There is provided a system for integrating at least one residential Plain Old Telephone System (POTS) phone to a cellular phone network. A Subscriber Line Interface Circuit (SLIC) interfaces audio from the cellular phone network to the at least one residential POTS phone. A line switcher (), connected to the SLIC, connects the at least one residential POTS phone to any one of a POTS line or a cellular line. An audio gateway (), connected to the SLIC, wirelessly receives the audio from a cellular phone connected to the cellular phone network for subsequent transmission to the at least one residential phone and wirelessly transmits the audio from the POTS line to the cellular phone.

Integrated cellular/PCS-POTS communication system

An FM broadcast transmitter transmits a broadcast signal having a carrier at a broadcast frequency and sidebands, able to be transmitted at full power, within a transmission bandwidth around the carrier. It includes a source of a modulated FM stereo signal having a carrier at the broadcast frequency and having sidebands with a bandwidth less than the transmission bandwidth representing a stereo signal. It also includes a source of a modulated in-band-on-channel (IBOC) signal, having carrier pulses spaced relative to each other to represent the IBOC digital data signal encoded as a variable pulse width encoded signal, and a bandwidth within the transmission bandwidth not overlapping the FM stereo signal sidebands. A signal combiner combines the modulated FM stereo signal and the modulated IBOC signal to form the broadcast signal.

In-band-on-channel broadcast system for digital data

An asynchronous transfer mode digital document delivery system is provided. A customer premise unit is configured to permit a customer to order and receive a data stream. A buffer is coupled to the customer premise unit to store the data stream before transmitting the data stream to a customer. A server includes digital documents stored thereon for delivery to customers through a switched ATM network. A control mechanism is employed to control a data rate of the data stream between the server and the buffer to ensure maintenance of a steady data stream from the customer premise unit to a customer during a loss of a physical layer between the server and the customer premise unit.

Cordless communication techniques for cordless communication devices having a handset unit and a base unit are provided. Such techniques can utilize a modulation method for Frequency Division Duplex/Time Division Duplex (FDD/TDD) that overcomes deficiencies of prior art devices, for example, by eliminating the need for a burst mode controller for both Frequency Division Duplex and Time Division Duplex, as well as surface acoustic wave bandpass filters and dielectric low pass filters.

A time division duplex (TDD) single sideband (SSB) transceiver includes a transmitter adapted to input an analog audio signal, sample the analog audio signal, and to output an SSB frequency shift keyed (FSK) signal corresponding to the analog audio signal, the SSB FSK signal including analog information. A receiver is adapted to switch between receiving one of an upper sideband and a lower sideband of an external SSB signal.

Low cost/low power analog transceiver architecture

A voltage controlled Colpitts type crystal oscillator includes a first crystal and a transistor coupled to the first crystal to provide positive feedback for generating an output oscillatory signal. A variable capacitance is coupled to the first crystal for producing a change in a frequency of the oscillatory signal when a corresponding change in the variable capacitance occurs. A first inductance is coupled in a resonant circuit that includes the variable capacitance and the first crystal having a value selected to provide a pulling range of at least 0.4% with respect to the frequency of the oscillatory signal. In one embodiment of the invention, a second crystal is coupled to the first crystal and included in the resonant circuit. An energy dissipating impedance is coupled in the resonant circuit to the first crystal for decreasing a Q characteristic of the first crystal to increase the pulling range of the oscillator. The first inductance separates the second crystal from each of the first crystal and the energy dissipating impedance to decrease an effect of the energy dissipating impedance on a Q characteristic of the second crystal.

Narrow band chaotic frequency shift keying

An analog cordless telephone has a handset and a base. The handset and/or the base of the telephone may include the following components. A phase locked loop (PLL) and a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), adapted to be shared between a receive path and a transmit path. A first analog gate is adapted to gate a received audio signal on and off, in response to a clock signal. A second analog gate is adapted to gate a transmit audio signal on and off, in response to an inverted version of the clock signal. The transmit audio signal is enabled when the received audio signal is gated off, and the VCO is further adapted to be modulated by the enabled transmit audio signal to output a modulated RF signal.

