A non-covalent complex of an albumin molecule and a hydrophobic ligand, compositions containing the same, and methods of use thereof are provided. The present complex may find use in delivering the hydrophobic ligand to microorganisms that have albumin-binding outer surfaces, such as a cell wall.

Albumin-based non-covalent complexes and methods of use thereof

The invention provides compositions comprising a single protein having one or more molecules of a pharmaceutical agent tightly bound therein. The compositions are useful to decrease the toxicity and/or to widen the therapeutic window of the pharmaceutical agent. The invention also provides methods for preparing such a composition.

Methods and systems for Resonant Raman spectroscopy are provided. Methods according to certain embodiments include irradiating a sample with a monochromatic light source at a first irradiation intensity and a second irradiation intensity, determining the intensity of one or more of the Resonant Raman scattering and fluorescence scattering at the first irradiation intensity and second irradiation intensity, calculating a rate of change of one or more of the intensity of Resonant Raman scattering and fluorescence in response to the change in irradiation intensity from the first irradiation intensity to the second irradiation intensity and comparing one or more of the rate of change in the intensity of Resonant Raman scattering and the rate of change in the intensity of fluorescence scattering with the rate of change in the irradiation intensity by the monochromatic light source to determine the Resonant Raman response of the sample. Methods also include determining the presence or absence of a microorganism in a sample and correcting for variations associated with measurement instrumentation (e.g., monochromatic light source) and variations associated with the sample (e.g., fluorescence from non-target compounds). Also provided are methods for determining the antimicrobial susceptibility of a microorganism to an antimicrobial agent as well as methods for characterizing a phenotype of an unknown microorganism in a sample. Systems for practicing the subject methods are also provided.

Spectroscopic methods to detect and characterize microorganisms

The present disclosure is directed to polymeric beads, methods of making the beads, and methods of using the beads as high-capacity anion exchange materials. In particular, the disclosure provides polymeric beads comprising a cross-linked polyamine and having a crush strength of about 250 g/bead or more. Preferably, the beads are substantially spherical. Also disclosed are polymeric beads comprising a cross-linked polyamine that has a substantial number of both strong base sites and weak base sites. Methods of using the polymeric beads in various industrial applications, such as groundwater remediation, radio waste management, municipal wastewater management, demineralization, toxin removal, mining, food refinery, research, agriculture, and the like, are also disclosed herein.

In a specific embodiment, it relates to the treatment of any eye disorder, although in particular embodiments the individual has a thickened Bruch's membrane. An activating energy source is utilized to effect a controlled diffusion enhancement and/or degradation of Bruch's membrane that enables improved diffusional transport between the choroid and retina. The individual is administered an inactivated diffusion-enhancing molecule that becomes associated with the membrane, which is then precisely exposed to an activating energy source, such as light or ultrasound.

The present invention relates generally to the field of magnetic resonance imaging and, more particularly, to devices and methods used in the observation of the diffusion of molecules across a permeable membrane using magnetic resonance techniques.
