The invention is directed to a process of combining an aqueous solution of a fluoride with an aqueous solution of a host multi-valent metal salt and an aqueous solution of a salt forming a reactant mixture resulting in a precipitate of aqueously insoluble rare-earth doped multi-valent metal fluoride nanoparticles.

Method for preparing rare-earth doped fluoride nanoparticles

Novel silane compositions have been prepared by reacting a 3-isocyanatopropyl trialkoxysilane with an alcohol or diol having a divalent alkylene or alkylene-ether group. The alcohol or diol has a formula weight less than about 5000. The compositions can be used to modify the surfaces of inorganic oxygen-containing materials, including but not limited to silica, silicates, borosilicates, aluminosilicates, days, and metal oxides. Surface treatment of silica nanoparticles with these compositions improves their improved dispersion in polyester nanocomposites.

Silane compositions for polyester nanocomposites

Polyester nanocomposite compositions contain silica nanoparticles that have been subjected to surface treatment with novel trialkoxysilane compositions. The novel silane compositions are prepared by reacting a 3-isocyanatopropyl trialkoxysilane with 1,3-propanediol or certain polyether diols. The silica nanoparticles exhibit improved dispersion in the polyester. This leads to haze reduction and improvements in mechanical properties.

Polyester nanocomposites

The invention is directed a composition represented by the chemical formula EuAFOwherein A is alkaline earth, 0.002&#x2266;x&#x2266;0.20, and 0&#x2266;y&#x2266;x; the composition exhibiting a luminescence spectrum characterized by peaks at 592&#xb1;2 nm and 627&#xb1;2 nm, wherein the ratio of the peak intensity at 592&#xb1;2 nm to that at 627&#xb1;2 nm is at least 5% larger than the corresponding peak intensity ratio at the same wavelengths of a first corresponding reference composition with the same value of x that has not been exposed to a temperature above 100&#xb0; C., and wherein said ratio of the peak intensity at 592&#xb1;2 nm to that at 627&#xb1;2 nm is at least 5% smaller than the corresponding peak intensity ratio at the same wavelengths of a second corresponding reference composition with the same value of x that has been subject to heating to 900&#xb0; C. for 6 hours.
