An exercise device which includes a first and second lever pivotally attached to a frame and pivotally interconnected by a connecting rod. A first arm is pivotally connected to the frame and a second arm is pivotally connected to the ends of the first arm and the second lever opposite the ends connected to the frame. The second arm includes a seat for the user, whose body weight provides a resistance to rotation of the free end of the first lever. In one embodiment a slide assembly is engaged with the second lever to selectively vary the resistance to rotation of the first lever.

Exercise device utilizing body weight for resistance

An exercise device with a true pivot point includes a plurality of arms that are joined at a joint assembly. A first arm is fixed in relation to the joint assembly and is also stabilized by a base member at an end opposite the joint assembly. In one embodiment, the base member is a foot pedal and in another embodiment the base member is a frame that includes a seat for the user. A second arm (or in some cases a pair of arms) rotates about an axis of rotation which is defined by the joint assembly. A resistance mechanism is contained in the joint assembly which includes a one-way clutch interconnected with the second arm to allow the second arm to rotate freely in a first direction. Rotation by the second arm in direction opposite the first, however, engages the resistance mechanism to create a user-selected resistance to rotation.

Exercise device with true pivot point

An exercise device with a true pivot point includes a first and a second arm joined at a joint assembly. The first arm is fixed in relation to the joint assembly and is also stabilized at an end opposite the joint assembly. The second arm rotates in a first, or in a second direction, about an axis of rotation which is defined by the joint assembly. A resistance mechanism is contained in the joint assembly which includes a one-way clutch interconnected to the second arm to allow the second arm to rotate freely in a second direction. Rotation by the second arm in a first direction, however, engages the resistance mechanism to create a resistance to the first rotation.

The invention comprises a system and method for implementing a rehabilitation protocol in a monitoring system for an orthopedic restraining device. The monitoring system provides clinician-recommended parameters for a wide number of exercises in the rehabilitation protocol, instructs a patient on how to perform the exercises, stores data relating to the patient's performance, and presents data to a clinician for analysis of the data. The orthopedic restraining device includes visual indicia while a monitoring device includes demonstration and review protocol modes.

An orthopaedic brace having a cuff formed as a single piece from bendable sheet material comprises a generally U-shaped: frame having a center segment and two extensions projecting from the ends of the center segment in a common direction. The center segment has a reduced stiffness as compared to the extensions to permit the center segment to be more readily shaped to conform to the body part of a wearer. A molded one-piece covering, such as a thermoplastic material, forms a continuous covering surrounding portions of the cuff. The cuff may be fabricated by stamping it from a sheet of metal, such as aluminum, or a composite material. By forming the sheet such that it has a variable thickness along one edge thereof, the center segment may be formed by the portion of the sheet having reduced thickness, while the extensions may be formed from the remainder of the sheet.

Hinges for orthopedic and rehabilitation braces allow intuitive, convenient and positive control and adjustment of the limits to which the braces may extend or flex. Such hinges also allow convenient locking of such braces. A flexion switch and an extension switch allow convenient repositioning of stops or limits which limit flexion and extension of the brace. Such switches may be repositioned, however, only with repositioning pressure for moving the switch to a new position combined with safety pressure for unlocking the switch. A brace locking switch may also be included. Such hinges promote more effective post-operative and rehabilitation results because they among other things allow users easily to change the flexion, extension and fixation limitations of their braces conveniently and in real time such as during post-operative and physical therapy sessions and workouts.

Joint brace hinges

A knee brace is provided that is mountable over the knee joint of a user. The brace has a compliant sleeve and a compliant cover overlying an anterior portion of the sleeve. The sleeve and cover preferably have corresponding anterior openings aligned to receive the patella when the brace is mounted over the knee joint. The sleeve and cover are joined around the perimeter of the cover to form a pocket therebetween enclosing an inflatable pad having a medial chamber and a lateral chamber in fluid isolation from each other. The chambers are provided with associated pumps and valves, rendering them selectively inflatable or deflatable. In operation, the brace is positioned over the knee joint such that the pad circumscribes a portion of the patella and one or both of the chambers are inflated as desired to stabilize the patella.

A hinged knee brace has a system of inflatable pads mounted thereon to adjustably provide secure and comfortable support for the brace against the leg. Each pad is a pneumatic bladder having a valve enabling selective inflation or deflation of the bladder with a fluid to systematically adjust the fit of the brace to the leg in accordance with the needs of the user.

A hinged orthopedic knee brace has a structural frame made up of a plurality of rigid or stiffened support components dynamically connected by one or more hinges. A plurality of pneumatic pads are attached to the inside faces of the frame to effectively grip the body of the user and simultaneously cushion the body from the frame. Each pad is connected in selective fluid communication with a pump and a fluid release valve enabling the user to instantaneously inflate or deflate the pads whenever desired to enhance the fit of the brace on the body of the user.

An electrical nerve and an electrical muscle stimulation device used in association with a support unit. The stimulation device is adaptable to be selectively engageable with a plurality of different body braces such that output connectors associated with the stimulation device electrically contact keyed connectors associated with a mounting carrier secured to the particular support unit. The support means includes at least two electrode pads which are selectively positionable at different locations on the support means. The connection between the output connectors of the stimulation device and the keyed connectors applies a stimulation signal to the electrode pads the size of which determines the carrier frequency of the stimulation signal which is impedance matched to the electrode size.

An osteoarthritic knee brace is provided having flexible upper and lower arm members rotatably connected to each other by a rotary hinge assembly. A selectively inflatable or deflatable fluid-containing pad is positionable between the hinge assembly and a side of the knee joint. In operation, the brace is mounted on the leg with the pad engaging both the hinge assembly and the side of the knee joint, the hinge assembly aligned with the knee joint, and the upper and lower arm members aligned with the upper and lower legs, respectively. The upper and lower arm members are stressed away from the knee joint, thereby applying a restoring force to the knee joint across the hinge assembly and the pad that effectively treats the osteoarthritic knee joint. The restoring force is adjustable by selective inflation or deflation of the pad.

Osteoarthritic knee brace

An adjustable shoulder brace is provided for stabilizing and immobilizing the shoulder following an injury or surgical trauma to the soft tissue thereof. The shoulder brace is mountable on the arm and torso to isolate the shoulder and is fully adjustable across the abduction, flexion and rotation ranges of motion of the shoulder to enable fixation of the shoulder in virtually any rehabilitative position. The brace is made up of a series of rigid support members secured to the body of the patient, and a plurality of selectively rotatable and lockable joints adjustably interconnecting the support members. The combined effect of the joints simulates the entire range of motion of the shoulder.
