A method for developing a numerical control manufacturing program for a common geometric feature of a first component includes obtaining manufacturing process data for the common geometric feature. The manufacturing process data is associated with one or more numerical control manufacturing processes for the common geometric feature of one or more second components. Each of the one or more second components includes the common geometric feature. The method further includes determining one or more manufacturing constraints for the numerical control manufacturing program for the common geometric feature of the first component, selecting a numerical control manufacturing process of the one or more numerical control manufacturing processes, obtaining manufacturing process parameters for the selected one or more numerical control manufacturing processes, and developing the numerical control manufacturing program for the common geometric feature of the first component. The developed numerical control manufacturing program includes the manufacturing process parameters.

System and method for developing a numerical control manufacturing program

A method for inspecting components includes providing a plurality of different three-dimensional component CAD models with each three-dimensional component CAD model of the plurality of different three-dimensional component CAD models sharing at least one common geometric feature. The method further includes generating an inspection sequence for the at least one common geometric feature, collecting feature manufacturing data for the at least one common geometric feature during manufacturing of a plurality of different components corresponding to the respective plurality of different three-dimensional component CAD models, analyzing the feature manufacturing data associated with the at least one common geometric feature, modifying the inspection sequence for the at least one common geometric feature based on the analyzed feature manufacturing data, and inspecting components based on the modified inspection sequence.

Component inspection system and method

A method for qualifying a manufacturing process for a first component including a common geometric feature includes obtaining manufacturing data for the common geometric feature. The manufacturing data is associated with one or more qualified second components. The one or more qualified second components are different than the first component. Each of the one or more qualified second components include the common geometric feature. The method further includes modeling the manufacturing process for the common geometric feature of the one or more qualified second components using the manufacturing data, modeling the manufacturing process for the common geometric feature of the first component, obtaining manufacturing process parameters for the manufacturing process for the common geometric feature of the one or more qualified second components, and qualifying the manufacturing process for the common geometric feature of the first component.

Manufacturing process qualification system and method

A method of determining wear of a seal element includes rotating a seal plate relative to the seal element and such that the seal plate and the seal element form a rotational sealing interface. The seal element includes an insert embedded in the seal element. A portion of the seal element is worn with a sealing face of the seal plate. The insert is contacted with the sealing face of the seal plate. A portion of the insert is worn to create a wear particle of the insert. The presence of the wear particle in a lubrication oil is sensed with an oil monitoring system.

A fan blade for a gas turbine engine is disclosed. The disclosed fan blade includes an airfoil having a leading edge, a trailing ling edge, a convex side, a concave side and a distal tip. The leading edge, trailing edge, convex side and concave side of the airfoil is at least partially coated with an erosion resistant coating. The distal tip of the airfoil is coated with a bonded abrasive coating. The bonded abrasive coating engages the abradable coating disposed on the fan liner and, because of its low thermal conductivity, reduces heat transfer to the distal tip of the fan blade. The reduction in heat transfer to the distal tip of the fan blade preserves the integrity of erosion resistant coatings that may be applied to the body or the airfoil of the fan blade.

A method and apparatus for machining parts with variable stiffness includes determining, by a controller, a chatter-lobe plot of a cutter assembly. A preliminary tool path is developed by the controller. Virtual machining of a blank part using the preliminary tool path is performed by the controller. A chatter-lobe plot of the virtually machined part is determined by the controller. A dynamic chatter-lobe plot using the chatter-lobe plot of the cutting tool assembly and the chatter-lobe plot of the virtually machined part is determined by the controller. A chatter-free rotational speed of the cutting tool from the dynamic chatter-lobe plot is determined by the controller. A machining apparatus, controlled by the controller, uses the determined chatter-free rotational speed of the cutting tool to machine a blank part.

Method and apparatus for machining parts with variable stiffness

An integrally bladed rotor, including: a plurality of blades integrally formed with a hub as a single component, each of the plurality of blades having a blade body extending from the hub to an opposed blade tip surface along a longitudinal axis, wherein the blade body defines a pressure side and a suction side, and wherein the blade body includes a cutting edge defined between the blade tip surface of the blade body and the pressure side of the blade body, wherein the cutting edge is configured to abrade a seal section of an engine case. A method for manufacturing an integrally bladed rotor includes: forming a plurality of airfoils integrally with a hub to form a single component, each of the plurality of airfoils having an opposed tip surface with respect to the hub extending along a longitudinal axis, wherein each of the plurality of airfoils defines a pressure side and a suction side; and forming a cutting edge between the tip surface and the pressure side of each of the plurality of airfoils, wherein the cutting edge is configured to abrade a seal section of an engine case.

A method of forming an airfoil includes the steps of depositing material to form an airfoil in a first layer, and then depositing material in a second layer on the first layer. The first and second layers have distinct densities. An airfoil is also disclosed. The method provides powerful design advantages.

Hollow airfoil construction utilizing functionally graded materials

A robotic deburring process that automatically, accurately, and efficiently removes burrs from a workpiece. The robotic deburring process uses CAM location data to establish deburring trajectory, physics based machining models to predict burr type and size, and force control functions to compensate inaccuracies due of inaccuracies of robots arms.

The cutting portion includes a cutting edge. The coolant inlet and the coolant outlet are disposed in the shank. The channel system is contained in the rotary tool and is a closed circulation loop system such that the coolant is contained within the channel system as the coolant is circulated within the rotary tool. The channel system includes a delivery path and a return path. The delivery path is fluidly connected to the coolant inlet and includes a shape corresponding to a shape of the cutting edge. The return path is fluidly connected to the coolant outlet and to the delivery path at a location in the cutting portion of the rotary tool.
