Magnetostrictive actuator. The actuator includes a flexible substrate and a magnetostrictive film on the substrate. The shape of the flexible substrate is altered in the presence of a magnetic field.

A magnetohydraulic motor with a positive displacement pump that pumps hydraulic fluid to and from the two sides of a bi-directional piston that provides the motor's output force and motion. Motion control is provided by properly controlling valves that selectively open and close fluid passageways between the actuator member and each side of the piston.

Magnetohydraulic motor

A tuning mechanism for a superconducting radio frequency particle accelerator cavity, wherein the cavity comprises a number of axially aligned cells held by a frame, with at least one active cell that is axially stretchable to tune the resonant frequency of the cavity. The tuning mechanism comprises a lever arm having a center of rotation, one or more mechanical members coupling the lever arm to an active cell, and a motor adapted to move the lever arm, to thereby move the active cell through the mechanical members.

A magnetostrictive actuator, comprising: a magnetostrictive member which elongates upon application of a magnetic field; a translating member mechanically coupled to the magnetostrictive member, for translating the change in length of the magnetostrictive member into a desired action; and a selectively-energized coil surrounding the magnetostrictive member, to apply a magnetic field to the magnetostrictive member, and thus selectively change the length of the magnetostrictive member, and thereby cause the translating member to create the desired action.

Magnetostrictive actuator

A superconducting magnetic coil formed of anisotropic high temperature superconducting material includes ferromagnetic flanges positioned coaxial to the longitudinal axis of the coil and at the ends of the superconducting coil to capture magnetic flux emanating from the coil so that the maximum perpendicular magnetic field at the end regions is reduced. A reduction in the maximum perpendicular magnetic field increases the critical current at the end regions thereby increasing the critical current at these regions and maintaining an overall higher critical current of the coil.

Superconducting magnetic coil

An actuator in which a magnetostrictor is subjected to magnetic fields produced by a superconducting coil, and the magnetostrictor and coil are maintained at temperatures below the magnetic transition temperature of the magnetostrictor and the superconducting temperature of the coil, typically at temperatures in the range of about 4 to about 130 degrees Kelvin. The magnetostrictor is a laminated Terbium Dysprosium (TbDy) alloy structure and the coil includes high temperature superconducting oxide material. The laminations of the TbDy structure are mechanically loaded in compression and each has a thickness substantially equal less than or equal to the depth of field penetration, and a cooler maintains both the TbDy and superconductor at their optimum temperatures.

Magnetostrictive superconducting actuator

The superconducting rotor includes at least one field coil made of a superconductor material having a given superconducting transition temperature. A cryocooler system is mounted for rotation with the rotor. The cryocooler includes a cold head portion mounted in heat transfer relation with the field coil to cool the field coil to a temperature below its transition temperature and includes a piston/regenerator adapted to allow passage of a working fluid at a mass flow rate which is substantially uniform over the cross-section of the piston/regenerator during operation of the system. Heat is conducted away from the field coils by heat pipes or by conduction through high thermally conductive material. Mounting the cryocooler cold head for rotation with the rotor eliminates the use of a cryogenic liquid pool for rotor cooling.

Superconducting rotor

An autogenous superconducting joint metallurgically bonding a pair of shaped superconducting pieces. Each of the pieces is formed by combining the metallic elements of a superconducting oxide in substantially the stoichiometric proportions needed to form the superconducting oxide, and then forming the combined metallic elements into a shaped piece. The microstructure of the joint is substantially the same as that of the portions of the pieces adjacent the joint.

Connection between high temperature superconductors and superconductor

The invention relates to a process for making a superconducting connection between a pair of superconducting ceramic oxide pieces, each of the pieces having been formed by combining the metallic elements of the superconducting oxide in substantially the stoichiometric proportions needed to form the superconducting oxide into a precursor and forming the precursor into a shaped piece. The process comprises the steps of: contacting each of the shaped pieces with the other; connecting each of the shaped pieces to the other by means for forming a metallurgical bond between the shaped pieces; and oxidizing the connected shaped pieces under conditions sufficient to oxidize the metallic elements to the superconducting oxide. In other embodiments of the invention, the process is for forming a superconducting connection between a pair of pieces having a superconducting ceramic oxide/noble metal composition; or for forming a joint between a superconducting ceramic oxide and a normal conductor.

Process for making electrical connections to high temperature

Improved Stirling cycle machine including at least a pair of eccentric disks fixed to a pair of rotatable shafts in phase with each other and which eccentric disks upon rotation of the shafts (in opposite directions in the preferred embodiment) also rotate (in opposite directions in the preferred embodiment) and impart upward movement to a bellows defining a variable-volume compression or expansion chamber with a reduced tendency to also impart side thrust, rocking motion, or lateral movement to the bellows whereby bellows wear is reduced and the life of the bellows and the Stirling cycle machine is increased.
