A user equipment in a vehicle (v-UE) may transmit ranging signals, sometimes referred to as physical ranging signals (PRS), via inter-vehicle messages. The vehicle may be designated as a representative of a cluster of vehicles, e.g., in a vehicle platoon, and may broadcast and receive PRS on behalf of the cluster, while no other vehicles in the cluster broadcast PRS. PRS received from single representative vehicle in a separate cluster may be used to determine the inter-cluster distance between the two clusters. If the inter-cluster distance falls below a predetermined threshold, the v-UE may instruct all other vehicles in its cluster to begin broadcasting PRS, so that each vehicle can determine its distance to all other vehicles. Accordingly, the overhead due to broadcast PRS may be minimized until, e.g., accurate positioning between vehicles is warranted.

Cluster-based approach to positioning of vehicles in vehicle platooning or autonomous trucking

Disclosed are various techniques for wireless communication. In an aspect, a method of wireless communication includes determining, based on environment information about an environment in which a user equipment (UE) that is receiving positioning reference signals (PRSs) using a first bandwidth (BW) is operating, a second BW to be used by the UE for receiving PRSs, and transmitting PRSs using the second BW to be used by the UE for receiving PRSs.

Environment-aware positioning reference signal (PRS)

Aspects relate to group-based positioning reference signal (PRS) broadcast in a wireless communication network. Wireless communication devices communicating over a sidelink channel in the wireless communication network may be grouped into one or more positioning groups. Within each positioning group, a respective order of the wireless communication devices in the positioning group may be identified. The wireless communication devices in a positioning group may then communicate PRSs therebetween over the sidelink channel based on the order of wireless communication devices in the positioning group.

Group-based PRS broadcast for sidelink positioning

A responder user equipment (UE) in separate ranging sessions may determine whether there is a collision between the ranging signals assigned to broadcast in the separate ranging sessions. A collision in the ranging signals is detected when the ranging signals have the same frequencies and broadcast times, e.g., the broadcast time of one ranging signal is within a predetermined amount of time for the other ranging signal. When a collision in the ranging signals is detected, the responder UE sends a message to the initiator UE indicating the possibility of a collision. Available times for broadcasting the ranging signals may be determined, e.g., by the responder UE or the initiator UE. The initiator UE may initiate a new ranging session based on the available times for broadcasting the ranging signal or may proceed with the ranging session with the possibility that the responder UE will not participate.

Optimization of ranging sessions initiated by vehicle and pedestrian UES

Certain aspects of the present disclosure provide techniques for improving sidelink positioning via messaging between wireless nodes, e.g., roadside service units (RSUs). A method that may be performed by a user equipment (UE) includes receiving a first positioning reference signal (PRS) from a first wireless node, receiving a second PRS from a second wireless node, receiving, from the first wireless node, an estimate of a first clock error component between the first wireless node and the second wireless node, and estimating a position of the UE, based on the first PRS, the second PRS, and the estimate of the first clock error component.

Improving sidelink positioning via messaging between wireless nodes

Various aspects of the present disclosure generally relate to wireless communication. In some aspects, a first user equipment (UE) may receive a set of resource maps from one or more second UEs, each resource map of the set of resource maps including resource availability information for a respective time window. The first UE may select a set of resources based at least in part on at least one resource map of the set of resource maps. The first UE may transmit a signal using the selected set of resources. Numerous other aspects are provided.

Techniques for selecting resources from resource maps obtained from nearby devices

A vehicle-enabled user equipment (VUE) and related techniques are disclosed. In one aspect, the VUE issues a periodic broadcast, or signals a response to a requesting source, identifying its location management capability (LMC). The UE forms a link with a recipient VUE of the broadcast to perform joint localization of the pedestrian UE (PUE). Joint localization by VUE and another VUE may be performed by VUEs and PUEs in the region exchanging ranging signals and ego measurements. The VUE determines a location jointly of the PUE. The location can be determined upon a request, periodically, or in response to a triggered event.

Vehicle-to-pedestrian positioning with joint localization in vehicles

Systems, methods, and devices for sidelink positioning determination and communication can employ techniques including obtaining, at a first sidelink-enabled device, data from one or more data sources indicative of one or more criteria for using either round-trip time (RTT)-based positioning of a target node or single-sided (SS)-based positioning of the target node. The techniques also include selecting, with the first sidelink-enabled device, a positioning type from the group may comprise of RTT-based positioning and SS-based positioning, based on the data. The techniques also include sending a message from the first sidelink-enabled device to a second sidelink-enabled device, where the message includes information indicative of the selected positioning type.

