The apparatus for applying granules to a coated asphalt sheet has a nozzle for holding an accumulation of granules, an opening at the bottom of the nozzle for discharging the granules onto the coated asphalt sheet, a buffer chamber positioned in communication with the accumulation of granules, and a vacuum source for reducing the pressure in the buffer chamber to stop the flow of granules through the opening.

A method for dispensing or depositing particulate material includes accumulating particulate material in a nozzle having an opening at the bottom for discharging the particulate material, and applying positive air pressure to a buffer chamber positioned in communication with the accumulation of particulate material to start and control the flow of particulate material through the opening and applying negative pressure to the buffer chamber to stop the flow of particulate material. An unobstructed interface can exist between a surface of the particulate material and air in the buffer chamber. In one embodiment, roofing shingle granules are applied intermittently to a moving coated asphaltic sheet through a slot to form strip roofing shingles.

Method for pneumatically controlling discharge of particulate material

A method for applying granules to a coated sheet, and in particular a coated asphaltic sheet for use in the manufacture of roofing, comprises controlling a fluid (e.g., pneumatic) counterflow through the discharge opening of a nozzle which holds an accumulation of granules therein to rapidly stop or otherwise modify the flow rate of granules onto the sheet. A buffer chamber is in communication with the granule accumulation in the nozzle, and an apparatus modifies the pressure in the buffer chamber to generate the desired fluid flow through the nozzle opening. A vacuum source provides a negative pressure for a pneumatic counterflow, and a positive pressure source is utilized to increase pressure in the buffer chamber to act as a discharge assistant.

A door positioning mechanism with a moveable carriage driven by a motor through a lead screw, wherein the moveable carriage is connected to open and close the door by movement of the door rectilinearly along a track through the expedient of a drive train utilizing a multiple sheave and cable connection between the door and the moveable carriage. A hand disconnect is provided to disable the positioning mechanism and allow manual movement of the door. A thermal (fire switch) dead weight control is also provided to over-ride the positioning mechanism and automatically shut the door.

An improved ballast for a fluorescent lamp comprising a base having a core mounted thereon with a plurality of coils operatively electrically associated with the core with each of the coils having at least one conductor extending therefrom. An electrical connector is positioned adjacent the coils and has a plurality of connectors associated therewith which are electrically connected to predetermined conductors. A component subassembly is electrically connected to predetermined connectors. A case is positioned over the core, coils, connectors and the component subassembly. The case is provided with an access opening formed therein for providing access to at least a portion of the connectors so at least a portion of a wiring harness may be inserted therethrough for selective connection to predetermined connectors.

An automatic ladling apparatus for conveying molten metal from a furnace to a die casting machine or the like. The ladle dipper is carried through its ladling cycles by means of cooperating link assemblies mounted on an upright base or pedestal. The assemblies include a motion generating link assembly having a generating arm with an outer end adapted to move through a generally horizontal path with a downwardly curved vertical portion at one end. The other end of the generating arm is connected to a crank arm mounted on a crankshaft that is turned by an appropriate drive through a Geneva motion mechanism. The motion of the generator arm is further controlled by a rocking link connected between the arm and the base. The outer end of the generator arm is connected to a second link assembly that includes a main link connected at one end to the base and a carrier link connected to the main link at one end and adapted to carry the ladle dipper at its other end. The attitude (i.e., tilt angle) between fill, transport, and pour positions is controlled through a chain and sprocket mechanism extending through the main link and carrier link and by a cam link and crank arrangement controlled alternately by the crankshaft movement and by the rocking link movement to coordinate the ladle attitude with the path of travel between the furnace and the die casting machine.

Automatic ladling apparatus

An apparatus for moving an operating head automatically through programmed functions using a telescoping arm assembly. The operating head and arm assembly are mounted on a base and are normally capable of motions about or along several axes, including linear extension and retraction relative to the base. The telescoping arm assembly includes a main carriage mounted on the base, an intermediate carriage mounted on the main carriage, and a head carriage supporting the operating head and mounted on the intermediate carriage for telescoping movement relative to the main carriage. The operating head is connected to the head carriage by a wrist joint for pivotal movement about a wrist tip axis, and even for additional rotary movement about a wrist roll axis, the control of the respective movements being accomplished for example, by chain and sprocket mechanisms in order to control the wrist movements continuously, even during the telescoping extension and retraction movement of the carriages.

Successive pouches severed from the leading end of a continuously moving strip of pouches are picked up by a series of spaced paddle assemblies and are turned from edgewise positions to broadwise positions. Each paddle assembly ducks into the pouch to pick up and turn the pouch and opens the pouch just prior to turning it to a broadwise position. Thereafter, the paddle assemblies release the pouches to carriers which advance the pouches through filling and closing stations. The carriers are more closely spaced than the paddle assemblies and are advanced at a slower rate than the paddle assemblies.

Flexible pouches are advanced continuously around an arcuate path and are filled with food chunks during the advance. A filling apparatus initially deposits the food chunks into metal containers which are circulated to a continuously rotating turret adapted to move the containers around the path in vertical registry with the pouches. As the containers are advanced by the turret, plungers force the food product out of the containers, through funnels and into the pouches. The empty containers then are removed from the turret and are returned to the filling apparatus.

Sealing heads for heat sealing the tops of continouously movable upright pouches are spaced angularly around a continuously rotatable turret and seal the pouches after steam has been introduced into the pouches and as the pouches move in an arcuate path extending around the turret. Each sealing head includes a pair of heated sealing bars and further includes a cam-operated actuator which sequentially lowers the bars, closes the bars, opens the bars, and then raises the bars as the bars rotate with the turret.

Upright pouches are successively severed from the leading end portion of a continuously advancing strip of interconnected pouches by a pair of coacting blades which track the strip and which momentarily move at the same speed as the strip. At that time, one blade is shifted laterally toward the other blade to cut the leading pouch from the strip. Prior to the cutting, a notch is formed in the upper edge portion of the strip between adjacent pouches to impart a desired shape to the upper corners of the pouches and to enable the use of a relatively simple stationary splitter for keeping the two upper edge portions of each pouch separated from one another.
