A loaded plate for use with or as part of a fuel cell of a fuel cell stack in which the loading material of the plate is in cord form. The loading material can be either an electrolyte or a catalyst and the cord form is realized by extruding the loading material on the plate.

Sol-gel coated cathode side hardware for carbonate fuel cells

A method of forming an electrolyte matrix for a carbonate fuel cell. An .alpha.-LiAlO.sub.2 ceramic is mixed in an aqueous solvent having a citric acid dispersant and deflocculated using a high energy attrition milling. The deflocculated mixture is added to an alcohol/glycerol aqueous binder system to form a slurry which is degassed and then tape cast to form the matrix.

Method of making matrix for carbonate fuel cells

A matrix for a carbonate electrolyte including a support material and an additive constituent having a relatively low melting temperature and a relatively high coefficient of thermal expansion. The additive constituent is from 3 to 45 weight percent of the matrix and is formed from raw particles whose diameter is in a range of 0.1 .mu.m to 20 .mu.m and whose aspect ratio is in a range of 1 to 50. High energy intensive milling is used to mix the support material and additive constituent during matrix formation. Also disclosed is the use of a further additive constituent comprising an alkaline earth containing material. The further additive is mixed with the support material using high energy intensive milling.
