A nonlinear radar system includes a first antenna configured to generate and emit an incident signal having a first frequency, a transponder tag attached to an existing portable object, wherein the transponder tag includes an electromagnetic nonlinear element configured to be detected by the incident signal. Upon being detected by the incident signal, the transponder tag is configured to transmit a reflected return harmonic signal having a second frequency different from the first frequency, wherein the reflected return harmonic signal is an on-off keying (OOK) signal. A second antenna is configured to receive the reflected return harmonic signal having the second frequency. The transponder tag includes a conductive layer in electrical communication with the electromagnetic nonlinear element including a Schottky diode.

Golf ball locating nonlinear radar system employing a snowflake nonlinear passive tag and associated method(s)

A nonlinear radar system includes a handheld unit including a display screen, a first antenna configured to generate and emit an incident signal having a first frequency, and a second antenna configured to receive a reflected return harmonic signal having a second frequency, as well as a transponder tag is attached to an existing golf ball. Such a transponder tag is in communication with and responsive to the handheld unit, and includes an electromagnetic nonlinear element configured to be detected by the incident signal without the need for a line of sight. Upon being detected by the incident signal, the transponder tag is configured to transmit the reflected return harmonic signal having the second frequency different from the first frequency. The transponder tag is passive and does not require a power source other than incident radiation.

Disclosed is a system and method for solid-state 2D optical phased arrays (OPAs), which are fabricated from In-rich InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs). In-rich InGaN alloys possess the unique properties of exceptionally high free-carrier-induced refractive index (n) change and low optical loss. InGaN/GaN MQW pixels play the role of using a very small fraction of a laser beam to modulate the phase of the laser beam. The phase of each MQW pixel in the OPA is controlled independently via electro-optic effect through the integration between OPA pixels with a Laterally Diffused MOSFET (LDMOS) integrated circuit driver to achieve the manipulation of the distribution of optical power in the far field. The present invention is applicable to a wide range of applications, including the operation of LIDAR systems, laser weapons, laser illuminators, and laser imaging systems.

Semiconductor optical phased arrays (OPA's) and methods related thereto

Disclosed is a system and method for a 24-GHz phased array for indoor smart radar comprising at least 6 horizontally placed antenna elements as a vertically placed 5-element series-fed microstrip patch array. The beam of the phased array can be continuously steered on the H-plane to different directions through a novel vector control array. Each element can adjust the phase and amplitude of the corresponding element of the horizontally placed linear array. The phased array system of the present invention may be fabricated on a single printed circuit board (PCB), and PIN diodes are used to realize beam steering by modulating the decomposed received signal. In order to compensate for the loss of the vector control array and reduce the noise figure, six low noise amplifiers (LNAs) are also used in the array. The present invention has the ability to continuously steer the beam on the H-plane.

24-GHz low-cost continuous beam steering phased array for indoor smart radar and methods relating thereto

Disclosed is a system and method for a complex domain radio frequency (RF) frontend, adaptive beamforming can separate the relatively slowly changed waveform delay information required from wideband RF signals, upon which a self-contained beamforming system is implemented with a low-speed baseband. By introducing vector RF multipliers in the frontend of the present invention, the amplitude and phase of RF signals are simultaneously controlled by the real and imaginary parts of complex numbers, such that beamforming algorithms derived in complex domain can be directly applied without any form of transformation. By doing so, the massive use of conventional T/R modules and high-speed baseband devices can be avoided, thus simplifying the realization and decreasing the cost of wideband digital beamforming systems for use in low cost, power efficient beamforming applications.

Complex domain beamforming system and methods relating thereto

Disclosed is a system and method for a hybrid radar system that integrates frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) mode and interferometry mode. The radar works as a time division system that continuously switches between the FMCW mode and interferometry mode. The FMCW mode is responsible for absolute range detection and the interferometry mode takes cares of the weak physiological movement monitoring. The respective accuracies in range detection and displacement measurement complements the advantages of the two radar modes, providing versatile performance. By steering the antenna beam, the proposed radar system becomes an ideal solution for indoor health care, human localization, and human-computer interaction. Objects or human targets with or without stationary clutters can be precisely located. At the same time, the targets' vital signs and gestures can be monitored.