Sidelink positioning: switching between round-trip-time and single-trip-time positioning

Disclosed are some examples of techniques for positioning of a user equipment (UE) using positioning reference signal (PRS). One or more units of messages may be communicated between an initiator UE and a responder UE. A unit of message may include a pre-PRS message, a PRS message and a post-PRS message. The pre-PRS message and the post-PRS message may be sent or received using a license spectrum. The PRS message may be sent or received using an unlicensed spectrum. The communication between the initiator UE and the responder UE may be initiated by the initiator UE identifying the responder UE from a plurality of UEs based on positioning properties of the responder UE. The positioning properties of the responder UE may include one or more of a direction, a velocity, a location confidence and a location of the responder UE.

Group-based positioning design in asynchronous vehicular networks

Multiple user equipments (UEs) may initiate independent ranging sessions at nearly the same time and location and which may interfere with each other. A UE that receives multiple initial messages for ranging determines if there is temporal separation between the ranging sessions. The UE may further determine if there is geographic separation between the ranging sessions, e.g., the initiating UEs are separated. If separation is lacking, the UE separates available ranging signal properties, such as frequency bandwidth, timing instances, and identifiers, and communicates different sets of ranging signal properties to each initiating UE. The multiple ranging sessions may be performed using the different sets of ranging signal properties with less risk of interference.

Positioning reference signal adaptation in distributed ranging system

In an aspect, an initiator transmits a positioning reference signal. The initiator receives a plurality of responder positioning reference signals sent from individual responders of a plurality of responders. The initiator transmits a measurement message comprising a first set of measurements that are determined based on the positioning reference signal and the plurality of responder positioning reference signals. The initiator receives responder measurement messages sent from the individual responders of the plurality of responders. The initiator receives updated map information from an anchor and updates pre-existing map information based on the updated map information.

Positioning system to leverage map data collected by user equipment

A positioning method includes: establishing a positioning session between a plurality of positioning devices including a first positioning device and a second positioning device; obtaining line-of-sight/non-line-of-sight status (LOS/NLOS status) for a plurality of positioning device pairs, each being a pair of the plurality of positioning devices; and transmitting a disable message to the first positioning device based on the LOS/NLOS status of at least one of the first positioning device or the second positioning device being non-line-of-sight relative to at least a subset of the plurality of positioning devices, the disable message indicating to disable at least one of transmission of one or more first positioning reference signals from the first positioning device or measurement of one or more second positioning reference signals from the second positioning device by the first positioning device.

Distributed device management for positioning

Various aspects of the present disclosure generally relate to wireless communication. In some aspects, a first user equipment (UE) may identify a plurality of UEs for a UE positioning session. The UE may identify a set of parameters for the UE positioning session. The UE may broadcast information indicating at least the set of parameters for the UE positioning session. The UE may receive, from at least one of the plurality of UEs, a set of positioning reference signals (PRSs) based at least in part on the set of parameters. The UE may broadcast, based at least in part on the set of PRSs, positioning information. Numerous other aspects are provided.

Techniques for ranging and positioning of distributed devices

A user equipment (UE) in a vehicle (V-UE) broadcasts multi-phased ranging signals with which other entities may determine the range to the V-UE. The multi-phased ranging signals may include a first message, which may be broadcast in the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) spectrum, includes ranging information, such as a source identifier, location information for the broadcasting V-UE, and an expected time of broadcast of the ranging signal. The ranging signal may then be broadcast at the expected time and may include the source identifier. A second message, which be broadcast in the ITS spectrum, may include clock error information for the V-UE. A receiving entity may determine the range to the V-UE based on the time of arrival of the ranging signal and the expected time of transmission, as well as the clock error information. The receiving entity may further generate a position estimate based on the received location information.

Sidelink positioning based on physical ranging signals

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A base station may transmit a request for a first user equipment (UE) to provide sensing capability information associated with UEs other than the first UE (e.g., an indication of one or more sensors associated with the corresponding UE, an orientation of the corresponding UE, a field of view associated with the corresponding UE). Additionally, the first UE may receive, from each of a set of second UEs, indications of the sensing capability information associated with the corresponding second UEs. Based on the sensing capability information indicated for each of the set of second UEs, the first UE select a subset of second UEs and transmit an indication of the sensing capability information associated with the subset of second UEs to the base station.
