MAC layer enhancements in protocol stacks of a user terminal of a satellite communication system such as a 5G based system. The MAC layer may include a scheduler that allows resource aggregation by allocating additional radio resources to users on one beam using carriers allocated to an adjacent beam. The MAC layer enhancements may also provide user terminals the ability to report their battery status to the scheduler which can then send signals to the user terminal that allow the terminal to shut down electronics to conserve power resources based on the battery status.

MAC layer enhancement for an air interface in a satellite communication system

A method for communicating with a legacy terminal supporting a legacy air interface and a new terminal supporting a next generation air interface including: assigning a same carrier to the legacy terminal and the new terminal; receiving a terminal identifier and an optional payload for transmission at a MAC/RLC layer; determining if the terminal identifier is associated with the legacy terminal or the new terminal; composing, based on the determining, a burst header; formatting, a burst including the burst header and the optional payload; and transmitting the burst. In the method, the burst header is set to one of the one or more valid burst headers when the burst is associated with the legacy terminal, and the burst header is set to one of the one or more undefined burst headers when the burst is associated with the new terminal.

Backward compatible physical layer and signaling for satellite communication

A system and method for operating a hybrid 4G satellite network. Implementations include a route management function (RMF) that receives link status from the satellites and determines simple routing tables which are uploaded to the satellites. The routing tables allow the satellites to route data based on a satellite ID placed in a data header to reduce the memory and computing load on satellite resources. The MEO-LEO system includes an LEO constellation combined with a MEO constellation where the LEO constellation may provide global coverage with broad average capacity and may support 'hot spot' coverage where desired. The MEO constellation may provide unique advantages including backhaul to ground in remote areas, higher traffic density for key locations, and a secure global backhaul for key customers. Data may be routed over optical inter-satellite links using Software Defined Networking concepts to provide MEO-LEO (backhaul and ground access), LEO-LEO (upstream & downstream); and (3) MEO-MEO (crosslinks & downlinks). Embodiments disclosed herein relate generally to techniques for mitigating blockages associated with satellite systems. More specifically, techniques disclosed herein, describe solutions for minimizing service interruption during satellite handover. One or more blockages associated with one or more user terminals that connect to a satellite system may be determined by various means. Utilizing those blockages, handover times for the one or more user terminals may be determined such that service interrupts may be minimized.

Systems for mitigating service interrupts in satellite systems

Techniques described herein provide phase and amplitude calibration of phased array antennas. In an N-by-M phased array having N*M channels, embodiments use aggregated measurements over multiple concurrently active channels to improve signal-to-leakage performance, while also using sequences of exclusion groups to yield an individualized calibration value for each channel (i.e., N*M individualized calibration values). For example, a J&#xd7;K channel group of the array is selected in each of a sequence of measurement frames based on a calibration schema. Over J*K measurement sub-frames, a set of J*K aggregate measurements is obtained, each with different subsets of the channel group activated and excluded from the measurement. The aggregate calibration measurements can be used to compute J*K individualized calibration values, each for a channel of the channel group. In some implementations, each calibration value is computed as a complex value including both amplitude and phase calibrations information.

Satellite communication systems and methods are disclosed herein. In an embodiment, a satellite communication system includes a user terminal and a gateway. The user terminal includes a terminal antenna and a terminal controller. The terminal antenna enables the user terminal to communicate via each of a first satellite and a second satellite. The gateway includes a gateway antenna and a gateway controller. The gateway antenna enables the gateway to communicate with the user terminal via each of the first satellite and the second satellite. At least one of the terminal controller and the gateway controller is configured to adjust a queue management policy during a handover operation from the first satellite to the second satellite.

Systems and methods to minimize handover interruption time

Systems and methods for facilitating handover reduction in satellite systems are disclosed. A system may include a processor and a memory storing instructions, which when executed by the processor, may cause the processor to detect a user terminal that is selected for a handover procedure. The handover procedure may facilitate a switch from a source beam to a target beam. Based on input data, the processor may evaluate an ideal time value pertaining to a pre-defined time instance at which a scheduled handover is to be performed. The scheduled handover may correspond to at least one of a scheduled change in operating frequency within same beam or a scheduled feeder link handover due to a change in gateway communicating with the satellite. Based on the evaluation and the input data, the processor may estimate an optimized time value that pertains to an optimized time instance associated with an expected handover reduction.
