A radio receiver for receiving a selected digital HDTV signal, irrespective of whether it is a complex-amplitude-modulation (QAM) or a vestigial sideband (VSB) signal, using the same tuner. The tuner supplies a final IF signal in a 6 MHz frequency band, the lowest frequency of which is not appreciably more than 2.38 MHz. The final IF signal is digitized for synchrodyning to baseband, with the 2.375 MHz difference between the carrier frequencies of QAM and VSB signals being taken into account in the digital synchrodyning circuitry. The carrier frequencies of the QAM and VSB final IF signals are regulated to be submultiples of symbol frequency by applying automatic frequency and phase control signals developed in the digital circuitry to a local oscillator of the tuner. The presence of the pilot carrier accompanying a selected VSB HDTV signal is detected for automatically switching the radio receiver for operation in a VSB signal reception mode. The absence of pilot carrier accompanying a selected QAM HDTV signal is detected for automatically switching the radio receiver for operation in a QAM signal reception mode.

Digital receiver with system for controlling the operating mode of an adaptive equalizer

A DTV signal has a plural-data-segment frame header including complementary first and second ghost-cancellation reference signals differentially delayed by the duration of two NTSC horizontal scan lines. A receiver for such DTV signal has an adaptive equalizer for baseband symbol code with kernel weights calculated by a computer operative on the equalizer response after comb filtering. The comb filter combines the equalizer response as differentially delayed by the duration of two NTSC horizontal scan lines to cancel artifacts of co-channel NTSC interference in the comb filtered equalizer response supplied to the computer. This reduces the undesirable influence of such artifacts on equalization to reduce intersymbol interference.

Product package, comprising a data storage device, packaging material, and an authentication system. The authentication system comprises first and second coatings coated on the storage device and the packaging material. One of the coatings comprises chromogenic microcapsules capable of reacting to produce color. The other coating comprises color developer. The coatings can be bonded to each other or a composite coating can be a self-contained color former such as on the storage device. The invention further comprises methods of affirming authenticity of a data storage device. The method comprises applying to the storage device a color-reactable coating which can react with a color-producing second composition, packaging the storage device to provide a closed and sealed packaged, opening the package, and concurrent with or after opening the package, reacting the chemical compositions to produce the color as an indication of authenticity of the data storage device.

Composite ghost cancellation reference (GCR) signals that make available both a chirp and a PN sequence during the same VBLI in each successive field facilitates the more rapid and efficient calculations of ghost cancellation and of equalization, on a continuing basis. A television receiver for use with such composite GCR signals includes means for separating the chirp and PN sequence portions of the GCR signals from the remainder of the composite video signal, a ghost cancellation filter and an equalization filter connected in cascade to respond to the composite video signal and provided each with adjustable filtering weights, means responding to the separated chirp portions of the GCR signals to calculate a discrete Fourier transform (DFT) therefrom, means responding to that DFT to determine the adjustable filtering weights of the ghost cancellation filter, and means responding to the separated PN sequences to determine the adjustable filtering weights of the equalization filter.

Ghost cancellation reference signal with bessel chirps and PN sequences, and TV receiver using such signal

Composite ghost cancellation reference (GCR) signals that make available both a chirp and a PN sequence during the same vertical-blanking-interval (VBI) scan line in each successive field facilitate more rapid and efficient calculations of ghost cancellation and of equalization, on a continuing basis. A television receiver for use with such composite GCR signals includes circuitry for separating the chirp and PN sequence portions of the GCR signals from the remainder of the composite video signal, a ghost cancellation filter and an equalization filter connected in cascade to respond to the composite video signal and provided each with adjustable filtering weights, and a computer. Random-access memory addressed during writing snatches the vertical-blanking-interval scan lines selected to include GCR signals. Sets of four successive ones of the selected scan lines are then additively and subtractively combined to separate the chirp portions of the GCR signals from a remainder of the composite video signal. The sets of selected scan lines are additively and subtractively combined in another way to separate the PN sequence portions of the GCR signals form a remainder of the composite video signal. The computer responds to the separated chirp portions of the GCR signals to calculate a discrete Fourier transform (DFT) therefrom. The computer proceeds from that DFT to determine the adjustable filtering weights of the ghost cancellation filter. The computer thereafter responds to the separated PN sequences to determine the adjustable filtering weights of the equalization filter.