Hybrid FMCW-interferometry radar for positioning and monitoring and methods of using same

Devices, methods and systems for wave and water level measurement using a single DC (direct current)-coupled CW (continuous wave) Doppler radar for detecting water elevation changes in time when installed up to several meters from the water surface. The radar is wireless and can stream continuous data to a local PC (personal computer) or base station in range of its radio. The radar can sample up to 40 Hz and can run on batteries for continuous sampling. The radars can include multiple radar configurations of 1, 2 and 4 radar configurations. Applications for this radar can include the measurement of beach run-up, free surface elevation in tidal zones, and storm surge elevations near bridges and critical infrastructure during storm events.

Interferometric doppler radar and method for wave and water level measurement

A method and system for cancelling body movement effect for non-contact vital sign detection is described. The method begins with sending on a first electromagnetic wave transceiver a first electromagnetic signal with a first frequency to a first side of a body, such as a person or animal. Simultaneously using a second electromagnetic wave transceiver a second electromagnetic signal is sent with a second frequency to a second side of a body, wherein the first frequency and the second frequency are different frequencies. A first reflected electromagnetic signal reflected back in response to the first electromagnetic wave on the first transceiver is received and a first baseband complex signal is extracted. Likewise a second reflected electromagnetic signal reflected back in response to the second electromagnetic wave on the second transceiver is received and a second baseband complex signal is extracted. The first baseband complex signal is mathematically combined with the second baseband complex signal to cancel out a Doppler frequency drift therebetween to yield a periodic Doppler phase effect.

Random body movement cancellation for non-contact vital sign detection

A system, method and apparatus tracks targets (e.g., tumors) during treatment (e.g., radiation therapy) using a radar motion sensor by generating a microwave signal, radiating the microwave signal to a subject, and receiving a modulated microwave signal from the subject. The modulated microwave signal is processed to provide a subject motion information using a sensor having an arctangent-demodulation microwave interferometry mode. A location of a target on or within the subject is determined based on the subject motion information and a three-dimensional model for the subject and the target. One or more control signals are generated based on the location of the target, and the treatment device is controlled using the one or more control signals to treat the target on or within the subject.

System, method and apparatus for tracking targets during treatment using a radar motion sensor

Embodiments of the present invention provide a method for non-contact detection techniques of mechanical vibrations utilizing a radio frequency system incorporating multiple carrier wavelengths. The new detection method measures multiple harmonic pairs at a carrier frequency and improves the detection accuracy and reliability by first inspecting the Bessel function coefficient of each harmonic and then determining the harmonic amplitude. The original mechanical vibration can then be reconstructed. Embodiments can be used to realize sensing of complex non-sinusoidal vibrations using a wavelength division sensing technique and allow non-contact detection through walls, smoke, fog or other low visibility environments with the advantage of longer range detection and easy integration at a low cost.

Wavelength division sensing RF vibrometer for accurate measurement of complex vibrations

Methods for recovering a detected signal in non-contact vital sign detection are provided. According to one embodiment, a detected reflected signal from a non-contact vital sign detection system can be received and provided along I channel and Q channel signal lines. A complex signal S(t) can then be reconstructed from the I channel and Q channel signal lines through complex signal demodulation. A Fourier transform can be used to obtain the detected signal's spectrum for spectrum analysis. Angular demodulation can be used to recover the information corresponding to original body movement. The complex signal demodulation and angular demodulation techniques used to provide information to determine original body movement are capable of avoiding the null detection point without limitations on frequency tuning or channel selection.

Complex signal demodulation and angular demodulation for non-contact vital sign detection

A non-contact detection technique of measuring both the frequency and the amplitude of periodic movement using a property of nonlinear phase modulation is provided. In one embodiment, the technique can utilize a 22-40 GHz radar sensor. Embodiments do not require calibration of signal amplitude for accurate measurement of movement amplitude. In addition, self-verification is possible. Furthermore, embodiments can provide measurements of frequency and amplitude using a very simple architecture. The method can be used to detect movements with amplitudes larger than 0.335 of the carrier wavelength for a fixed carrier frequency system and 0.214 of the minimum carrier wavelength for a frequency tunable system.