Architecture for cordless telephones

Variable Aperture Coded (VAC) signals for VAC modulation are advantageously generated by a digital signal processor () that yields a VAC signal having a single narrow peak in the positive frequency region. A Discrete-Time Hilbert transformer () isolates only the positive spectral peaks, thus yielding a VAC signal that affords greater control over zero crossings.

DSP-based variable aperture code generation technique

A digital data modulator is coupled to a source of a digital data signal. An encoder encodes the digital data using a variable pulse width code. A pulse signal generator generates pulses representing edges of the encoded digital data signal. A carrier signal generator generates a carrier signal having carrier pulses corresponding to the pulses from the pulse signal generator. A corresponding digital data demodulator is coupled to a source of a modulated signal having carrier pulses spaced relative to each other to represent a variable pulse width encoded digital data signal. A detector generates a variable pulse width encoded signal in response to received carrier pulses. A decoder decodes the variable pulse width encoded signal to generate the digital data signal.

Modulation technique providing high data rate through band limited channels

A variable aperture coding/decoding system suitable for use in a spread spectrum system provides multiple phase coding of an input NRZ bitstream. Each bit of a coded output signal is coded to encompass a predetermined different number of clock periods depending on the logic level of the input signal. A coded bit exhibits a predetermined reference number of clock periods, eg., 9, when the input signal does not exhibit a logic level transition. When the input signal exhibits a phase change from a 0 to a 1 logic level, the bit width of an associated coded bit is increased by 1 clock period, to 10 clock periods. When the input signal exhibits a phase change from a 1 to a 0 logic level, the bit width of an associated coded bit is decreased by 1 clock period, to 8 clocks periods. Thus the coded output signal may contain three types of information represented by a bit width change proportional to predetermined factor N.

Digital signal modulation system

A digital data modulator is coupled to a source of a digital data signal having a data bit period, and a source of an auxiliary data signal. An encoder encodes the digital data using a variable pulse width code having edges occurring in an interval within the data bit period. A pulse signal generator, generates respective pulses representing the edges of the encoded digital data signal. A carrier signal generator generates a carrier signal having carrier pulses corresponding to the respective pulses during the interval, and modulated by the auxiliary data signal otherwise. A digital data demodulator is coupled to a source of a modulated signal including successive bit periods, each having a first interval containing a carrier pulse, spaced relative to other carrier pulses, to represent a variable pulse width encoded digital data signal, and a second interval during which the carrier is modulated with an auxiliary data signal. A detector demodulates the modulated signal to generate a variable pulse width encoded signal in response to received carrier pulses during the first interval, and an auxiliary data signal during the second interval. A decoder decodes the variable pulse width encoded signal to generate the digital data signal.

Modulation technique for transmitting a high data rate signal, and an auxiliary data signal, through a band limited channel

A digital data modulator includes a source of a plurality of digital data signals having a common data bit period. A plurality of encoders each encode a corresponding one of the plurality of digital data signals using a variable pulse width code having edges occurring in respective non-overlapping intervals within the data bit period. A plurality of pulse signal generators each generate respective pulses representing the edges of the corresponding one of the encoded plurality of digital data signals. A carrier signal generator generates a carrier signal having carrier pulses corresponding to the respective pulses. A digital data demodulator includes a source of a modulated signal including successive bit periods, each bit period having a plurality of non-overlapping intervals respectively associated with corresponding intervals in successive bit periods, each interval containing a carrier pulse, spaced relative to carrier pulses in other associated intervals, representing a corresponding variable pulse width encoded digital data signal. A detector demodulates the modulated signal to generate pulses corresponding to received carrier pulses. A plurality of decoders each decode pulses received in a respective one of the plurality of associated intervals in the bit period to generate the corresponding digital data signal.
