A recording material including a support having at least one colored surface and a layer of polymeric material is described. The layer including polymeric particles has a core/shell structure, and the particles are either (i) particles having an outermost polymer shell having a calculated Tg of from 40° C. to 80° C., or (ii) particles having an inner polymer shell having a calculated Tg of from 40° C. to 130° C. and an outer polymer shell having a calculated Tg of from −55° C. to 50° C. The calculated Tg of said outer polymer shell is lower than that of said inner polymer shell, the particles including, when dry, at least one void capable of providing opacity to said layer, and the colored surface has sufficient color density to be visibly contrasting to a surface of the subsequent layer including the polymeric particles disposed thereon.

Recording material

A recording material including a support and disposed thereon at least one layer including certain core/shell polymeric particles, the particles having, whey dry, at least one void; and an opacity reducer is provided. A method for providing an image using the recording sheet is also provided.

In the present invention a composite particle including: a first polymeric particle having a diameter of from 100 nm to 3.5 microns including a core and a shell: the core including, when dry, at least one void; and the shell polymer having a calculated glass transition temperature ('Tg') greater than 50&#xb0; C.; and a second polymeric particle disposed on the surface of the first polymeric particle, the second polymeric particle having a minimum film-forming temperature of greater than 20&#xb0; C.; wherein the ratio of the diameter of the first polymeric particle to the diameter of the second polymeric particle is from 1 to 50; and wherein the ratio of the weight of the first polymeric particle to the weight of the second polymeric particle is from 0.1 to 40, is provided.

Composite particles

In the present invention a composite particle including: a first polymeric particle having a diameter of from 100 nm to 3.5 microns including a core and a shell: the core including, when dry, at least one void; and the shell polymer having a calculated glass transition temperature('Tg') greater than 50&#xb0; C.; and a second polymeric particle disposed on the surface of the first polymeric particle, the second polymeric particle having a minimum film-forming temperature of greater than 20&#xb0; C.; wherein the ratio of the diameter of the first polymeric particle to the diameter of the second polymeric particle is from 1 to 50; and wherein the ratio of the weight of the first polymeric particle to the weight of the second polymeric particle is from 0.1 to 40, is provided. In certain embodiments the composite particle further includes pigment particles having a diameter of from 10 nm to 5 microns disposed on the surface of the composite particle, wherein the ratio of the weight of the pigment particles to the weight of the composite particle is from 0.1 to 10. Also provided is a method for forming the composite particles, a thermosensitive recording material including the composite particles and a method for providing the thermosensitive recording material.

An ambient curable aqueous dispersion of polymer particles containing pendant ethylenically unsaturated side chains; a method of applying to a substrate a coating composition containing the aqueous dispersion of polymer particles; and a method of making the aqueous dispersion of polymer particles are provided.

Ambient curable polymer

An inkjet ink binder composition including an emulsion polymer, the polymer including as polymerized units 1&#x2013;10%, by weight based on dry polymer weight, of a monomer selected from the group consisting of methylol acrylamide, methylol methacrylamide, methyl acrylamidoglycolate methyl ether, acrylamidoglycolic acid, and mixtures thereof is provided. An inkjet ink composition including the emulsion polymer, a liquid medium, and a pigment and a method for improving the durability of inkjet ink printed on a substrate are also provided.

Inkjet ink composition

A non-pigmented ink composition suitable for use in ink jet printing is provided made up of a blend of two or more hollow micro-spheres comprising a small particle size hollow micro-sphere and a larger particle size hollow micro-sphere. The remainder of the ink composition comprises a suitable carrier vehicle, which typically contains water, alcohols, surfactants, humectants and optionally a resin component.

Non-pigmented ink jet inks

Inorganic material particles are dispersed in an aqueous medium with surface charge adjusting additives to give a moderately stable slurry or pigment grind. The dispersion can be used to prepare fully formulated compositions. Products formulated using the aqueous dispersion can be prepared to give the same performance as products including inorganic material dispersed with conventional polyelectrolyte pigment dispersants, but with higher levels of inorganic material, or superior performance properties with like levels of inorganic material.

Process for preparing an aqueous dispersion

A non-aqueous dispersion for modifying alkyd-containing coating formulations and a method for manufacturing the non-aqueous dispersion are provided. The non-aqueous dispersion contains from about 10 to about 60 parts by weight of a low molecular weight solution polymer, having a selected glass transition temperature greater than about -10.degree. C., and from about 90 to about 40 parts by weight of a polymer which is insoluble in the non-aqueous medium, and where the soluble polymer is attached to or adsorbed onto the insoluble polymer particles. The non-aqueous dispersion is preferably prepared by dispersion polymerization to form the insoluble polymer in a non-aqueous medium in the presence of the soluble polymer.

Non-aqueous dispersion for alkyd formulation

This invention relates to a non-aqueous coating composition and a method for reducing the drying time of a non-aqueous coating composition by incorporating composite polymer particles having a softer, insoluble first stage and a hard second stage without adversely affecting the viscosity and pot life of the liquid coating composition and without degrading the properties of the final dry coating, including color, flexibility, impact resistance, gasoline resistance, salt spray resistance and humidity resistance.

Coating compositions incorporating composite polymer particles

Novel thickening agents, useful for thickening non-aqueous solvent-containing compositions, are provided. The thickening agents are the reaction product of a polyol containing at least two hydroxyl groups; a polyisocyanate containing at least two isocyanato groups; and an active hydrogen compound. A method of thickening non-aqueous systems by admixing with the novel thickening agents is also provided.

Non-aqueous thickening agents

Low levels of surface-active, aliphatic C.sub.16 or greater hydrocarbon-type compounds are used to reduce the rate of evaporation of water from waterborne polymer products such as latex coatings. This increases the wet-edge or open time of the freshly applied coating, improves integrity and adhesion of the dried coating, and reduces skin formation in containers and on application equipment.
