Techniques and apparatuses are described that implement a smart-device-based radar system capable of detecting user gestures in the presence of saturation. In particular, a radar system employs machine learning to compensate for distortions resulting from saturation. This enables gesture recognition to be performed while the radar system's receiver is saturated. As such, the radar system can forgo integrating an automatic gain control circuit to prevent the receiver from becoming saturated. Furthermore, the radar system can operate with higher gains to increasing sensitivity without adding additional antennas. By using machine learning, the radar system's dynamic range increases, which enables the radar system to detect a variety of different types of gestures having small or large radar cross sections, and performed at various distances from the radar system.

Techniques and apparatuses are described that enable full-duplex operation for radar sensing using a wireless communication chipset. A controller initializes or controls connections between one or more transceivers and antennas in the wireless communication chipset. This enables the wireless communication chipset to be used as a continuous-wave radar or a pulse-Doppler radar. By utilizing these techniques, the wireless communication chipset can be re-purposed or used for wireless communication or radar sensing.

Techniques and apparatuses are described that enable radar modulations for radar sensing using a wireless communication chipset. A controller initializes or controls modulations performed by the wireless communication chipset. In this way, the controller can enable the wireless communication chipset to perform modulations for wireless communication or radar sensing. In some cases, the controller can further select a wireless communication channel for setting a frequency and a bandwidth of a radar signal, thereby avoiding interference between multiple radar signals or between the radar signal and a communication signal. In other cases, the controller can cause the wireless communication chipset to modulate a signal containing communication data using a radar modulation. This enables another device that receives the signal to perform wireless communication or radar sensing. By utilizing these techniques, the wireless communication chipset can be used for wireless communication or radar sensing.

In some implementations, a headphone device includes an earpiece housing, a speaker in the earpiece housing configured to produce audio, and a wireless charging coil having a first portion that extends outside the earpiece housing and a second portion that extends within the earpiece housing. A battery charging circuit is coupled to the wireless charging coil, and the battery charging circuit is configured to charge a battery of the headphone device based on electrical current induced in the wireless charging coil.

Techniques and apparatuses are described that enable digital beamforming for radar sensing using a wireless communication chipset. A controller initializes or causes the wireless communication chipset to use multiple receiver chains to receive a radar signal that is reflected by a target. A digital beamformer obtains baseband data from the wireless communication chipset and generates a spatial response, which may be used to determine an angular position of the target. The controller can further select which antennas are used for receiving the radar signal. In this way, the controller can further optimize the wireless communication chipset for digital beamforming. By utilizing these techniques, the wireless communication chipset can be used for wireless communication or radar sensing.

A gesture detection system uses two radar tones to concurrently detect absolute distance and relative movement of a target object. A radar-based detection device alternates transmitting a first radar tone and a second radar tone via a radar-emitting device, and then captures a first return signal and a second return signal that are generated by the first radar tone and second radar tone reflecting off the target object. The radar-based detection device demodulates the return signals into a first set of quadrature signals and a second set of quadrature signals and, in some cases, generates a first set of digital samples and second set of digital samples from the respective quadrature signals. Various aspects process the first set of digital samples and second set of digital samples to concurrently identify absolute distance and relative movement and, at times, determine an in-the-air gesture performed by the target object.

Methods, systems, and devices for enhanced digital headsets are disclosed. An enhanced USB-C headset includes a USB-C connector, a cable extending from the USB-C connector, an inline control box coupled to the USB-C connector through the cable, and a first earphone and a second earphone. The cable includes conductors for transmitting DC bus power, power return, and differential digital signals and extends at least one foot in length. The control box includes a single circuit board, with circuitry for managing digital communications, converting audio data, and providing output signals to drive analog speaker elements of the earphones.

A method includes receiving an optical signal from an external network at a first optical terminal affixed to an external side of a substantially transparent surface of a building. The first optical terminal includes a first fiber port configured to receive a first optical fiber and an output lens optically coupled to the first fiber port. The first fiber port is configured to route the optical signal from the external network to first optical terminal. The method also includes directing the optical signal through an optical link extending through the substantially transparent surface to a second optical terminal affixed to an interior side of the substantially transparent surface. The second optical terminal includes an input lens and a second fiber port optically coupled to the input lens. The input lens is configured to receive the optical signal from the first optical terminal through the optical link.

A method includes receiving packets of data from an external network and receiving location information over a wireless communication link from a wireless communication device located inside a building. The location information indicates a relative location of the wireless communication device. The method also includes executing beam forming with the wireless communication device based on the received location information to form a communication beam directed toward the wireless communication device. The method also includes transmitting the communication beam over the wireless communication link from the external network interface unit to the wireless communication device, the communication beam containing the data packets.
