A method of multi-radio interworking to provide integrated cellular and WLAN access for a multi-radio device is provided. A serving base station in a cellular network first obtains wireless local area network (WLAN) information and then forward the WLAN information to a serving device such that the serving device is capable to connect with both the cellular network and a WLAN. The WLAN information may comprise scanning information, WLAN QoS information, WLAN layer-3 information, or additional WLAN access point information. The WLAN information is forwarded based on triggering events associated with the serving base station information, WLAN coverage information, or the serving device information. Based on the received WLAN information, when entering WLAN coverage, the serving device activates its WLAN access to forward traffic from the cellular access network to the WLAN access network. When leaving WLAN coverage, the serving device deactivates its WLAN access to save power consumption.

Method of multi-radio interworking in heterogeneous wireless communication networks

In a wireless OFDM multi-carrier communication system, a mobile station obtains measurement result of a first received signal strength indication (RSSI) of a first preamble signal transmitted from a base station over a first radio frequency (RF) carrier. The mobile station also obtains signal offset information between the first RF carrier and a second RF carrier of the base station. In response to the measurement result and the signal offset information, the mobile station estimates a second RSSI of a second preamble signal transmitted by the base station over the second RF carrier without performing scanning over the second RF carrier. In one novel aspect, the mobile station identifies a carrier group containing multiple carriers that belong to the same base station. Measurement optimization, initial cell selection and cell reselection optimization, report reduction, and other carrier group based optimization can be achieved in the multi-carrier system based on identified carrier group.

Measurement and carrier group based optimization in wireless OFDM multi-carrier communication systems

Methods and apparatus are provided to measure, estimate throughput of wireless network for traffic offload. In one novel aspect, the UE determines the association status of a radio access network (RAN). The UE measures or estimates the end-to-end throughput of the RAN. In one embodiment, non-intrusive estimation by QoS probing request is used. In another embodiment, direct measurement with modeling is used. The modeling uses admission control/scheduling. In another embodiment, estimation or probing the metrics with or without modeling is used with either in-band probing or non-intrusive probing. In yet another embodiment, the throughput is obtained based on network signaling messages. In another novel aspect, the UE selects a dynamic measurement or estimation algorithm based on the association status and the QoS type of the traffic. Admission control procedure or binary admission procedure is used with the initial bandwidth request based on association status.

Dynamic algorithms for WLAN-cellular performance estimation, access selection, and traffic offload

A method of providing Local IP Access (LIPA) indication is proposed. In one novel aspect, an enhanced cell selection method is proposed using LIPA capability information. Based on LIPA capability related information, a UE is able to prioritize LIPA-capable cells and establish a corresponding packet data network (PDN) connection accordingly. In one embodiment, LIPA information is informed to the UE via Non Access Stratum (NAS) signaling. The UE stores LIPA capability information when receiving a NAS message from a mobility management entity (MME). Later on, when the UE performs cell selection or reselection in idle mode, the UE can use the stored LIPA capability information to prioritize LIPA-capable cells.

System and method for indicating local IP access support via NAS signaling

A method to realize IP flow mobility (IFOM) between 3GPP access and non-3GPP access over GTP based interfaces is proposed. A user equipment is connected to a PDN-GW via a 3GPP access network and a non-3GPP access network. The UE transmits an IFOM triggering message to the PDN-GW, which selects IP flows to be moved based on EPS bearer ID and IP flow description. The PDN-GW sends an Update Bearer Request to a WAG or ePDG, and updates its mapping table if the Update Bearer Request is successful. The UE also updates its mapping table upon receiving an IFOM acknowledgement from the WAG or ePDG. The PDN-GW initiates a 3GPP bearer modification procedure to move the selected IP flows.

Method and apparatus of IP flow mobility in 4G wireless communication networks

Methods for a mobile station to handover between IEEE 802.16e and 802.16m systems are provided. The mobile station is served by an IEEE 802.16e-only base station or an IEEE 802.16e zone of a 16e/16m-conexistence base station. In a zone-switch based handover procedure, the mobile station first performs an IEEE 802.16e legacy handover procedure such that the mobile station handovers from the serving base station to an IEEE 802.16e zone of a target base station. The mobile station then performs a zone-switch procedure such that the mobile station switches from the IEEE 802.16e zone to an IEEE 802.16m zone of the target base station. In a direct handover procedure, the mobile station performs an IEEE 802.16m handover procedure such that the mobile station handovers from the serving base station to the IEEE 802.16m zone of the target base station directly.

Method and apparatus for handover between IEEE 802.16e and 802.16m systems

A comprehensive solution is provided for multi-carrier scanning and handover operations in OFDM wireless systems. A multi-carrier scanning is any scanning operation that involves multi-carrier radio frequency carriers. In one embodiment, a mobile station communicates with a serving base station over a primary carrier, and performs scanning over one or more determined carriers. A multi-carrier handover is any handover operation that involves multiple radio frequency carriers. In a first embodiment, a break-before-entry (BBE) handover procedure with fast synchronization is provided. In a second embodiment, an entry-before-break (EBB) handover procedure through unavailable intervals is provided. In a third embodiment, EBB handover procedures for both inter-FA and intra-FA using multiple carriers are provided. Finally, in a fourth embodiment, intra-BS handover procedures are provided. The multi-carrier handover procedures may be applied to 2-to-2 or N-to-N carriers handover situation. The overall scanning time and handover interruption time may be reduced through the provided procedures.

Scanning and handover operation in multi-carrier wireless communications systems

A fast feedback mechanism is provided in a contention-based ranging procedure. A Subscriber Station (SS) initializes a ranging procedure by sending a ranging code on a selected ranging opportunity for resource access to a Base Station (BS) on a shared ranging channel in a previous uplink frame. The SS also starts a time associated with the ranging code. In response to all received ranging opportunities, the BS broadcasts an acknowledgement (ACK) in a subsequent downlink frame. The ACK comprises a reception status message that indicates the decoding status of the ranging opportunities. With the novel fast feedback mechanism, when ranging collision or failure occurs, upon receiving the reception status report, the SS will proceed with the next round of contention without continuing wait for the entire timeout period. As a result, the total latency due to the ranging collision or failure is reduced.

Fast feedback contention-based ranging procedure in wireless communications systems
