Devices, components and fabrication methods are provided for improving the efficiency of OLED displays. An outcoupling component such as a microlens array (MLA) is attached to an OLED, with a relatively small distance between the MLA and the OLED. Cross-talk and back scattering are reduced by the use of colored lenses, focusing layers, and other methods.

OLED devices having improved efficiency

A flexible multilayer scattering substrate is disclosed. Built on a flexible supporting layer, the multilayer contains one or more scattering layers and other functional layers so that it can extract the trapped light in substrate and waveguide of an OLED. The processing of each layer is fully compatible with large area, flexible OLED manufactory, and by controlling processing conditions of each incorporated layer, the substrate microstructure can be tuned. Topographic features can be created on the top surface of substrate by changing the thickness and properties of the multilayer.

Embodiments disclosed herein provide an organic light emitting diode (OLED) device is provided, including a high index substrate having an index of refraction of 1.5 or greater, a reflective electrode, an organic emissive layer configured to emit light having a wavelength of &#x3bb;; and where an optical distance between the organic emissive layer and the reflective electrode of the OLED is between &#x3bb;/4 and 3&#x3bb;/4.

Devices to increase OLED output coupling efficiency with a high refractive index substrate

A device, includes a substrate, an organic light emitting diode (OLED) disposed over the substrate, a first layer optically coupled to the OLED and having a first surface including a first plurality of topographical surface features and an index of refraction n, and an enhancement layer optically coupled to the OLED and vertically stacked with the first layer, having a thickness of not more than 100 nm, a second surface including a second plurality of topographical surface features, and an index of refraction n, wherein nhas at least a 0.1 difference from an index of refraction of at a top layer and a bottom layer adjacent to the enhancement layer.
