This disclosure relates to techniques for a wireless device to determine whether to display an indicator of millimeter wave cellular availability. A wireless device may establish a radio resource control connection that includes connectivity with a fifth generation new radio millimeter wave cell. The wireless device may determine to display an indication of millimeter wave cell availability. The wireless device may determine location status information and motion status information for the wireless device. The wireless device may determine when to cease displaying the indication of millimeter wave cell availability after the radio resource control connection is released or the millimeter wave cell is deconfigured based at least in part on the location status information for the wireless device and the motion status information for the wireless device.

Determining whether to display an indicator of millimeter wave cellular availability

This Application sets forth techniques for provisioning and activating an electronic subscriber identity module (eSIM) as a primary SIM for a mobile wireless device that includes a limited functionality physical SIM (pSIM) associated with a particular mobile network operator (MNO) and installed in the mobile wireless device at a time of manufacture. An eSIM associated with the particular MNO is reserved during a sales order process and later activated during device activation after receipt by a user using a secure over-the-air (OTA) cellular connection enabled by the limited functionality pSIM, when a non-cellular connection or other Internet accessible connection is available. Dual SIM device configuration processes can be suppressed during activation of the eSIM. After successful attachment of the mobile wireless device to a cellular wireless network of the particular MNO using credentials of the eSIM, the limited functionality pSIM is disabled.

This Application sets forth techniques for provisioning and activating electronic subscriber identity modules (eSIMs) for mobile wireless devices. An eSIM is reserved during a sales order process and later activated during device activation after receipt by a user. An option for eSIM installation in place of (or in addition to) physical SIM installation is provided when purchasing the mobile wireless device. The reserved eSIM can replace a previous SIM/eSIM or be a new eSIM. During device activation, installation and activation of the eSIM occurs. Activation of the eSIM can occur before or after deactivation of a transferred SIM/eSIM. The mobile wireless device accounts for propagation delay of eSIM activation through MNO servers by disabling and re-enabling the eSIM until initial attachment to an MNO cellular wireless network succeeds or a maximum number of retry attempts is reached.

Public key cryptography may be used to enhance the confidentiality of the user's permanent identity in transit. In some embodiments, a RSA-OAEP(SHA-256) encryption scheme may be used to protect the permanent identity when the EAP client needs to send the user's permanent identity to the server in the absence of pseudonym or fast re-authentication identity. In some embodiments, a server certificate is used to authenticate a iWLAN tunnel to protect an IMSI during setup of a Wi-Fi call. Some embodiments relate to methods for provisioning a secondary wireless device with an eSIM for wireless communication and activating multi-SIM functionality between the secondary wireless device and a primary wireless device having a subscribed SIM. The primary wireless device may act as a proxy in obtaining the eSIM for the secondary wireless device. The primary wireless device may then provide, to the cellular network, identifiers of the SIMs of the primary and secondary wireless devices. The primary wireless device may then request initiation of multi-SIM functionality for the two SIMs, and receive an indication that the multi-SIM functionality has been initiated. As an example, the multi-SIM functionality may be implemented by mapping the SIM of the primary wireless device and the SIM of the secondary wireless device (e.g., the provisioned eSIM) to the same Mobile Directory Number (MDN).

Methods, procedures and framework to provision an eSIM and make it multi-SIM capable using primary account information

A server of a wireless operator creates a roaming list based on a user's roaming plan and sends the roaming list to the user's wireless device. The roaming list includes a list of public land mobile networks (PLMNs). When the user travels away from their home wireless network to another geographic area, the wireless device scans based on the roaming list for radio signals. The roaming list contributes to user satisfaction because timely attachment to a radio network while away from home occurs efficiently since the wireless operator creates the roaming list based on both i) roaming agreements that the wireless operator is a party to with other wireless operators, ii) the user's roaming plan, iii) the radio access technology (RAT) capabilities of the wireless device and iv) the RAT capabilities of other wireless operators in particular geographic regions.

Method and apparatus for creating and using a roaming list based on a user roaming plan

This disclosure relates to techniques for performing Wi-Fi authentication using an entitlement server in a wireless communication system. A wireless station may perform authentication with a carrier network entitlement server, using a protocol other than Wi-Fi. The wireless station may receive a Wi-Fi service token as part of the authentication with the carrier network entitlement server. The wireless station may perform Wi-Fi authentication with a Wi-Fi access point associated with the carrier network using the Wi-Fi service token. After performing Wi-Fi authentication using the Wi-Fi service token, the wireless station may communicate with the carrier network by way of the Wi-Fi access point.

Entitlement based Wi-Fi authentication

Techniques to manage updates for eSIMs of a secondary wireless device are disclosed. Responsive to a user input, expiration of a timer, receipt of a message from an associated primary wireless device, processing circuitry of the secondary wireless device commands an eUICC to update an eSIM. A secure data connection is established between the eUICC and a network provisioning server, either directly from the secondary wireless device to a cellular wireless network or relayed indirectly via the primary wireless device. The eUICC and the network provisioning server exchange messages in accordance with a BIP process to update the eSIM. The eUICC provides a status to the processing circuitry indicating success or failure for the eSIM update. Upon success, a portion of the secondary wireless device may be placed in a reduced power state. Upon failure, the eSIM update process may repeat up to a maximum number of retries.
