are operating correctly and eliminates the contribution of signals detected as not valid from the status determination. If and only if the maximum and minimum sampled signal values of at least one of the received signals span upper and lower control reference values derived from the sampled signal values, a variance value for each of the signals is derived; and one or both of the greatest two or the smallest two variance values are checked against a relative size factor to detect an outlier signal value. If an outlier signal value is detected more than a predetermined number of consecutive times, the status classification is performed without signal values from the outlier sensor.

A vehicle seat occupant classification system uses a pressure responsive, fluid filled bladder and pressure sensor adapted for engagement with an underside of a foam seat cushion so as to generate a pressure signal corresponding to the weight of an occupant on an upper side of the foam seat cushion. A humidity sensor responds to relative humidity of air adjacent the pressure sensor and/or foam seat cushion to generate a humidity signal that is used to compensate at least one of the pressure signal, a stored reference pressure value and a stored threshold value, from which at least in part; an occupant classification is determined. The system preferably includes a time delay between the reading of a humidity value and the full use of that humidity value in compensation; and the time delay may be responsive to an activity factor derived from dynamic variations in the pressure signal associated with a pumping action on the foam tending to increase the rate of exchange of air between the foam and the atmosphere outside the foam. Preferably, the temperature adjacent the pressure sensor and/or foam seat cushion is also determined and used in conjunction with the humidity signal to provide au additional cross-correlation compensation.

In a vehicle seat occupant detection system, a transponder in a seat cushion is responsive to an activating signal to generate an electromagnetic signal containing unique seat identification data. An occupant detection system module senses a seat characteristic and derives therefrom an occupant detection signal. The module further generates the transponder activating signal and receives and processes the electromagnetic signal to derive the contained seat identification data. The module determines if there is seat identification data in a dedicated memory location in rewritable, non-volatile memory and, if there is, compares it to the seat identification data from the electromagnetic signal. If they do not match, the derivation of a valid occupant detection signal is prevented. If there is no seat identification data in the dedicated memory location, the module causes the seat identification data from the electromagnetic signal to be copied to the dedicated memory location if it remains unchanged for a predetermined number of transponder activations so as to allow authorized matching of a seat cushion and module.

An improved weight-based occupant characterization method reliably distinguishes between a minimum weight adult and a child seated on a booster seat. An early characterization of the seat occupant is made in an interval following a transition event such as a door opening or ignition state change that activates the occupant detection system. During this interval, an initial characterization routine monitors the seat belt tension and the raw seat pressure to identify signal values characteristic of a minimum weight adult or a child seated on a booster seat. If the indicated occupant weight during subsequent operation of the vehicle is inconsistent with the initial characterization, the initial characterization is discarded, and the seat occupancy is characterized based on the indicated occupant weight.

Dedicated memory locations for vehicle identification data and seat calibration data are provided in a first rewritable, non-volatile memory within an occupant detection system module and a second rewritable, non-volatile memory external to the occupant detection system. At least once each ignition cycle, preferably at power up, an algorithm responsive to vehicle identification data obtained from the vehicle, stored in the first rewritable, non-volatile memory and/or stored in the second rewritable, non-volatile memory, as well as the presence of seat calibration data in the first rewritable, non-volatile memory, controls the copying of seat calibration data and/or vehicle identification data between the first and second rewritable, non-volatile memories to preserve seat calibration data for a vehicle through replacement of the occupant detection system module or the entire occupant detection system.

An improved vehicle restraint system includes a seat belt tension sensor and an occupant detection control module for characterizing the occupant of a vehicle seat to determine whether to allow or suppress deployment of supplemental inflatable restraints for the occupant. The belt tension sensor includes on-board signal processing circuitry and is coupled to occupant detection control module via a two wire interface that both powers the sensor and its signal processing circuitry and supports communication of belt tension data to the occupant detection control module. The sensor produces an electrical signal responsive to seat belt tension, and the processing circuitry generates one of a specified number of messages pertaining to the range of the measured tension, and then modulates the current through the two wire interface to communicate the generated message to the occupant detection control module.

An improved vehicle seat occupant weight estimation method detects weight applied to both the seat cushion and the floor forward of the seat, and increases the measured seat weight of the occupant to account for occupant weight off-loaded to the floor. Fluid-filled bladders or other sensors are arranged to detect occupant seat weight and the weight applied to the vehicle floor forward of the seat. Upon opening of a vehicle door or an off-to-on transition of the vehicle ignition switch, the seat and floor weight sensors are monitored to detect the presence of an occupant. When the seat becomes occupied, or whenever there is a large change in the measured seat weight, the seat and floor weight are recorded, the occupant weight is estimated according to the recorded seat weight, and the inflatable restraints are allowed or suppressed based on the estimated occupant weight. When a sustained occupant weight shift is detected, the estimated occupant weight is increased in proportion to the amount of weight shifting, but is limited to a maximum value based on the detected floor and seat weights.

An improved occupant detection system and method includes a fluid-filled polymeric seat cushion bladder defining multiple fluid-filled chambers corresponding to different areas of the seat cushion, with no fluid flow between such chambers. Fluid pressures in the various individual chambers are detected and processed to develop a weight estimation that is compensated for occupant position. The chambers are configured to detect occupant weight in at least forward, rearward, inboard and outboard regions of the bottom seat cushion. When the detected pressures are unevenly distributed and the pressure in the forward, rearward, inboard or outboard regions of the seat exceeds the average pressure by at least a predetermined amount, a composite pressure indicative of occupant weight is adjusted in a direction to bias the suppression status in favor of allowing restraint deployment, unless the occupant is forwardly positioned on a seat that is also forwardly positioned.

An improved weight-based occupant characterization method reliably distinguishes between a child or small adult and a tightly cinched child seat based on a variance in the sensed occupant weight and a variance in the vehicle acceleration. The weight variance and acceleration variance are used to determine a relative or normalized variance that compensates for the effects of operating the vehicle on a rough road surface. The occupant is characterized as a child seat if the normalized variance is below a first threshold for a predetermined interval, and as a child or small adult if the normalized variation exceeds a second threshold for a predetermined interval.

An improved occupant weight detection system measures the pressure in a fluid-filled bladder disposed in or under a foam seat cushion as an indication of occupant weight, and periodically adjusts the pressure vs. occupant weight relationship to compensate for changes due to aging and usage of the foam seat cushion. The system controller develops an aging adjustment value based on a measure of the cumulative aging and usage of the seat, and uses the developed adjustment value to compensate the operation of the system. The aging adjustment value is determined primarily as a function of occupant weight and time of seat occupancy, and the compensation is achieved by using the aging adjustment value to adjust either the estimated weight, or a threshold to which the measured pressure is compared for purposes of deciding if restraint deployment should be enabled.

An improved weight-based occupant characterization method distinguishes between an empty seat and a seat having a small object on it using primary and secondary classification techniques. The primary classification technique is initiated prior to vehicle movement, and characterizes the seat occupant based on measured seat pressure. If deployment of the restraint is suppressed due to the characterization of the primary classification technique, the seat occupancy is characterized by a secondary classification technique based on variation of the measured pressure once the vehicle is in motion. Once the secondary classification technique has characterized the seat occupancy, the characterization of the primary classification technique is discarded in favor of the characterization of the secondary classification technique.