A radio receiver for receiving a selected digital TV signal uses final intermediate frequency signals the carrier frequencies of which are multiples of symbol rate. The radio receiver has a match filter receptive of rectified samples of digitized intermediate-frequency signal and responsive to the amplitude of the intermediate-frequency carrier being modulated in accordance with the field synchronization code group to generate a pulsed response to the beginning of each data field. This pulsed response is used to determine when data segment synchronization information should occur, so its detection is more certain to be accurate and data segment synchronization is more rapidly determined. Symbol synchronization is rapidly inferred from the field synchronization and data segment synchronization, so that the samples in each data line can be counted. The complex carrier frequencies of the final intermediate frequency signals are generated in response to the samples per data line count, for implementing synchronous detection to baseband. The adjustment of the carrier frequency of the final intermediate frequency signal to be a prescribed multiple of symbol rate is done in response to an automatic-frequency-and-phase-control signal developed from the synchronous detection results.

Digital television receiver with match filter responsive to field synchronization code

DTV signals transmitted over the air with a symbol rate of around 10.76 million samples per second include echo-cancellation reference (ECR) signals each of which includes or essentially consists of a repetitive-PN1023 sequence with baud-rate symbols, which repetitive-PN1023 sequence incorporates a number of consecutive data-segment synchronization signals. Receivers for these DTV signals respond to these ECR signals to generate initial weighting coefficients for adaptive filters used for channel equalization and echo suppression. The initial weighting coefficients are calculated from a cepstrum extracted from the repetitive-PN1023 sequence ECR signal by DFT methods or with a PN1023 auto-correlation match filter.

Repetitive-PN1023-sequence echo-cancellation reference signal for single-carrier digital television broadcast systems

A radio receiver uses the same tuner for receiving a selected digital television (DTV) signal, irrespective of whether it is a quadrature-amplitude-modulation (QAM) or a vestigial sideband (VSB) signal. The final IF signal is digitized at a rate that is a multiple of both the symbol frequencies of the QAM and VSB signals, for synchrodyning to baseband. The carrier frequencies of the QAM and VSB final IF signals are regulated to be submultiples of the multiple of both the symbol frequencies of the QAM and VSB signals by applying automatic frequency and phase control (AFPC) signals developed in the digital circuitry to a local oscillator of the tuner. Baseband DTV signals obtained by synchrodyning the final IF signals have a sample rate higher than symbol rate to facilitate symbol synchronization. The baseband DTV signals are decimated to symbol rate before performing channel equalization to reduce the number of multipliers required in the channel equalization filter.

Decimation of baseband DTV signals prior to channel equalization in digital television signal receivers

Receiving apparatus for digital television signals digitizes a final intermediate frequency signal supplied from a triple-conversion radio receiver and synchrodynes the digitized final intermediate frequency signal to baseband. The triple-conversion radio receiver selects one of a plurality of digital television signals for upconversion to that portion of the electromagnetic frequency spectrum above the channels that are used for television broadcasting, amplifies a first intermediate-frequency signal in a first intermediate frequency band generated by that upconversion, amplifies a second intermediate-frequency signal in a second intermediate frequency band generated by downconverting the amplified first intermediate-frequency signal, and supplies a third intermediate-frequency signal in a third intermediate frequency band generated by downconverting the amplified second intermediate-frequency signal. This third intermediate-frequency signal is the final intermediate-frequency signal supplied to the analog-to-digital converter for being linearly converted to a digitized third intermediate-frequency signal. Digital synchrodyning circuitry synchrodynes the digitized third intermediate-frequency signal to baseband and thereby generates at least a real component of digital baseband signal. Circuitry responsive to at least the real component of the digital baseband signal recovers a stream of digital data descriptive of the video and audio portions of television programming.

Digital television receivers that digitize final I-F signals resulting from triple-conversion

Dual shell microcapsule aggregate particles and copy materials coated therewith, such aggregate particles having inner shells surrounding chromogenic nucleus material, and outer shells encompassing multiple such inner shells to form aggregate particles thereof. The inner shells are derived from polar pre-polymer compositions. The outer shells are derived from complex colloids such as gelatin and gelatin derivatives. The outer shell material causes agglomeration of the inner shells into aggregate particles, thus increasing the sizes of the particles without increasing the sizes of the respective inner-shell microcapsules which contain the chromogenic material.

Microcapsules having improved printing and efficiency

A digital communications radio receiver, as for television, digitizes a final intermediate-frequency signal offset from zero frequency no more than a few megahertz. This digitized final I-F signal is passed through an adaptive equalizer before being synchrodyned to baseband in the digital regime, which adaptive equalizer has its weighting coefficients determined by comparing I-F signal as received with possible multipath with ideal I-F signal free from multipath distortion. Decision feedback for adjusting the filtering coefficients of the equalizer is described, which is based on the ideal baseband signal being re-modulated onto final I-F carrier and compared to the received signal as translated in frequency to provide the final I-F signal. A training-signal method for adjusting the filtering coefficients of the equalizer is described, which characterizes the reception channel by comparing prescribed portions of the received signal as translated in frequency to provide the final I-F signal to final I-F signal segments stored at the receiver. Equalization of the final I-F signal based on error signals derived from modulated I-F signal, rather than from demodulated baseband signal, allows different equalization of the upper sideband and the lower sideband of the final I-F signal. This facilitates receiver passband tilts as well as multipath distortion being compensated for.

Passband equalizers with filter coefficients calculated from modulated carrier signals

Apparatus for reproducing data from a selected digital television signal, transmitted in packet form as quadrature-amplitude-modulation (QAM) of a carrier, has a tuner for selecting a digital television signal and converting it to a final intermediate-frequency signal, which is digitized by an analog-to-digital converter before synchrodyning to baseband in the digital regime. QAM synchrodyning circuitry responsive to the digitized final intermediate-frequency signal generates real and imaginary digital sample streams of QAM symbol code, by synchrodyning the final IF signal to baseband in the digital regime. Symbol decoding circuitry responsive to the real and imaginary digital sample streams of QAM symbol coding generates a digital data stream. Data synchronization recovery circuitry recovers data synchronizing information included in the digital data stream. A video decoder of decompression type, such as an MPEG-2 video decoder responsive to portions of the digital data stream, as selected in response to the data synchronizing information, generates digital signals descriptive of red, green and blue video signals.

Receiver for QAM digital television signals

Apparatus for reproducing data from a selected digital television signal, transmitted in packet form as vestigial-sideband (VSB) amplitude-modulation (AM) of a carrier, has a tuner for selecting a digital television signal and converting it to a final intermediate-frequency signal, which is digitized by an analog-to-digital converter before synchrodyning to baseband in the digital regime. VSB synchrodyning circuitry synchrodynes the digitized final intermediate-frequency signal to baseband in the digital regime to generate in-phase and quadrature-phase baseband signals. The quadrature-phase baseband signal is lowpass filtered to generate an automatic frequency and phase control (AFPC) signal for controlling a local oscillator in the tuner, so that the in-phase baseband signal comprises digitized VSB symbol coding. Symbol decoding circuitry responsive to the VSB symbol coding generates a digital data stream. Data synchronization recovery circuitry recovers data synchronizing information included in the digital data stream. A video decoder of decompression type, such as an MPEG-2 video decoder responsive to portions of the digital data stream, as selected in response to the data synchronizing information, generates digital signals descriptive of red, green and blue video signals.

Radio receiver for vestigal-sideband amplitude-modulation digital television signals

A plural-conversion digital television signal receiver that embodies the invention upconverts digital television signal from a selected television channel to a UHF initial I-F signal. After image-rejection filtering there is a single-step downconversion of the initial UHF first I-F signal to a low-band final I-F signal, the uppermost frequency of which is in the high-frequency band. The low-band final I-F signal is digitized and demodulated in the digital regime to generate a baseband signal.
